Round 1 Feature Match: Jesse Simnegar vs. Adrian Raudelio Grijvala
Things are just getting started here at YCS Anaheim! A brand new set, Crossover Breakers, was just released, and it introduces several new archetypes to the game. Jesse Simnegar is piloting the brand new Maliss strategy. Maliss is a DARK Cyberse theme that focuses on swarming the field and summoning big Cyberse monsters. Across the table from him is Adrian Raudelio Grijvala, playing his trusted Tenpai Dragon Deck. Tenpai Dragon Decks have been popular for a while due to the Deck’s ability to end games quickly in the Battle Phase. Which of these players will start off their tournament journey with a win? We’re about to find out. It’s time to Duel!
Duel 1
Simnegar’s opening hand consisted of Dimension Shifter, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Cynet Mining, Triple Tactics Talent, and Infinite Impermanence. During the Draw Phase, Grijalva activated Mulcharmy Fuwalos, but Simnegar Chained the effect of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Next, he activated Cynet Mining, discarding Dimension Shifter to add Maliss <P> Dormouse to his hand.

He Normal Summoned Dormouse, banishing Maliss <P> White Rabbit from his Deck, then activated White Rabbit’s effect to Special Summon it and Set Maliss <C> TB-11 from his Deck. He used Dormouse and White Rabbit to Link Summon Haggard Lizardose, and used its effect by banishing Dormouse from his Graveyard. Then he activated Dormouse’s effect, Special Summoning it back to his side of the field! He used Dormouse and Lizardose to Link Summon Maliss <Q> Red Ransom, adding Maliss in Underground from his Deck to his hand with Red Random’s effect. Next, he activated Maliss <C> TB-11, banishing Red Ransom to activate it in the turn that it was Set to Special Summon Maliss <P> Chessy Cat from his Deck. He activated Red Ransom’s effect to Special Summon it back to the field and banish Dotscaper from his Deck, then activated Dotscaper’s effect to Special Summon it. He used Chessy Cat to Link Summon Link Decoder and then used Red Ransom, Link Decoder, and Dotscaper to Link Summon Maliss <Q> White Binder! He Special Summoned Link Decoder back to the field with its effect and used White Binder’s effect to banish Maliss <C> TB-11 and Chessy Cat from his Graveyard. He used Chessy Cat’s effect to Special Summon the Chessy Cat.
He activated White Binder’s other effect next, Setting Maliss <C> GWC-06 from the Deck, then used White Binder and Link Decoder as Link Materials to Link Summon Firewall Dragon! He activated Maliss in Underground to banish White Binder from the Graveyard, but when he activated White Binder’s effect to Special Summon it, Grijalva Chained Dominus Impulse, negating the effect! Simnegar Set a card to his back row and ended his turn.
Grijalva started by Normal Summoning Tenpai Dragon Paidra and activating its effect, but Simnegar Chained Infinite Impermanence! Simnegar then activated Maliss <C> GWC-06 to Special Summon his banished White Binder. He activated its effect, targeting and banishing Red Ransom and White Rabbit, then activated their effects to Special Summon them to his side of the field. He activated Red Ransom’s effect to add Maliss in Underground to his hand, as well as White Rabbit’s effect to Set Maliss <C> MTP-07 from his Deck.
Grijalva entered the Battle Phase. Thanks to Maliss in Underground, Grijalva was unable to attack Simnegar’s Chessy Cat. He activated Sangen Kaimen, but Simnegar was able to wall himself up with several more monsters. Grijalva didn’t have a way to push through Simnegar’s abundance of monsters, and knowing that Simnegar could make a big push with his Maliss monsters next turn, Grijalva conceded the first Duel.

Jesse Simnegar takes the first victory of the Match with his Maliss Deck!

Grijalva started by Normal Summoning Tenpai Dragon Paidra, but Simnegar Chained Infinite Impermanence to negate Paidra’s effect! Grijalva then activated Tenpai Dragon Chundra’s effect in hand, Special Summoning it, then entered the Battle Phase. He attacked Simnegar directly with Paidra, then activated Chundra’s effect to Special Summon Tenpai Dragon Genroku from the Deck and attack with it. He activated Chundra’s effect to Synchro Summon Sangenpai Bident Dragion, activating Bident’s effect to Special Summon Chundra from the Graveyard. Grijalva attacked directly with Chundra and Bident, then activated Genroku’s effect, Tributing it to Special Summon Tenpai Dragon Fadra. He activated Fadra’s effect, Special Summoning back Paidra from the Graveyard, and attacked Simnegar directly to win the second Duel!

Duel 3
Simnegar chose to go first in Duel 3! His hand consisted of Dimension Shifter, Cynet Mining, Dimensional Barrier, Maliss <C> GWC-06, and Maliss in Underground. Grijalva activated the effect of Mulcharmy Purulia from his hand, so he will be drawing a card every time Simnegar Normal Summons or Special Summons a monster from his hand! Simnegar started by activating Dimension Shifter, then activated Maliss in Underground, using its effect to banish Maliss <P> Dormouse from his Deck. He activated Dormouse’s effects to Special Summon it and then banish Maliss <P> White Rabbit from his Deck. He used the White Rabbit’s effect to Special Summon it back to the field, then activated White Rabbit’s other effect to Set Maliss <C> TB-11 from his Deck. He Set 2 cards to his backrow, then ended his turn. Grijalva didn’t draw any cards with Purulia’s effect during the first turn!
Grijalva started by activating Raigeki, destroying Simnegar’s White Rabbit and Dormouse! However, the cards were banished thanks to the effect of Dimension Shifter, so Simnegar paid 600 Life Points to Special Summon both of them back to his side of the field, and activated White Rabbit’s effect to Set Maliss <C> MTP-07 from his Deck. Grijalva Normal Summoned Tenpai Dragon Genroku and entered the Battle Phase. He used Genroku to attack the Defense Position Dormouse, then activated Genroku’s effect, Special Summoning Tenpai Dragon Chundra from the Deck. He used Chundra to attack White Rabbit, and Simnegar chose to activate Dimensional Barrier, calling Synchro Monsters! Grijalva activated Genroku’s effect, Tributing it and Special Summoning Tenpai Dragon Paidra from his Deck, and activated its effect to add Sangen Kaimen from his Deck to his hand. He used the Paidra to attack Dormouse, then used Genroku and Paidra to Link Summon Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres. During the End Phase, Simnegar activated Maliss <C> TB-11, but Grijalva Chained Dominus Impulse from his hand, negating TB-11’s effect!
Simnegar drew Maliss <P> Chessy Cat for turn! He activated Maliss <C> GWC-06, Special Summoning his banished Dormouse, then activated Dormouse’s effect to banish another Chessy Cat from his Deck. He paid 300 Life Points to Special Summon back the Chessy Cat, and activated its effect, banishing the Chessy Cat from his hand to draw 2 cards, which were Triple Tactics Talent and another copy of Cynet Mining! He used Dormouse and Chessy Cat to Link Summon Haggard Lizardose, then activated Lizardose’s effect, banishing Dormouse. He activated Dormouse’s effect to Special Summon it back. He activated Cynet Mining, discarding the other Cynet Mining from his hand to add EM:P Meowmine from his Deck to his hand! He Special Summoned Meowmine, then used Meowmine, Lizardose, and Dormouse to Link Summon Maliss <Q> Hearts Crypter! Simnegar entered the Battle Phase, with Grijalva unable to activate the effect of his Hieratic Spheres since he activated Dominus Impulse from his hand in the turn prior. He attacked Spheres with Crypter, then activated Crypter’s effect, banishing itself. He paid 900 Life Points to Special Summon Crypter back to the field, but this time, its Attack Points doubled to 5000, so it attacked directly to end the Duel!

Simnegar wins the third Duel and starts off the tournament 1-0 with his Maliss Deck!
