Round 1 Feature Match: Bobby Kenny vs. Derek Mitchell French

November 4th, 2023

Welcome to Round 1 of YCS Richmond! We’ve got Orlando Duelist Bobby Kenny, planning a very unique build: Phantom Knight Ogdoadics! This Deck is using multiple engines bridging Sinful Spoils into Evols, Ogdoadics into Phantom Knights, and varied Extra Deck with Link, Xyz, and Synchro Monsters. He’s facing Derek French, from nearby Bland, VA. French is using Sinful Spoils Rescue-ACE, the Deck that’s proven itself at multiple YCS events already. French’s Deck is dominant for a reason, but Kenny’s got a major surprise factor on his side!

Derek French

Kenny won the dice roll and chose to play first. He had a hand of WANTED: Seeker of Sinful Spoils, Forbidden Droplet, Reptilianne Coatl, Diabellstar the Black Witch, and Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay. He started with WANTED in the Draw Phase, adding a second Diabellstar to his hand. He pitched one Diabellstar to Special Summon the other, and its effect Set Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye. He flipped Snake-Eye, sending Diabellstar to the Graveyard to Special Summon Evoltile Megachirella. He then used WANTED’s effect to return Snake-Eye to the Deck and draw The Phantom Knights of Shade Brigandine.

He used Megachirella’s effect to Tribute it and discard Phantazmay to Special Summon Evolsaur Lios. Lios’s effect Set Evo-Singularity on the field. He then used Lios’s other ability to send Miscellaneousaurus to the Graveyard. He used Miscellaneousaurus’s effect to Special Summon Animadorned Archosaur, destroying Lios and adding Nauya, the Ogdoadic Remnant to his hand. He used Nauya’s effect to send Keurse, the Ogdoadic Light to the Graveyard. He Tributed Archosaur to Special Summon Keurse from the Graveyard, which should have allowed French to also get back a monster, but he didn’t have any in the Graveyard yet. Keurse then Special Summoned Nauya and that got him Ogdoadic Daybreak to his hand. He played it to tribute Keurse and Special Summon four Ogdoadic Tokens.

Kenny Linked two of the tokens with Nauya to Link Summon The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche, which sent The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak to the Graveyard and Set Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade. He used Ancient Cloak’s effect in the Graveyard to search for The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots. He Set Shade Brigandine and activated it immediately to Special Summon it. Then he used the effect of Daybreak in his Graveyard, sending Nunu, the Ogdoadic Remnant. He Special Summoned Nunu and stacked it with Shade Brigandine for King of the Feral Imps. King’s effect got him Zohah, the Ogdoadic Boundless to his hand. He Normal Summoned Zohah, then Special Summoned Reptilianne Coatl. He tuned Coatl to Zohah and an Ogdoadic Token for Baronne de Fleur, then Special Summoned Silent Boots, and used it with his last token for I:P Masquerena.

In French’s Draw Phase, Kenny flipped Evo-Singularity to Special Summon Evolzar Lars, attaching Lios and Megachirella to it. French started his turn with Pot of Prosperity, banishing 3 cards, and Kenny negated it with Lars. French Normal Summoned Infernoble Knight Ricciardetto, then played “Infernoble Arms – Durendal”. In response, Kenny Linked I:P Masquerena with King of the Feral Imps to play S:P Little Knight! Durendal was equipped to the Ricciardetto, but before French could activate Durendal’s effect, S:P Little Knight banished Ricciardetto! French didn’t have enough to play through Kenny’s multiple negations and conceded the first Duel!

Bobby Kenny’s negations get him there!

French went first in the second Duel, and started by Special Summoning Kashtira Fenrir. Then he Normal Summoned Rescue-ACE Air Lifter, adding EMERGENCY! to his hand. He played it to Special Summon Rescue-ACE Hydrant, Tributing Air Lifter. Hydrant got him Rescue-ACE Preventer. He banished Air Lifter and EMERGENCY! from his Graveyard to Special Summon Rescue-ACE Turbulence, which set him up with CONTAIN!, EXTINGUISH!, ALERT!, and RESCUE! to the field.

Turbulence and Hydrant were Linked off to Summon Ferocious Flame Swordsman. Kenny tried to Special Summon Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay in response, but French negated it with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. French banished Hydrant to Special Summon Preventer, then paired it with Fenrir to Link Summon S:P Little Knight. Preventer Special Summoned Air Lifter. Since French had converted his Machine-types into the Warrior-type Ferocious Flame Swordsman, he could now use the Swordsman and Air Lifter to Link Summon Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights!

Isolde searched Rescue-ACE Impulse to French’s hand, and he used Isolde’s next effect to send Durendal to the Graveyard to Special Summon Infernoble Knight Ricciardetto. Finally he used Isolde, Ricciardetto, and Fenrir to Link Summon Black Luster Soldier – Soldier of Chaos.

Kenny’s opening hand was Snake Rain, Enemy Controller, Phantom Knights’ Fog Blade, Ogdoadic Water Lily, and Phantazmay. He drew Diabellstar the Black Witch. In the Draw Phase, French flipped RESCUE! to Special Summon Turbulence in Defense Position. Kenny started with Snake Rain, discarding Fog Blade. “Let’s see the second Ash,” Kenny said, but French didn’t have it! Kenny loaded up his Graveyard with Zohah, Nunu, Vanguard of the Underground Emperor, and Night Sword Serpent, then Special Summoned Night Sword Serpent with its effect. Then he sent Phantazmay to Special Summon Diabellstar, triggering both Diabellstar’s own effect and the effect of Vanguard in his Graveyard. French Chained CONTAIN! on Diabellstar, and ALERT! to return Preventer from his Graveyard to his hand. Diabellstar’s effect was negated and Vanguard hit the field.

The turn continued: Kenny used Zohah’s effect from the Graveyard, pitching Water Lily to get Zohah to his hand. French Chained S:P Little Knight’s effect, targeting Little Knight and Vanguard. Kenny used the last card in his hand, Enemy Controller, Tributing Vanguard to steal Turbulence. S:P Little Knight’s ability then failed to resolve since both monsters couldn’t be banished. Kenny Normal Summoned Zoha, then Special Summoned Nunu from his Graveyard with Nunu’s effect. He overlayed his Ogdoadics to play King of the Feral Imps, detaching Nunu, and French Chained Rescue-ACE Impulse. Impulse Special Summoned Rescue-ACE Fire Engine, and King added Nauya to Kenny’s hand.

Diabellstar couldn’t attack because of CONTAIN!, so Kenny tried to attack Little Knight with King of the Feral Imps. French shut him down with EXTINGUISH! and that triggered the stolen Turbulence’s effect to destroy S:P Little Knight. Kenny used Turbulence and Diabellstar to play Dharc the Dark Charmer, Gloomy, and Fire Engine’s effect triggered to Special Summon Air Lifter. It got French a copy of Rescue-ACE HQ. Dharc stole S:P Little Knight, and Kenny used both monsters to Link Summon The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche. That landed Ancient Cloak in the Graveyard, and Kenny placed Shade Brigandine on the field.

Kenny banished Fog Blade from his Graveyard to Special Summon Ancient Cloak, then flipped Shade Brigandine. He stacked Brigandine and Night Serpent to Xyz Summon Time Thief Redoer, and since Redoer’s a DARK Xyz Monster, it triggered Rusty Bardiche’s effect to destroy Black Luster Soldier – Soldier of Chaos. Kenny discarded Nauya to send Keurse from the Deck to the Graveyard. He Tributed Rusty Bardiche to Special Summon Keurse, allowing French to Special Summon Turbulence with its effects negated. Keurse Special Summoned Nauya, which added Ogdoadic Daybreak to his hand. He used Ancient Cloak and Nauya to Link Summon Reptilianne Echidna, reducing Turbulence to 0 ATK. He then used Daybreak to Tribute Keurse for four Ogdoadic Tokens. He used two tokens to Link Summon I:P Masquerena, then used I:P Masquerena and Echidna for S:P Little Knight, which banished Fire Engine. He passed the turn.

In the Standby Phase, Redoer swiped Nibiru, the Primal Being from French’s Deck. French played Rescue-ACE HQ, and Kenny responded with Redoer’s effect, detaching Night Sword Serpent and Shade Brigandine. He banished Redoer for the turn and put HQ on top of French’s Deck; Night Sword was Special Summoned once again. French played Triple Tactics Talent to steal a monster, and Kenny responded with S:P Little Knight to banish itself and Air Lifter. French stole Night Sword with Talent, and he Normal Summoned a new Air Lifter to add EMERGENCY! to his hand.

French played the EMERGENCY! to Special Summon a new Turbulence, Tributing the old negated one. He banished the Turbulence in his Graveyard to Special Summon Preventer, then used the effect of EMERGENCY! from his Graveyard to Set EXTINGUISH!. He used Night Sword and Air Lifter to play his own I:P Masquerena. Then he used Turbulence to Set his last copy of EMERGENCY! from the Deck. He used Turbulence to play Super Starslayer TY-PHON – Sky Crisis! I:P Masquerena and Preventer destroyed Kenny’s last Ogdoadic Tokens, and TY-PHON attacked directly. Air Lifter, S:P Little Knight, and Redoer returned to the field in the End Phase.

Kenny drew Archosaur, and Redoer stole a copy of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring for an Xyz Material. Kenny used Daybreak from the Graveyard to put Vanguard in the Graveyard. Then he used Zohah’s effect, sending away Archosaur to get Zohah back. Vanguard triggered to revive itself and when it hit the field, French used Preventer to flip it face-down. Kenny Normal Summoned Zohah. He used Nunu’s effect to Special Summon itself, and French flipped EXTINGUISH! to destroy it.

Kenny tried moving to the Battle Phase, and French used I:P Masquerena’s effect. Kenny Chained S:P Little Knight to banish itself and I:P Masquerena first, then attacked the Defense Position Air Lifter with Redoer. In Main Phase 2, Kenny used Redoer to play Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS – Sky Thunder. He wanted to use its effect, but forgot about TY-PHON! He thought a moment, then used his ZEUS to play his own TY-PHON and bounce away French’s copy! I:P Masquerena and S:P Little Knight returned to play in the End Phase.

French played WANTED: Seeker of Sinful Spoils in his Draw Phase to get Diabellstar the Black Witch. He sent Preventer to destroy S:P Little Knight in battle. Then he Special Summoned Diabellstar, using I:P Masquerena for the cost. He started to search his Deck, and Kenny decided he’d rather concede now in the face of what was coming. There were just three minutes remaining on the clock, and he wanted to make sure he had a chance to get a lead in the third Duel before the round ended.

Bobby Kenny scoops to Diabellstar and Preventer

Kenny opened the last Duel with Daybreak, Nunu, Vanguard, Triple Tactics Talent, and Triple Tactics Thrust. He used Nunu’s effect, discarding it to send Zohah to the Graveyard. Then he sent Vanguard to the Graveyard to get Zohah to his hand. He Normal Summoned Zohah, then Special Summoned Nunu.

He was locked into Reptiles while Nunu was on the field, so he Xyz Summoned King of the Feral Imps, using its effect to search his Deck just as the clock ran out – the Match would end after this phase, with the highest Life Points determining it all. He added Nauya to his hand, and French used Droll & Lock Bird to shut down further searches. Kenny played Triple Tactics Talent to look at French’s hand and shuffle a Rescue-ACE Impulse back into the Deck.

French had no other interaction, so Kenny was free to go off and deal some burn damage! Kenny used Nauya, sending it to the Graveyard to send Keurse. He Tributed King of the Feral Imps to Special Summon Keurse, and French got to Special Summon Droll & Lock Bird. Keurse Special Summoned Nunu. Then he played Daybreak, Tributing Keurse to Special Summon four Ogdoadic Tokens. He used one token with Nunu for Echidna, then used that with a token for Rusty Bardiche. It Set Shade Brigandine and sent Ancient Cloak to the Graveyard. He flipped Shade Brigandine, then used Daybreak’s effect from the Graveyard to send Night Sword Serpent to the Graveyard. He Special Summoned Night Sword Serpent. Now that he’d confirmed French had no further answers in his hand, he was safe to Xyz Summon Gagaga Cowboy to end the Match.

Gagaga Cowboy closes out the third Duel!

Bobby Kenny takes the Match with Phantom Knight Ogdoadics!
