Round 2 Feature Match: Oscar Alexis Vargas Martinez vs. Paulo Roberto Goncalves da Silva

February 17th, 2024

Sixteen Duelists are competing in the Undisputed UDS Championship Tournament, and thirteen of them, including Paulo Roberto Goncalves da Silva from Brazil, are using FIRE-based strategies. Oscar Vargas from Mexico, however, is using a Kashtira strategy that has been drastically altered since Kashtira Arise-Heart joined the Forbidden List. Vargas is using lots of tech cards like Dimension Shifter in his Deck, and he’s hoping those cards will be enough to help him defeat FIRE Decks in the tournament this weekend. Both of these Duelists are currently 1-0 in the tournament, and they’re looking for a second win in this Swiss Round to bring them closer to a Top Cut finish. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

Goncalves drew a card for his turn and Vargas activated Dimension Shifter’s effect in the Standby Phase. In the Main Phase, Goncalves activated Bonfire and used its effect to add Snake-Eye Ash from his Deck to his hand. He passed his turn with no further play.

Paulo Goncalves

Vargas drew a Pressured Planet Wraitsoth, adding it to his hand of Ghost Mourner & Moonlit Chill, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Infinite Impermanence, and a second Pressured Planet Wraitsoth. He activated one copy of Wraitsoth but lost out to Goncalves’s Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring.

Goncalves Normal Summoned Snake-Eye Ash and activated its effect, prompting Vargas to negate it by flipping his face-down Infinite Impermanence. Next, Goncalves activated Bonfire, but lost out on its effect to Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. He Special Summoned Diabellstar from his hand by sending a Nibiru, the Primal Being to the Graveyard next, and Vargas activated the effect of Ghost Mourner & Moonlit Chill, targeting the Diabellstar and negating its effect. Goncalves attacked directly with Ash and Diabellstar, dropping Vargas down to 4700 Life Points. Next, he sent his Diabellstar and Ash to the Graveyard to Link Summon Hiita the Fire Charmer, Ablaze and used Hiita’s effect to Special Summon Ash Blossom from Vargas’s Graveyard. He sent Hiita and Ash Blossom to the Graveyard to Link Summon Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames next. He used its effect to Special Summon Ash and used Ash’s effect to send it to the Graveyard along with Promethean Princess and Special Summon Snake-Eye Oak. He used Oak’s effect to Special Summon Snake-Eye Ash from his Graveyard and then sent Ash to the Graveyard to Link Summon Linkuriboh. Next, he used Oak’s effect to send Oak and Linkuriboh to the Graveyard and Special Summon Snake-Eye Poplar from his Deck. He used Poplar’s effect to add Divine Temple of Snake-Eye to his hand and activated it. He used its effect to put a Snake-Eyes Flamberge Dragon from his Deck into his Spell & Trap Card Zone and then ended his turn.

Vargas drew a Kashtira Riseheart and then activated another Wraitsoth; but Goncalves negated its effect with another Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, leaving Vargas with only the Riseheart in his hand! He Normal Summoned the Riseheart and Goncalves used his Divine Temple’s effect to Special Summon his Flamberge Dragon. Vargas activated Riseheart’s effect by banishing a Kashtira Unicorn from his Deck and banished the top 3 cards of Goncalves’s Deck. Vargas attacked and destroy Poplar in the Battle Phase, and then Poplar’s effect allowed Goncalves to put Oak in his Spell & Trap Card Zone. Vargas Xyz Summoned Super Starslayer TY-PHON – Sky Crisis, and Goncalves used the Promethean Princess’s effect in the Graveyard to destroy Flamberge Dragon and TY-PHON and Special Summon the Princess back to the field. Vargas immediately conceded.

Paulo Goncalves takes a quick win in Duel 1!

Duel Two

Vargas opened up Duel 2 with Dimension Shifter, Tearlaments Kashtira, Kashtira Riseheart, and 2 copies of Dimensional Fissure.

He activated the effect of Dimension Shifter in the Main Phase and then passed his turn.

Goncalves, stunned to be starting his turn with no cards on Vargas’s field, drew a card for his turn and then activated Bonfire. He added Snake-Eye Ash to his hand and then passed his turn with no further play.

Vargas draw Kashtira Unicorn! He activated Dimensional Fissure and Goncalves started laughing. “Why me?!”, he asked in laughter. Goncalves activated the effect of PSY-Framegear Delta from his hand to negate the activation of the Dimensional Fissure and destroy it by Special Summoning Delta to the field alongside a PSY-Frame Driver. Vargas activated a second Dimensional Fissure and both Duelists laughed again. Vargas Special Summoned Kashtira Unicorn and Goncalves activated the effect of Ghost Mourner & Moonlit Chill to negate its effect. Next, Goncalves Special Summoned Riseheart from his hand and activated its effect by banishing a Kashtira Fenrir from his Deck. Goncalves banished the top 3 cards of his Deck face-down. Goncalves drew a card and then Vargas activated his Shangri-Ira’s effect in the Standby Phase. Goncalves used the effect of the Ash Blossom in his hand to negate it. Next, he Normal Summoned Snake-Eye Poplar and used its effect to add Divine Temple of the Snake-Eye to his hand. He activated the Divine Temple and used its effect to place Snake-Eye Ash from his Deck into his Spell & Trap Card Zone. He Link Summoned Linkuriboh next and then activated Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye. He sent his Temple to the Graveyard to Special Summon Oak and used Oak’s effect to Special Summon Poplar. He used Poplar and Linkuriboh to Link Summon S:P Little Knight and used Little Knight’s effect to banish Dimensional Fissure! Next, he used Oak’s effect to send 2 face-up cards to the Graveyard and Special Summon Flamberge Dragon from his hand! He used Flamberge Dragon’s effect to put Shangri-Ira into the Spell & Trap Card Zone and then sent little Knight and Flamberge Dragon to the Graveyard to Link Summon Promethean Princess. He used Flamberge Dragon’s effect to Special Summon Oak and Ash and then used his Princess’s effect to Special Summon Flamberge Dragon back to his field. He sent Ash and Princess to the Graveyard next in order to Link Summon Hiita, and used Hiita’s effect to try to Special Summon Riseheart from Vargas’s Graveyard; but Vargas Chained the effect of Tearlaments Kashtira to banish Riseheart from his Graveyard and Special Summon the Tearlaments Kashtira. Goncalves activated the effect of his Princess in the Graveyard, and Goncalves Chained the effect of his Tearlaments Kashtira to send the top 3 cards of Goncalves’s Deck to his Graveyard. Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames destroyed a monster on each player’s field and Special Summoned itself from the Graveyard, and then Goncalves Link Summoned Amphibious Swarmship Amblowhale.

Vargas drew Infinite Impermanence, Set it to his back row, and passed his turn. In the End Phase, Goncalves used his Flamberge Dragon’s effect to Special Summon the Shangri-Ira in Vargas’s Spell & Trap Card Zone to Goncalves’s own field.

Goncalves Normal Summoned Snake-Eye Ash and then used his Flamberge Dragon’s effect to put S:P Little Knight from his Graveyard into his Spell & Trap Card Zone. Next, he used Shangri-Ira and Ash as Link Materials to Summon Salamangreat Sunlight Wolf. He attacked directly with Sunlight Wolf, Flamberge Dragon, and Amblowhale, dropping Vargas down to 200 Life Points. Goncalves ended his turn.

Vargas drew Kashtira Riseheart and Goncalves used the effect of his Flamberge Dragon in the Draw Phase to try to Special Summon Little Knight; but Vargas Chained Infinite Impermanence to negate its effect. Vargas thought for a second, but then conceded, realizing he couldn’t make a comeback with only the Riseheart in his hand.
