We’ve got a Fiendsmith Yubel mirror Match in the Top 8! Craig Hayashi is here from Concord, California, while Carlos Terrazas Hernandez made the trip from Mexicali, Baja. We just saw Terrazas on the live stream, where he used a wild combo of Nightmare Archfiends and Earthbound Release for an instant win!
Duel 1
Hayashi won the dice roll. He began by contact fusing Yubel and Spirit of Yubel from his hand into Phantom of Yubel, and passed the turn.
Terrazas started with Fabled Lurrie, Bystial Druiswurm, Fiendsmith Engraver, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, and Earthbound Release. He drew Nibiru, the Primal Being. He started with Engraver, adding Fiendsmith’s Tract to his hand. He activated Tract, got another Engraver, and discarded Fabled Lurrie to Special Summon it. Terrazas banished Tract to fuse Lurrie and Engraver into Fiendsmith’s Lacrima.
Lacrima targeted Lurrie, and Hayashi responded with Bystial Magnamhut, trying to banish Lurrie. Terrazas responded with his own Druiswurm, also targeting Lurrie. Hayashi Chained Phantom’s effect, altering Druiswurm’s ability. The Chain resolved with Hayashi destroying Spirit of Yubel from his Deck, then banishing Lurrie to Special Summon Magnamhut. Magnamhut activated its effect, and Spirit’s effect brought Yubel to the field.
Terrazas activated Engraver in the Graveyard, returning his other Engraver, and Hayashi had Bystial Baldrake to banish it! Terrazas used Lacrima to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem, then used that to get a new Engraver on the field. He equipped Requiem to Engraver. He used Engraver’s effect, sending Requiem and Hayashi’s Baldrake to the Graveyard. He Normal Summoned Ash Blossom, then Link Summoned Fiendsmith’s Sequence. Before Terrazas could activate it, Hayashi revealed Nibiru, the Primal Being! The field was cleared, and Terrazas received a 3700/2000 Primal Being Token in Defense Position. Terrazas Set Earthbound Release. In the End Phase, Magnamhut’s effect put Bystial Druiswurm in Hayashi’s hand.
In Hayashi’s Draw Phase, Terrazas used his Druiswurm to banish Spirit of Yubel from Hayashi’s Graveyard. Hayashi Special Summoned his own Druiswurm, banishing Engraver from Terrazas’s Graveyard. He used Druiswurm and Nibiru to Link Summon Moon of the Closed Heaven, and Druiswurm removed the Primal Being Token. He used Moon to Link Summon Requiem, and that to get Engraver. He equipped Requiem to his Engraver, then used both cards to Special Summon Necroquip Princess. Hayashi returned Moon to the Extra Deck to Special Summon Engraver. Terrazas revealed his own Nibiru! Hayashi got a Primal Being Token, but it went away immediately thanks to Terrazas’s Druiswurm.
Terrazas drew Effect Veiler. He sent Nibiru to attack directly, dealing the first damage of this Duel.
Hayashi Special Summoned Engraver, returning Requiem to the Extra Deck. He used Engraver to Link Summon the same Requiem, and Special Summoned a new Engraver. He equipped it with Requiem, then used Engraver’s effect to send Requiem and Terrazas’s Nibiru to the Graveyard. He Special Summoned another Druiswurm from his hand, banishing Lacrima from Terrazas’s Graveyard! Hayashi attacked directly with both his monsters. In Main Phase 2, he Link Summoned Fiendsmith’s Sequence, and Terrazas negated it with Effect Veiler. Hayashi fused Yubel from his Graveyard with Spirit of Yubel from his hand into Phantom of Yubel.
Terrazas drew… Druiswurm. This Duel is just Druiswurms and Nibirus! He activated its effect, trying to banish Requiem from Hayashi’s Graveyard. Hayashi used Phantom of Yubel to change Druiswurm’s effect. Terrazas knew it was all over, and conceded the first Duel!
Duel 2
As the Duelists finished Side Decking, Hayashi remarked that he didn’t know what kind of Deck Terrazas was playing. He’d only seen Fiendsmiths, Bystials, and Nibiru. Little did he know, he was in a Yubel mirror.
Terrazas began with Druiswurm, One for One, Nightmare Throne, Earthbound Release, and Nibiru. He played Nightmare Throne, and Hayashi laughed as he realized the matchup, then used Ash Blossom to negate Throne. Terrazas played One for One, discarding Nibiru to Special Summon Samsara D Lotus. It brought Spirit of Yubel to the field. Spirit put Nightmare Pain on the field and he activated it, destroying Spirit to put Gruesome Grave Squirmer in his hand. Spirit of Yubel’s effect brought Yubel to the field. Hayashi used Bystial Baldrake to banish Spirit and Special Summon the Baldrake, trying to prevent Terrazas from getting Phantom of Yubel.
Terrazas Special Summoned Gruesome Grave Squirmer, then used it and Yubel to Link Summon Moon of the Closed Heaven. He used that to Link Summon Requiem, and that to get Engraver. He activated Gruesome Grave Squirmer’s effect in the Graveyard, and Hayashi responded with Magnamhut targeting Yubel in the Graveyard. Terrazas used his own Druiswurm, banishing Yubel first to Special Summon his Bystial and block Hayashi’s.
Gruesome Grave Squirmer’s effect finally brought Lotus to the field. Terrazas used Lotus and Engraver to play Unchained Soul Lord of Yama, adding Unchained Soul of Sharvara to his hand. He returned Requiem to the Extra Deck to Special Summon Engraver, then used Engraver and Yama to Link Summon Sequence. It fused Engraver and Moon into Aerial Eater. Aerial Eater sent Archfiend Heiress to the Graveyard, which put Nightmare Archfiends in his hand. He used Aerial Eater and Druiswurm to Xyz Summon Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal. It sent Transaction Rollback to the Graveyard.
Terrazas Set Nightmare Archfiends and Earthbound Release, then destroyed Earthbound Release with Sharvara. Yama returned Aerial Eater to the field. He used Sharvara and Aerial Eater to play Moon, then used Moon and Sequence to Link Summon Apollousa.
In Hayashi’s Draw Phase, Terrazas flipped Nightmare Archfiends by Tributing Beatrice, giving Hayashi three Nightmare Archfiend Tokens. He then activated Transaction Rollback’s effect in the Graveyard, using it to gain the effects of Earthbound Release! All of the Nightmare Archfiend Tokens were destroyed, along with Baldrake and Apollousa! Between Earthbound Release and the destroyed Nightmare Archfiend Tokens, Hayashi took 10,900 damage!
Duel 3
Hayashi began the final Duel with Nightmare Throne, and Terrazas had Ash Blossom. Hayashi Set three cards.
Terrazas had a hand of Gruesome Grave Squirmer, Nightmare Pain, Chaos Summoning Beast, and Spirit of Yubel. He drew Yubel, and Hayashi flipped Anti-Spell Fragrance. Terrazas contact fused Yubel and Spirit of Yubel into Phantom of Yubel. He Normal Summoned Chaos Summoning Beast, then Special Summoned Gruesome Grave Squirmer. He used them to Link Summon Moon of the Closed Heaven, then Link Summoned Requiem. Hayashi had Solemn Judgment! He paid half his Life Points to negate Requiem’s Link Summon. Terrazas Set Nightmare Pain in the same column as Fragrance, either trying to bluff Infinite Impermanence or to play around an opposing one. In the End Phase, Hayashi Special Summoned Druiswurm by banishing Gruesome Grave Squirmer.
Hayashi Normal Summoned Samsara D Lotus. He used Lotus and Druiswurm to Link Summon Moon. Druiswurm targeted Terrazas’s Phantom of Yubel, and he Chained its effect to destroy Spirit of Yubel in his Deck. It Special Summoned Yubel. Hayashi continued, using Moon to Link Summon Requiem, and that to Special Summon Engraver. He equipped Requiem to Engraver, then used both cards to Special Summon Necroquip Princess. He Special Summoned Engraver by returning Moon, then Link Summoned Unchained Soul Lord of Yama. He added Sharvara to his hand, then activated its effect, destroying his Set Abominable Chamber of the Unchained to Special Summon it. He used both Unchained monsters to Link Summon Unchained Soul of Rage.

Hayashi returned Requiem to his Extra Deck to try and revive Engraver, but Terrazas used Phantom of Yubel to alter the effect, destroying Spirit of Yubel from his Deck. Spirit then Special Summoned Yubel. Hayashi had no other plays, and was forced to attack the Yubel monsters!
