Dragon Duel Championship: James Rowell vs. Anthony Dunne

April 21st, 2024

It all comes down to this! James Rowell won yesterday’s Dragon Duel event, and he’s back for another victory. Rowell is an Australian Duelist, currently living in New York, and he’s brought Branded Voiceless Voice today. He’s facing today’s Dragon Duel winner, Anthony Dunne from New Jersey, playing Swordsoul.

The winner of this Match will take home a set of Super Rare Darklord Prize Cards, a trophy, and the title of YCS Raleigh Dragon Duel Champion!

Duel 1

The Duelists jokingly fought over who had to roll the first die, with Rowell eventually winning and playing first. He started with Branded Fusion, sending Fallen of Albaz and Trias Hierarchia to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon Albion the Branded Dragon. Albion’s effect fused itself with Albaz into Mirrorjade the Iceblade Dragon! He then discarded Saffira, Dragon Queen of the Voiceless Voice to send Prayers of the Voiceless Voice to the Graveyard and add Skull Guardian, Protector of the Voiceless Voice to his hand. He banished Saffira to Ritual Summon, Tributing another Saffira and Jowgen to play Skull Guardian. Dunne used Infinite Impermanence on Skull Guardian, and Rowell had Sauravis, the Ancient and Ascended to negate Impermanence. Skull Guardian added Lo, the Prayers of the Voiceless Voice to his hand, and he Normal Summoned it to put Barrier of the Voiceless Voice on the field. Barrier added Sauravis, Dragon Sage of the Voiceless Voice to his hand, and he Special Summoned it by returning some spells to the Deck.

Anthony Dunne

Dunne had Tenyi Spirit – Vishuda, Crossout Designator, Pot of Desires, and Incredible Ecclesia, the Virtuous. He drew Effect Veiler. He Special Summoned Ecclesia and Tributed it for its effect, and Rowell used Dragon Sage Sauravis to Special Summon Ancient Sauravis. Ecclesia Special Summoned Swordsoul of Mo Ye, and Dunne activated its effect. Rowell Chained Mirrorjade’s effect to send Albion the Sanctifire Dragon to the Graveyard and banish Mo Ye, then Dunne Special Summoned a Swordsoul Token with Mo Ye’s effect. Dunne Special Summoned Vishuda, then used it to Link Summon Monk of the Tenyi. Then, he banished Vishuda from his Graveyard to return Barrier to Rowell’s hand. Dunne played Pot of Desires next, and Skull Guardian negated it.

And then Dunne realized he’d made an illegal move. With Swordsoul cards that Special Summon a Swordsoul Token, the Token’s controller cannot Special Summon from the Extra Deck except for Synchro Monsters, for as long as the Token remains in play. Thus, Monk of the Tenyi was off limits. Dunne pointed out his error and, feeling it was too far along to rewind the game state, decided it was best to concede this Duel.

An unfortunate end to the first Duel, but now Dunne got to choose who plays first, and could use his Side Deck accordingly.

Duel 2

Dunne chose to play… second! Rowell was stunned, but Dunne had specifically Side Decked with this plan, knowing Rowell would probably assume the opposite while Side Decking. Rowell began by Normal Summoning Diviner of the Herald, using its effect to send Trias Hierarchia to the Graveyard. He Tributed Diviner to Special Summon Trias Hierarchia, and Diviner then Special Summoned Lo, the Prayers of the Voiceless Voice. Lo’s effect put Barrier of the Voiceless Voice on the field, which added Saffira, Dragon Queen of the Voiceless Voice to his hand. He used Saffira to send Prayers of the Voiceless Voice to the Graveyard and add Odd-Eyes Pendulumgraph Dragon to his hand. He banished Saffira from his Graveyard to Ritual Summon Skull Guardian, Protector of the Voiceless Voice, Tributing Lo. Lo returned to the field, and Skull Guardian put a second Lo in his hand. He used Lo and Skull Guardian to Link Summon Dyna Mondo, then Special Summoned Dragon Sage Sauravis by returning some spells to his Deck.

James Rowell

Dunne had a hand of Dark Ruler No More, Swordsoul Emergence, Triple Tactics Talent, Vishuda, and PSY-Frame Driver. His choice to play second was bold, but that PSY-Frame Driver was very unfortunate to draw. In his Draw Phase he drew Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring – much less helpful at this point. In the Draw Phase, Rowell used Dyna Mondo to Special Summon Skull Guardian, then Special Summoned Lo. Lo placed Radiance of the Voiceless Voice on the field. Dunne started with Dark Ruler No More to shut down Rowell’s monster effects. He then played Swordsoul Emergence to add Mo Ye to his hand, and Normal Summoned it. He activated its effect to Special Summon a Swordsoul Token, and Rowell Chained with Radiance to destroy both Radiance and Mo Ye. This left Dunne with a Swordsoul Token and no way to Synchro Summon – he offered the concession!
