Round 6 Feature Match: Ryan Yu Versus Blake Morrison

September 9th, 2023

We’re over halfway through the Swiss Rounds here at YCS Vancouver, and there are only a few Rounds left in Day 1. Among the handful of Duelists with undefeated records, 2 Canadians will be facing off. Ryan Yu, 2017 Dragon Duel World Champion is fresh from his 2nd Place finish at the Master Duel World Championship, and now he’s up against VIP Duelist Blake Morrison!

Both Duelists want to preserve their undefeated position and lock their spot in the Top Cut, and a win here would put them once step closer to that goal.

Ryan Yu, looking to keep his undefeated record!

Morrison won the roll and opted to start the match. He Special Summoned Kashtira Unicorn and used its effect to add Kashtiratheosis from his Deck to his hand. He activated it to Special Summon Kashtira Fenrir from the Deck. Morrison then used Fenrir’s effect to get Kashtira Riseheart to his hand. He Special Summoned Riseheart and activated its effect to banish Kashtira Big Bang, as well as the Top 3 cards of Yu’s Deck.

Morrison used all 3 monsters on his field to Xyz summon Kashtira Arise-Heart. Next, he activated Pot of Prosperity to look at the top 6 cards of his Deck. Prosperity revealed Dimension Shifter, Scareclaw Kashtira, Triple Tactics Talents, Forbidden Lance, Kashtiratheosis, and Infinite Impermanence. He took the Lance, hoping to protect the Arise-Heart as much as he could. Morrison attached Infinitrack Goliath from his banished pile to Arise-Heart, further bolstering its defenses. After that, he Sets 3 to his back row before passing.

Yu had Black Metal Dragon, Quick Launch, Bystial Saronir, Rokket Caliber, Rokket Recharger, and Bystial Druiswurm in his opening hand. Yu, seeing that he was in dire straits, went directly into the end of the Battle Phase. It was a valiant effort but Morrison didn’t take the bait; Yu passed his turn.

Morrison led with another Prosperity, revealing 6 cards and taking Kashtira Birth. Arise-Heart attached the banished Big Bang. Morrison activated Arise-Heart’s effect, detaching Big Bang to banish one of his own Set cards. That let Morrison trigger Big Bang and Special Summon Fenrir from underneath Arise-Heart. Fenrir’s effect activated to get Unicorn and Yu decided to concede so he could get to the second Duel.

A quick win for Morrison!

Yu opened Duel 2 with Bystial Magnamut, Bystial Saronir, Quick Launch, Chaos Space, and Starliege Seyfert. He Normal Summoned Seyfert and used its effect, sending it to the Graveyard to search White Dragon Wyverburster. He played Quick Launch next, to Special Summon Rokket Tracer from his Deck. Yu Linked away Tracer to Link Summon Striker Dragon and used its effect to get Boot Sector Launch. He activated Chaos Space next, discarding Saronir to fetch The Bystial Lubellion. Yu triggered the effect of Saronir to send another Lubellion to the Graveyard.

He Special Summoned White Dragon Wyverburster by banishing Saronir. Yu then used White Dragon and Striker to Link Summon Dragunity Knight – Romulus. The effects of Romulus and White triggered, adding Dragon Ravine and Black Dragon Collapserpent to Yu’s hand. He Special Summoned Magnamut by banishing Striker Dragon, triggering its effect to get a Dragon during the End Phase. Yu Special Summoned Lubellion from the Graveyard using the Magnamut, and used its effect to place Branded Regained on the field.

Next up, Yu Special Summon Black Dragon Collapserpent by banishing White Dragon Wyverburster, triggering Regained, putting the White Dragon back, and drawing Saronir. Yu then used the Chaos Space in his Graveyard to put Striker back into the Extra Deck and draw Bystial Magnamhut. He Linked off the Black Dragon for Guardragon Pisty and added the White Dragon back to his hand. He activated Ravine, discarding Magnamhut to send Chaos Dragon Levianeer to the Graveyard.

Yu continued on, using the effect of Seyfert to banish itself and get back Levianeer. He banished 3 DARK monsters for the Summon, so he got to put a card from Morrison’s hand back into his Deck with Levianeer’s effect. He followed up, using Levianeer and Romulus to Link Summon Triple Burst Dragon, getting the Link Arrows necessary to activate Pisty and Special Summon Tracer. Next, he discarded Lubellion to get Saronir.  Yu summoned it and immediately used it with Tracer to Synchro Summon Bystial Dis Pater!

Dis Pater’s effect let Yu Special Summon his banished Seyfert. He Linked Dis Pater, Triple Burst, and Lubellion to Link Summon Borrelend Dragon! He Linked Seyfert and Pisty as well, to Link Summon Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres. Borrelend let him bring back Tracer, which activated activated to destroy Ravine and Special Summon Rokket Recharger from Yu’s Deck. He Tuned them together to Synchro Summon Borreload Savage Dragon, equipping Triple Burst Dragon for its effect. Finally, Yu added Bystial Druiswurm to his hand with Magnamut’s effect at the beginning of the turn before passing to Morrison.

Morrison led with Pot of Prosperity for 6, carefully considering his options before electing to take Herald of the Abyss. He used it, declaring DARK Dragon, and Yu chose to send Borreload Savage Dragon to the Graveyard. Morrison Summoned Kashtira Unicorn and used its effect to get Kashtiratheosis. He activated it by targeting Unicorn, to which Yu chained Seal’s effect to bump Unicorn back to Morrison’s hand. Yu triggered Seal’s effect to Special Summon Bystial Magnamhut, then triggered that.

Terraforming let Morrison search out Pressured Planet Wraitsoth, getting him Kashtira Fenrir. He used Triple Tactics Talents next for the effect to take one of Yu’s monsters. You chained Borrelend’s effect to bring back Tracer. Morrison activated Kashtira Birth and Normal Summoned Fenrir. Branded Regained triggered to Special Summon Dis Pater from the Graveyard.

Morrison entered the Battle Phase and declared an attack with Borrelend into the Dis Pater. Yu Special Summoned Druiswurm from his hand by banishing Savage Dragon. Morrison used Fenrir’s effect, making it Chain Link 1 targeting Tracer, and activated Unicorn’s effect as Chain Link 2. Yu uses Regained on the Savage Dragon as Chain Link 3 and Tracer’s effect targeted Druiswurm as Chain Link 4.

The Chain resolved: Tracer Summoned Rokket Caliber from the Deck, Regained drew You Black Metal Dragon, Unicorn banishes a card from Yu’s Extra Deck and Fenrir banished Yu’s Tracer face-down. Morrison could now trigger Birth’s effect to banish Druiswurm, Seal, and Recharger from Yu’s Graveyard, but Druiswurm would trigger as well, sending Unicorn to the Graveyard. Borrelend cleared the Dis Pater and Morrison sent Fenrir to attack over Rokket Caliber. Fenrir searched Morrison Kashtira Riseheart in Main Phase 2, and he Special Summoned Unicorn with Kashtira Birth.

Morrison overlaid Unicorn and Fenrir to Xyz summon Kashtira Shangri-Ira. He Special Summoned Riseheart and used its effect to banish a copy of Birth. Shangra-Ira triggered to lock a zone and Morrison tried to use Wraitsoth to destroy Yu’s Borrelend, but he’d forgotten it can’t be destroyed! He Xyz Summoned Kashtira Arise-Heart over Risehear, and Yu added Absorouter Dragon to his hand in the End Phase.

Yu drew Book of Moon and used Borrelend’s effect immediately, to negate Arise-Heart and Special Summon Rokket Recharger. Shangra-Ira Special Summoned Fenrir in the Standby Phase, triggering Wraitsoth to destroy BrandedRegained. He Special Summoned White Dragon Wyverburster so he could Link it away away with Bystial Magnamhut and Recharger to Link Summon Knightmare Unicorn!

Yu discarded Absorouter for Unicorn’s effect and sent Fenrir back to the Deck. Yu Normal Summoned Black Metal Dragon next, and used it along with Knightmare Unicorn to Link Summon Accesscode Talker. That was enough to push the Match into a third and final Duel!

A slight slip-up proves costly!

Morrison opened Duel 3 with Kashtira Unicorn to get Kashtira Birth, then searched Kashtira Fenrir with Pressured Planet Wraitsoth. Morrison activated Birth and Normal Summoned Fenrir, using it to search Kashtira Riseheart. He Special Summoned Riseheart and used its effect to banish Kashtiratheosis. Morrison then used all 3 monsters to Xyz Summon Kashtira Arise-Heart, following up with Pot of Prosperity for 6 cards. He took Solemn Judgement, attached Kashtiratheosis, and Set 2 cards to his back row to finish out.

Yu opened with a hand of Nibiru, the Primal BeingAsh Blossom & Joyous Spring, Xyz Encore, Bystial Druiswurm, Dragon Ravine, and Rokket Tracer. He played Ravine, then played Xyz Encore to clear Arise-Heart. Morrison got back his Fenrir with his banished Kashtiratheosis. You discarded Ash Blossom for Ravine’s effect to send Bystial Saronir to the Graveyard, sending The Bystial Lubellion in turn. He Special Summoned Druiswurm, banishing Saronir, then used Druiswurm to Summon Lubellion… only for Morrison to flip Solemn Judgment! Morrison dropped to 4000 Life Points.

Yu pressed on, Normal Summoning Rokket Tracer and using its effect to destroy Ravine. He Special Summoned Rokket Recharger. Yu used Tracer to Link Summon Striker Dragon, which got him Boot Sector Launch from his Deck. Yu used the effect of Striker to get back Tracer, triggering Recharger’s effect to Special Summon Druiswurm. He used the Boot Sector to Special Summon Tracer, and used that with Druiswurm to Synchro Summons Bystial Dis Pater.

Dis Pater’s effect let Yu Special Summon Saronir from the banished zone and that was enough damage for Yu to take the Duel, and the Match!

Ryan Yu captures the third Duel!

A costly Solemn Judgment and some strong tactical choices let Ryan Yu move on, undefeated with a 6-0 record!
