Round 10 Feature Match: Thomas Robert Jefferson Brower vs. Andrew Joseph Mau

We’re almost there! It’s Round 10 here at YCS Sacramento, the last Swiss Round before Top 32. The pressure is on for this feature match, as Thomas Robert Jefferson Brower and Andrew Joseph Mau each have a 7-2 record. The winner of this Duel will have a strong chance at making it into the Top 32, so each of these Duelists will have to bring their best in order to advance. Which Duelist will move on and which Duelist’s journey will end here? Let’s find out!

Thomas Robert Jefferson Brower

Duel 1

Mau won the die roll and chose to go second! 

Brower’s opening hand consisted of Sangen Summoning, Effect Veiler, Forbidden Droplet, and two copies of Sangen Kaimen. During the Standby Phase, Mau activated Dimension Shifter. Brower started by activating Sangen Kaimen, but Mau responded with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Brower then activated Sangen Summoning, and activated its effect to add Tenpai Dragon Chundra from his Deck to his hand, and discarded Effect Veiler. He Normal Summoned Chundra, Set a card to his backrow, and ended his turn. 

Andrew Joseph Mau

Mau started his turn by Normal Summoning Tenpai Dragon Fadra. He then Special Summoned Chundra from his hand, then used Chundra and Fadra to Synchro Summon Black Rose Dragon, activating its effect to destroy all cards on the field. Brower responded with Sangen Kaimen, activating it to add Tenpai Dragon Genroku from his Deck to his hand before Black Rose Dragon destroyed all cards on the field. After Black Rose Dragon’s effect resolved, Brower activated the effect of Genroku to Special Summon it. Mau Set a card to his backrow. During the End Phase, Brower activated the effect of Genroku, Tributing it to Special Summon Tenpai Dragon Paidra from his Deck, and activated Paidra’s effect to add another Sangen Kaimen from his Deck to his hand. 

Brower drew another Sangen Summoning for his turn! He activated Summoning, then activated its effect to add Chundra to his hand and discard Forbidden Droplet. He Special Summoned Chundra, then used Chundra and Paidra to Synchro Summon Sangenpai Bident Dragion. He activated Bident’s effect to Special Summon Paidra, then used Bident and Paidra to Synchro Summon Sangenpai Transcendent Dragion! Brower attacked directly with Transcendent, and then activated Sangen Kaimen to Special Summon Tenpai Dragon Fadra. He activated Fadra’s effect, Special Summoning Chundra from the Graveyard, and attacked Mau directly with both monsters. Knowing that Brower would be able to continue swarming the field with Dragons, Mau conceded the first Duel.

Duel 2

Mau chose to go second again!

Brower’s opening hand consisted of Terraforming, Sangen Kaimen, Tenpai Dragon Paidra, and two copies of Tenpai Dragon Chundra. He started by activating Terraforming, adding Sangen Summoning from his Deck to his hand. He then activated Sangen Summoning, then Normal Summoned Paidra, activating its effect to get Sangen Kaiho from his Deck. He Special Summoned Chundra, then used Chundra and Paidra to Synchro Summon Sangenpai Bident Dragion, then activated Bident’s effect to Special Summon Paidra from the Graveyard. Next, Brower used Paidra and Bident to Synchro Summon Sangenpai Transcendent Dragion! He Set two cards to his backrow to end. 

Mau started his turn by activating Pot of Prosperity, adding D.D. Crow to his hand. He then Normal Summoned Tenpai Dragon Paidra, activating its effect to add Sangen Summoning from his Deck to his hand. He activated Summoning, then activated its effect, adding Tenpai Dragon Chundra to his hand and discarding a second Pot of Prosperity. He Special Summoned Chundra, and in response to the summon, Brower activated Sangen Kaiho.

Entering the Battle Phase, Mau attacked Transcendent with both Paidra and Chundra, and at the end of the Battle Phase, Brower activated Sangen Kaimen and Special Summoned Tenpai Dragon Fadra from the Deck. He activated Fadra’s effect to Special Summon Chundra from the Graveyard and activated its effect, using Chundra and Fadra to Synchro Summon Kuibelt the Blade Dragon, destroying Mau’s Chundra.

In Main Phase 2, Mau activated the effect of D.D. Crow. to banish Fadra from Brower’s Graveyard, then activated the effect of Bystial Druiswurm, banishing the Crow in his Graveyard and summoning Druiswurm. He then used Druiswurm and Paidra as Link Material to Link Summon Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres, and activated Druiswurm’s effect to send Brower’s Transcendent to the Graveyard, then ended his turn. 

Brower drew Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit for turn. He started by activating the effect of his Sangen Summoning, but Mau responded with the effect of his Hieratic Seal, returning Summoning to the hand and stopping it from resolving. In a separate Chain, Mau activated Seal’s effect to Special Summon Tenpai Dragon Fadra from the Deck, and activated Fadra’s effect to Special Summon Chundra from the Graveyard, and Brower responded with Ghost Ogre to destroy Fadra. Brower then Normal Summoned Chundra and entered the Battle Phase. 

Brower used his Chundra to attack Mau’s Chundra. Both players activated their respective copies of Chundra to Special Summon Tenpai Dragon Paidra from the Deck, as well as their Paidra’s effects to get Sangen Kaimen from their decks. Brower attacked Mau’s Paidra with his Paidra, and then attacked Mau directly with Kuibelt. He activated Transcendent’s ability to Special Summon it out of the Graveyard and attack, then activated Chundra’s effect, using Chundra and Paidra to Synchro Summon Sangenpai Bident Dragion. He activated Bident’s effect Special Summoning Chundra back from the Graveyard. With a field full of Dragon-type monsters that still have the ability to Synchro Summon during the Battle Phase, Mau conceded. 

Brower floods the field with Dragons again, winning the Match!

Brower wins Round 10 and ends the Swiss rounds with an 8-2 record, hoping for a seat in the Top 32!
