Tech Update: The Infinite Forbidden

July 19th, 2024

Last weekend, players had the opportunity to attend The Infinite Forbidden Premiere! Event at their local OTS, and search for some new cards to bolster their decks for the NAWCQ. The set was officially released on July 17th, and there are a ton of cool new cards that players are adding to their decks, hoping it will give them an advantage over the competition.

Moon of the Closed Heaven

Moon of the Closed Heaven is a brand new Link-2 monster from The Infinite Forbidden! It requires two Effect Monsters as material, and with two Link Arrows pointing towards your opponent’s side of the field, it lets you use a monster that it points to as Link Material for the Link Summon of a Link-5 monster. This can be a useful way to get rid of a problematic monster without having to destroy it by battle or card effect.

However, this card is also important because it is the only LIGHT Fiend Link-2 monster! This card being accessible means that you can use it as Link Material to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem, which, alongside cards like Fiendsmith Engraver and Fiendsmith’s Tract, are sure to be seeing a ton of play as players look to more easily access powerful Rank 6 Xyz Monsters such as Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal and D/D/D Wave High King Caesar

Mulcharmy Purulia

Over the last several years, the ability to disrupt your opponent with cards from your hand has been a key strategy when playing at the highest level, with cards like Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Nibiru the Primal Being, and Infinite Impermanence all seeing consistent play. In The Infinite Forbidden, a new competitor has joined in the form of Mulcharmy Purulia! You have to control no cards in order to activate this card’s effect, but when you do, each time your opponent Normal Summons or Special Summons a monster from hand, you get to draw a card. However, it does require you to randomly shuffle some cards back into the Deck if you have too many more cards in your hand than your opponent has on the field.

You don’t need to shuffle cards back into the Deck until the End Phase, so during your opponent’s Main Phase, you have the ability to use other disruptions that you drew to further hinder your opponent. It forces your opponent to really think about how many resources they want to commit to the field; even though they’re developing their own board, they might just be allowing you to draw into the resources necessary to break through it. Against decks like Floowandereeze and Kashtira, Purulia can be absolutely devastating!

Dominus Purge

Sometimes, three copies of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring just isn’t enough; there are tons of cards that add a card from the Deck to the hand, and historically, Ash Blossom is what players use to try and prevent that from happening. Ash Blossom’s effect can only be used once per turn, but now, we have a new alternative in the form of Dominus Purge! If your opponent controls a card, this is a Trap Card that can be activated directly from the hand. Purge is a bit more limited than Ash Blossom, only able to negate a card or effect that adds a card(s) from the Deck to the hand specifically; furthermore, if you do activate this card from your hand, you cannot activate the effects of DARK, WATER, and FIRE monsters for the rest of the Duel.

Dominus Purge becomes an extremely interesting option for certain strategies. Decks like Snake-Eye and Tenpai Dragons, which consist mostly of FIRE monsters, probably won’t be using this card, but other decks like Floowandereeze and White Forest might be able to use Purge without being restricted. Even though Purge doesn’t stop as many cards as Ash Blossom, choosing to run Purge could help players to dodge cards like Called by the Grave, Triple Tactics Talent, and Triple Tactics Thrust
