Round 8 Feature Match: Nicholas Marshall vs. Emmad Fajem

October 12th, 2024

Nicholas Marshall from St. Johns, Newfoundland is a YCS first-timer, and he’s currently 5-1-1 in the tournament with his Mimighoul Deck. Mimighoul Decks got a big boost from Rage of the Abyss, and Marshall is using the newly released Giant Mimighoul, Mimighoul Throne, Mimighoul Armor, Mimighoul Slime, and Mimighoul Fairy in his Deck. He’s Dueling against Emmad Fajem from Hamilton, Ontario in the last Feature Match of Day 1! Emmad is using a using a Snake-Eye Rescue-ACE Deck featuring the Azamina cards from Rage of the Abyss, and he also holds a 5-1-1 record. Both Duelists are guaranteed to make it into Day 2 at this point, but a victory in this Swiss Round will give one of them a better chance at making tomorrow’s Top Cut after 2 more Swiss Rounds are played. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

Marshall won the die roll and chose to go first.

He opened up with Mimighoul Dungeon, Triple Tactics Thrust, Mimighoul Room, Dimension Shifter, and Droll & Lock Bird. He activated the effect of Dimension Shifter in the Draw Phase and then activated Mimighoul Dungeon. He used its effect to add Mimighoul Dragon from his Deck to his hand and then Normal Summoned it. He used Dragon’s effect to add Mimighoul Maker from his Deck to his hand. Next, he activated Maker. He revealed Mimighoul Archfiend and Mimighoul Slime from his Deck, and Fajem randomly selected the Archfiend. Fajem Set it to his field, and Marshall Special Summoned the Slime. Next, Marshall combined his monsters to Xyz Summon Giant Mimighoul and used its effect to add Mimighoul Room to his hand. He Set a Room and then ended his turn.

Fajem drew a card and then activated Super Polymerization! He discarded RESCUE! to fuse his face-down Archfiend with the Giant Mimighoul and Summon Mudragon of the Swamp. Marshall activated Mimighoul Room, but lost out to Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Next, Fajem Normal Summoned Rescue-ACE Air Lifter and used its effect to add Rescue-ACE HQ from his Deck to his hand. He entered his Battle Phase and then attacked directly with Air Lifter and Mudragon, dropping Marshall down to 4400 Life Points. He then used his Mudragon’s effect to switch its Attribute to FIRE and activated EMERGENCY!. He Special Summoned Rescue-ACE Turbulence from his Deck in Defense Position, then Tributed Air Lifter. He used its effect to Set ALERT!, CONTAIN!, EMERGENCY!, and EXTINGUISH! from his Deck and then ended his turn.

Marshall drew Mimighoul Dungeon and then Fajem activated EMERGENCY! in the Draw Phase. He Special Summoned Rescue-ACE Hydrant and Tributed Rescue-ACE Preventer from his hand. Next, he used the Preventer’s effect to Special Summon Air Lifter, and used Air Lifter’s effect to add another EMERGENCY! to his hand. Marshall used his Dungeon’s effect to add a Mimighoul Dragon to his hand. He Normal Summoned it and activated its effect, but Fajem flipped CONTAIN! to negate its effect and stop it from being used as a material in a Summon later in the turn. Marshall Set Mimighoul Room and then ended his turn. In the End Phase, Fajem flipped ALERT! to add Rescue-ACE Preventer to his hand.

Fajem activated HQ next turn and used its effect to return CONTAIN!, EMERGENCY!, ALERT!, and Preventer from his Graveyard and banishment to his Deck and draw a card. This prompted Marshall to use the effect of Droll & Lock Bird. He flipped EXTINGUISH! to destroy Dragon and switched Turbulence into Attack Position. He used its effect to Set RESCUE!, ALERT!, and EMERGENCY! from his Deck to his field and then used Mudragon’s effect to make it a FIRE monster again. He sent Hydrant and Air Lifter to the Graveyard to Link Summon Knightmare Phoenix and used its effect to try to destroy Marshall’s face-down Mimighoul Room. He Chained it, and Fajem activated Dominus Impulse to negate it. Marshall conceded, knowing the Duel would be over in mere moments.

Emmad Fajem takes the first victory! Marshall chose to go second in Duel 2.

Duel Two

Fajem started the Duel, and Marshall activated the effect of Mulcharmy Purulia in the Draw Phase.

Fajem activated The Hallowed Azamina in the Main Phase and Chained WANTED: Seeker of Sinful Spoils. Marshall Chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate the effect of WANTED, and then The Hallowed Azamina resolved. He revealed Azamina Mu Rcielago from his Extra Deck, sent WANTED to the Graveyard, and then Special Summoned Mu Rcielago. He activated its effect to add Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye to his hand and then activated it by sending Mu Rcielago the Graveyard. He Special Summoned Hydrant from his Deck and then used the effect of The Hallowed Azamina to return it to his hand by returning Mu Rcielago to his Extra Deck. He then banished WANTED from his Graveyard and returned Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye to his Deck to draw a card. Next, he used his Hydrant’s effect to add Rescue-ACE Impulse from his Deck to his hand. He Special Summoned Diabellstar the Black Witch by sending a Snake-Eyes Poplar from his hand to his Graveyard, allowing Marshall to draw a card with his Purulia’s effect. Fajem used the effects of Diabellstar and Poplar. He put Poplar in his back row and Set Deception of the Sinful Spoils. He flipped it and then activated The Hallowed Azamina once again. He revealed Azamina Ilia Silvia from his Extra Deck, sent Deception to the Graveyard, and then Special Summoned the Ilia Silvia. He Set a card to his back row, then Set Deception from his Graveyard to his field with its effect in the End Phase.

Marshall drew Mimighoul Fairy and added it to his hand of Kashtira Fenrir, Mimighoul Dragon, Mimighoul Maker, and Mimighoul Dungeon. He Special Summoned Fenrir and used its effect. Fajem Chained the effect of the Rescue-ACE Impulse in his hand by Tributing it. He Special Summoned Rescue-ACE Preventer from his Deck with Impulse’s effect and Marshall added Kashtira Unicorn to his hand with Fenrir’s effect. In a new Chain, Marshall activated Fenrir’s effect to try to banish a card face-down, and Fajem negated Fenrir’s effect with Infinite Impermanence. Next, Marshall activated Mimighoul Maker, and Fajem negated its effect with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Fajem activated Mimighoul Dungeon next and Fajem activated the effect of Azamina Ilia Silvia by Tributing it, not realizing that negating the card at that point would be of new consequence to Marshall. Marshall activated Dungeon’s effect next, and added Mimighoul Armor to his hand. He Normal Summoned Mimighoul Dragon and used its effect to add Mimighoul Room to his hand. He sent Dragon to the Graveyard to Link Summon Relinquished Anima with its Link Arrow pointing to Preventer, and then activated Anima’s effect. Fajem Chained Preventer’s effect to put Fenrir face-down, and the Anima’s effect resolved. Next, Marshall Special Summoned Mimighoul Armor from his hand, followed by Mimighoul Fairy. He combined his Level 1 monsters to Xyz Summon Giant Mimighoul and used the Giant’s effect to add Mimighoul Dungeon from his Deck to his hand. He entered his Battle Phase and then attacked the Hydrant with the Giant to destroy it. Anima attacked Diabellstar next to destroy it, and Fajem used his Diabellstar’s effect. He sent a Poplar from his field to the Graveyard to bring Diabellstar back, and then used the effects of Diabellstar and Poplar. He returned Poplar to his back row with Poplar’s effect and Set WANTED from his Deck with Diabellstar’s effect. In Main Phase 2, Marshall Xyz Summoned Downerd Magician over the Giant, and then Xyz Summoned Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS – Sky Thunder over the Downerd Magician! He detached 2 Xyz Materials from ZEUS to send all cards on the field to the Graveyard, leaving Fajem with nothing in his hand or on his field! Marshall activated Mimighoul Dungeon in Main Phase 2 and then ended his turn.

Fajem drew a card and Marshall flipped Mimighoul Room to Set Slime to Fajem’s field. Next, Fajem used The Hallowed Azamina’s effect in his Graveyard to return it to his hand, and used the effect of the WANTED in his Graveyard to banish it, return Deception from his Graveyard to his Deck, and draw a card. Fajem activated RESCUE! to Special Summon Hydrant from his Graveyard and used its effect to add Rescue-ACE Preventer to his hand. He Special Summoned it by banishing Impulse from his Graveyard and then used its effect to put ZEUS face-down. He sent Hydrant and Preventer to the Graveyard to Link Summon Hiita the Fire Charmer, Ablaze and then used Preventer’s effect to Special Summon his banished Impulse. He then used Hiita’s effect to Special Summon Ash from Marshall’s Graveyard and then used Hiita and Ash to Link Summon Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames. He used its effect to Special Summon Preventer. Next, he used Princess and Impulse as Link Materials to Link Summon Salamangreat Raging Phoenix. He used the Phoenix as a Link Material to Summon Worldsea Dragon Zealantis. He used Zealantis’s effect to banish all monsters on the field and Summon them back. On resolution, the Promethean Princess in the Graveyard used its effect and targeted Preventer and Slime to destroy both targeted monsters and Summon itself back to the field. On a new Chain, Fajem Special Summoned Raging Phoenix from the Graveyard back to the field with 5600 ATK. He entered his Battle Phase and then used his Zealantis’s effect. Since Zealantis and Promethean Princess were co-linked, he was able to destroy 2 cards on the field. He destroyed Mimighoul Dungeon and ZEUS, leaving Marshall with nothing left on his field! Direct attacks from Raging Phoenix, Zealantis, and Promethean Princess wiped out all 8000 of Marshall’s Life Points.

Nicholas Marshall puts up a good fight with his Mimighoul Deck, but Emmad Fajem manages to take the win to advance with a 6-1-1 record going into Day 2 of YCS Niagara Falls!
