Round 8 Feature Match: Ryan Yu Versus Batuhan Senkesen

September 9th, 2023

It’s Round 8 at YCS Vancouver, and we have another exciting Feature Match with two players that are currently still undefeated. Ryan Yu’s playing Dragon Link, but the big surprise is Batuhan Senkesen with Blackwings! Can he remain undefeated going into Day 2? Or will Ryan’s Dragons clip Senkesen’s wings? Let’s find out!

Batuhan Senkesen

Yu won the die roll and chose to go first. He Normal Summoned Starliege Seyfert and activated its effect, discarding White Dragon Wyverburster to search for Black Dragon Collapserpent. He then used Seyfert to Link Summon Striker Dragon, and activated its effect to search for Boot Sector Launch. Yu banished his Wyverburster from the Graveyard to Special Summon Collapserpent, used Collapserpent and Striker Dragon to Summon Dragunity Knight – Romulus, and activated Romulus’s effect to search for Dragon Ravine. Ryan activated Dragon Ravine and discarded Boot Sector Launch to try and send a Dragon-type monster from his Deck to the Graveyard, but Senkesen had Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate its effect. Unable to continue, Yu Set two cards to his backrow and passed turn.

Senkesen had Blackwing – Sudri the Phantom Glimmer, Book of Moon, Pot of Prosperity, and Blackwing – Shamal the Sandstorm. He activated Prosperity, revealing two copies of Blackwing – Simoon the Poison Wind, Bystial Druiswurm, Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind, Black Feather Whirlwind, and Droll & Lock Bird. He chose to add Simoon to his hand and used its effect, banishing Shamal from his hand to place a Black Whirlwind in his Spell/Trap Card Zone, and then proceeding to Normal Summon Simoon, but was met with a Book of Moon from Yu, preventing Black Whirlwind from searching for a Blackwing card.

Senkesen Normal Summoned Sudri, attempting to activate the effects of Sudri and Black Whirlwind. But Yu had another Book of Moon, which was used to flip Sudri face-down, stopping yet another Black Whirlwind search. Senkesen resolved Sudri’s effect and searched for Blackwing – Vata the Emblem of Wandering, but with both of his monsters face-down, Senkesen was not able to Special Summon it out. With no more plays left, Senkesen Set a card to his back row and proceeded to the End Phase; Black Whirlwind was sent to the Graveyard.

The pressure was on Yu to make something happen this turn as Senkesen could easily flip his monsters face-up next turn. Yu drew into Chaos Space and activated it, discarding Nibiru the Primal Being from hand and searching for Chaos Dragon Levianeer. Yu banished Striker Dragon, Nibiru, and Collapserpent from his Graveyard to Special Summon Levianeer, and activated its effect, which would allow him to destroy two cards on the field. Senkesen responded with Book of Moon flipping Levianeer face-down, so Yu decided to destroy Senkesen’s set Simoon and the Levianeer itself. Yu used Chaos Space in the Graveyard to put Striker Dragon back to the Extra Deck and draw a card. He then banished Seyfert from his Graveyard to add Levianeer back to his hand.

From there, Yu activated the effect of his Dragon Ravine, discarding Triple Tactics Talent to send an Absorouter Dragon from his Deck to the Graveyard, using its effect to add a Rokket Tracer from his Deck to hand. Yu Normal Summoned Tracer and used its effect to destroy Dragon Ravine and Special Summon a Rokket Recharger from his Deck. He used Tracer to Link Summon Guardragon Pisty, and Recharger to Link Summon Striker Dragon, and with the two Link 1 Dragons pointing to the same Monster Zone, he used Pisty’s effect to Special Summon Seyfert back to the field. He then used Striker Dragon’s effect, targeting Pisty to get the Recharger back to hand. That allowed him to use Recharger’s effect to Special Summon Rokket Tracer from the Graveyard. Yu activated Seyfert’s effect to discard Levianeer and search for The Bystial Lubellion, and used Tracer and Seyfert to make Borreload Savage Dragon, equipping it with Guardragon Pisty

Yu sent Lubellion from his hand to the Graveyard to search for Bystial Magnamhut and activated Magnamhut’s effect, targeting Senkesen’s Simoon in the Graveyard. Yu activated Magnamhut’s effect, and then sent it to the Graveyard to Special Summon Lubellion. He used Lubellion’s effect to place Branded Regained to his Spell/Trap Card Zone. Yu used Romulus and Striker to make Triple Burst Dragon, then used Triple Burst and Lubellion to summon Accesscode Talker, targeting the Triple Burst Dragon. With Accesscode and Borreload Savage on the field, Senkesen conceded the first Duel.

Yu was just one win away from finishing Day 1 undefeated!

Senkesen chose to go first in the second Duel, and looked at an opening hand consisting of Pot of Prosperity, Blackwing – Vata the Emblem of Wandering, Black Feather Whirlwind, and two copies of Droll & Lock Bird. He activated Prosperity, revealing Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Small World, and Droll & Lock Bird. He chose to add Small World to hand, and then activated Small World, banishing Droll & Lock Bird from hand and Assault Synchron from his deck, in order to add Blackwing – Sudri the Phantom Glimmer to his hand. He Normal Summoned Sudri, and activated its effect to search for Blackwing – Shamal the Sandstorm. He then discarded Shamal from his hand to place Black Feather Whirlwind face-up in his Spell/Trap Card Zone.

Senkesen Special Summoned Vata from his hand, then activated its effect, sending it to the Graveyard, as well as Blackwing – Zephyros the Elite and Blackwing – Harmattan the Dust from his Deck to Synchro Summon Black-Winged Dragon. He then activated Black Feather Whirlwind as Chain Link 1, targeting Vata, and Shamal as Chain Link 2, targeting Hamattan. Yu chose to activate Bystial Magnamhut as Chain Link 3, targeting the Vata! Yu activated Magnamhut’s effect to search for a Dragon-type monster during the End Phase. Senkesen used Zephyros’s effect in the Graveyard to return Black Feather Whirlwind to hand, and then activated Whirlwind again with Zephyros now on the field. He used Sudri and Zephyros to Link Summon Raidraptor – Wise Strix, and then used Wise Strix to Special Summon another Shamal from Senkesen’s Deck.

Yu dropped Nibiru the Primal Being! Its effect tributed all monsters on the field, and placed a token on Senkesen’s side of the table instead. With no other plays Senkesen proceeded to the End Phase, where Yu resolved Magnamhut’s effect to search for The Bystial Lubellion.

Yu drew for turn and discarded Lubellion to search for Bystial Druiswurm. On the resolution, Senkesen used Droll & Lock Bird from his hand, keeping Yu from adding cards from his Deck to his hand for the rest of the turn. However, Yu Normal Summoned Rokket Tracer and used it with Magnamhut to Synchro Summon Bystial Dis Pater. He activated Dis Pater’s effect and targeted Shamal. Senkesen, seeing the monsters flood onto Yu’s board and with no ways to stop him, chose to concede the second Duel.

Ryan Yu takes a 2-0 victory to move on undefeated!

With that, Day 1 is over, and Ryan moves onto Day 2 with a perfect 8-0 record!
