We’re in the Finals of Friday’s Speed Duel ATTACK OF THE GIANT CARD!! tournament, the first chance for Speed Duelists to claim a GIANT Speed Duel card at the WCQ! Hailing from Alabama, we have Jordan Andrew Farris, playing Gearfried the Iron Knight backed by Joey’s Iron Grit Skill Card. His opponent, from Rialto, CA, is Juan Francisco Navarro Valencia! Valencia has a Vampire Deck paired with Marik’s Twisted Personality Skill Card!
Duel 1
Farris won the dice roll and chose to play second. Valencia had a hand of Wall of Disruption, Haunted Shrine, Sphere Kuriboh, and Vampire’s Desire. He Normal Summoned Sphere Kuriboh, then used Vampire’s Desire to send Vampire Retainer to the graveyard. He Set his Trap Cards.
Farris Normal Summoned Gearfried the Iron Knight, and Set a full three back row cards. Gearfried destroyed Sphere Kuriboh in battle, and the damage let Valencia put a counter on Twisted Personality. Valencia flipped Haunted Shrine in the End Phase to Special Summon Retainer in Defense Position, and he paid 500 Life Points for its effect to add Vampire Awakening to his hand. His Skill Card got another counter.
Valencia drew Vampire Familiar. He Set Awakening.
Farris Normal Summoned D.D. Survivor, then flipped Macro Cosmos. Survivor attacked Retainer, and Valencia activated Wall of Disruption. Survivor dropped to just 200 ATK, which was still enough to destroy the 0 DEF Retainer. Gearfried was unaffected thanks to Farris’s Iron Grit Skill Card, and it attacked directly to drop Valencia to a mere 200 Life Points.
Valencia drew another Retainer. With Macro Cosmos in play and just 200 Life Points remaining, he conceded the first Duel!
Duel 2
Valencia chose to play second this time. Farris used Reinforcement of the Army to find Gearfried the Iron Knight, and Normal Summoned it. He Set two back row cards.
Valencia had Awakening, Book of Moon, and two copies of Twister. He drew Haunted Shrine. He Set Shrine, Twister, and Awakening.
Farris played another Reinforcement of the Army for another Gearfried. He Normal Summoned it and attacked directly. Valencia flipped Awakening to Special Summon Familiar. He used Familiar’s effect, paying 500 Life Points to add Retainer to his hand. Gearfried continued the attack, destroying Familiar. The second Gearfried attacked, and Valencia flipped Haunted Shrine to defend his Life Points. Farris chose not to attack the Familiar this time, leaving it out of the graveyard.
Valencia drew another Haunted Shrine and Set it.
Farris Normal Summoned his third Gearfried! One of them destroyed Familiar. Valencia flipped Haunted Shrine to revive Familiar once more, choosing not to pay any Life Points for its effect. Farris passed without destroying Familiar.
Valencia drew Vampire Hunter. He Set it, along with Twister.
Farris attacked with two copies of Gearfried, destroying Familiar and Hunter. The third Gearfried attacked, and Valencia used Haunted Shrine’s effect from the graveyard to Special Summon Familiar, and Gearfried destroyed it.
Valencia drew Vampire’s Desire. He Special Summoned Familiar from the graveyard, discarding Retainer. Familiar’s effect added Vampire’s Curse to his hand, and used Familiar to Tribute Summon it. He Special Summoned Retainer from his graveyard, discarding Desire. He paid 500 Life Points to add Awakening to his hand. Now with three counters on Twisted Personality, he destroyed a Gearfried with his Skill Card. He moved to the Battle Phase, and Farris tried flipping Blast with Chain. Valencia responded with Twister to destroy the Blast before it could be equipped. Vampire’s Curse attacked Gearfried, and Farris used Shrink in the Damage Step to win the battle! Valencia dropped to 1200 Life Points. He did not use Vampire’s Curse’s effect.
Farris Set one back row card. He sent a Gearfried to destroy Retainer. He attacked with the second Gearfried, and Valencia once again used the graveyard effect of Haunted Shrine to revive Vampire’s Curse, defending his Life Points.
Valencia drew another Haunted Shrine. He Set it, and sent Vampire’s Curse to attack. Farris had another Shrink!
Farris Set a back row card. Gearfried attacked, and Valencia flipped his third Haunted Shrine. Farris flipped Offerings to the Doomed to destroy it, and Valencia saved his monster with Book of Moon. Gearfried continued its attack and destroyed Vampire’s Curse. The second Gearfried attacked directly, ending the Match!
