Top 16 Feature Match: Bobby Kenny vs. Austin Colling
Just 16 Duelists remain! We’ve got Orlando Duelist Bobby Kenny back in the Feature Match seat, playing his unique Millennium Fiendsmith Centur-Ion Deck. Kenny’s often found playing unique builds, which have carried him to multiple Top Cut finishes. He’s facing Austin Colling, from Cleveland, with a Fire King Snake-Eye Azamina Deck. Colling’s also got a ton of accomplishments, most recently competing in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel World Championship!
Duel 1
Colling won the die roll, and started with WANTED: Seeker of Sinful Spoils in the Draw Phase, adding Diabellstar the Black Witch to his hand. He Special Summoned Diabellstar by sending Fire King High Avatar Kirin to the Graveyard, and Kenny had Effect Veiler. Colling used Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye, sending Diabellstar to the Graveyard, and Kenny used Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Colling used WANTED’s Graveyard effect, returning Original to the Deck to draw a card.
Kenny activated Fiendsmith Engraver’s effect in his hand, adding Fiendsmith’s Tract to his hand. He played it, and Colling asked if he was going to add Evil HERO Adusted Gold to his hand. Kenny laughed as he instead found Fabled Lurrie and discarded it, and Special Summoned it with its effect. He Link Summoned Fiendsmith’s Requiem, which Special Summoned Lacrima the Crimson Tears from his hand. He used Lacrima to send Fiendsmith Engraver to the Graveyard. He Normal Summoned Agnima Candle and Synchro Summoned Centur-Ion Primera Primus, and Colling negated it with Infinite Impermanence. Kenny returned Lurrie to his Deck to Special Summon Engraver from the Graveyard. He used Engraver and Primera Primus to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Sequence. He activated Sequence, and Colling had another Infinite Impermanence. Kenny attacked directly with Sequence. He passed, each Duelist with just one card in hand.
Colling passed with no play. In the End Phase, Kenny used Lacrima’s Graveyard effect, returning Requiem to the field.
Kenny used Requiem’s effect to Special Summon Lacrima again, which sent his third Engraver to the Graveyard. He tried using Sequence, but Colling had a third Infinite Impermanence! Kenny played Bonfire to add Centur-Ion Trudea to his hand, and Normal Summoned it. Trudea’s effect put itself and Centur-Ion Primera in his back row. He Special Summoned Primera, adding Stand Up Centur-Ion! to his hand. He played that, using it to pitch Centur-Ion Bonds and get Centur-Ion Gargoyle II in his back row. He Special Summoned Gargoyle, using it and Primera to Synchro Summon Centur-Ion Auxila. Gargoyle went back to his hand, and he added Wake Up Centur-Ion! to his hand. He played Wake Up to Special Summon a Centur-Ion Token, then used Wake Up’s other effect to put Centur-Ion Phalanx in the Graveyard. He Special Summoned an Engraver by returning another copy. That was enough ATK on the field to end the first Duel!
Duel 2
Colling began this time by Normal Summoning Legendary Fire King Ponix. Kenny hit it with Infinite Impermanence. “Oh my god, no Kirin,” he said, not expecting his Trap Card to have actually resolved. Colling continued, using WANTED to find Diabellstar. He sent Ponix to the Graveyard to Special Summon Diabellstar, and Kenny had Effect Veiler just like last time. Colling played Bonfire, adding Snake-Eyes Poplar to his hand. He Special Summoned Poplar and added Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye to his hand. He played it, sending Poplar to the Graveyard to Special Summon Snake-Eye Oak. Poplar returned as a Continuous Spell, and Oak revived Ponix. He used Oak’s effect, sending itself and Poplar to the Graveyard to Special Summon Snake-Eyes Flamberge Dragon. Colling drew a card with WANTED’s Graveyard effect, putting Original back in the Deck. He used Diabellstar and Flamberge to Link Summon I:P Masquerena. Flamberge revived Poplar and Oak. He used Poplar and Masquerena to Link Summon Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames, which revived Flamberge. Flamberge put his Masquerena on the field as a Continuous Spell. He used Promethean Princess and Oak to Link Summon Amphibious Swarmship Amblowhale, and finally he Set one back row card.
Kenny Normal Summoned Trudea. He used its effect, but Colling had Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy it! Kenny used Emblema Oath to put Centur-Ion Primera on the field as a Continuous Trap, and he Special Summoned it to add Stand Up Centur-Ion! to his hand. Colling hit him with Droll & Lock Bird, and Kenny conceded! He still had to play through Colling’s Masquerena and Promethean Princess effects, and wouldn’t be able to make it happen after Droll.
Duel 3
Kenny began the final Duel with… nothing?! He passed the first turn.
Colling Normal Summoned Snake-Eye Ash, adding Snake-Eyes Poplar to his hand. He activated Poplar’s effect, and Kenny responded with Droll & Lock Bird. Poplar hit the field, but couldn’t activate its effect now. Colling used Poplar to Link Summon Relinquished Anima, and Poplar returned as a Continuous Spell. He used Ash’s effect, sending itself and Poplar to the Graveyard to Special Summon Snake-Eyes Flamberge Dragon. He used Flamberge and Anima to Link Summon Hiita the Fire Charmer, Ablaze, and Flamberge revived Ash and Poplar. He used Hiita and Poplar to Link Summon Promethean Princess. He tried using Princess to revive Flamberge, Kenny used Effect Veiler, and Colling had Fire King High Avatar Kirin! Kirin destroyed Princess to be Special Summoned, and Effect Veiler had no target now. Princess’s effect revived Flamberge. Ash, Kirin, and Flamberge attacked directly to drop Kenny to 1800 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Colling used Kirin and Ash to Link Summon I:P Masquerena. He used Flamberge to put Kirin on the field as a Continuous Spell.
Kenny activated Bystial Magnamhut, banishing Anima. He Normal Summoned Centur-Ion Atrii, and Colling responded with I:P Masquerena, but Kenny had Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy it before it could Link Summon! Kenny used Triple Tactics Talent to steal a monster, and Colling responded with Flamberge to Special Summon his Kirin in Defense Position. Kenny took control of Kirin. He used Atrii and Kirin to Synchro Summon Centur-Ion Legatia, and its effect was negated by Colling’s Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Legatia attacked over Flamberge Dragon, and Flamberge Special Summoned Ash and Poplar. Colling used their effects to put Legendary Fire King Ponix and Original Sinful Spoils in his hand. Magnamhut attacked Ash. That let Colling Special Summon Ponix, which added Fire King Sanctuary to his hand. In Main Phase 2, Kenny used Legatia and Magnamhut to Link Summon S:P Little Knight, targeting Promethean Princess in Colling’s Graveyard. Colling activated Princess in response, and Kenny knew it was all over from here!
Austin Colling moves on to the Top 8 with Fire King Snake-Eye Azamina! After the Match, the Duelists talked over a few ways that last Duel could have gone differently. In particular, if Triple Tactics Talent had stolen Flamberge, it could have put the Snake-Eye Ash from Colling’s Graveyard into the back row, before attacking Kirin. That would have left no FIRE monsters on Colling’s field for Princess, and not enough Level 1 monsters for Flamberge to revive if Kenny used it as an Extra Deck material. It was unclear if that would have changed the outcome of the Duel, but it’s important to always look for ways to improve where you can.
