Round 11 Feature Match: Triston Delaney Scott vs. Michael Brandon Aviles

December 8th, 2024

We’re almost there! It’s the last Swiss round here at YCS Anaheim, and players are hoping to make it to the Top 32 playoff. Both Triston Delaney Scott and Michael Brandon Aviles have an 8-2 record, so both players need to win this round in order to have a chance of advancing into the Top Cut. Scott is playing the Fiendsmith Snake-Eye Deck, a strategy that has been extremely successful for a while, while Aviles is bringing the brand new Ryzeal strategy to the first YCS he has ever attended. It’s a battle of old versus new as these two players attempt to advance. Let’s find out who will be moving on! It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Scott won the die roll and chose to go first! His opening hand contained Fabled Lurrie, Divine Temple of the Snake-Eye, Snake-Eyes Poplar, Fiendsmith’s Tract, and Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. He started by activating Fiendsmith’s Tract, adding Lacrima the Crimson Tears to his hand and discarding Fabled Lurrie, then Special Summoned Lurrie with its effect. He then used Lurrie to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem. Scott activated Requiem’s effect, and when Aviles responded with Mulcharmy Fuwalos, Scott Chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring! Scott resolved his Requiem’s effect, Special Summoning Fiendsmith Engraver from the Deck.

Scott followed up by activating Divine Temple of the Snake-Eye, placing Snake-Eyes Diabellstar to his Spell & Trap Card Zone. He then Normal Summoned Snake-Eyes Poplar, adding Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye to his hand with its effect. He used Engraver and Poplar to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Sequence, and used it to Fusion Summon Fiendsmith Desirae with Lurrie, Requiem, and Engraver. Scott then activated Original, sending Sequence to the Graveyard, but Aviles Chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring! Scott activated Snake-Eyes Diabellstar’s effect, Special Summoning it and placing Poplar into the Spell & Trap Card Zone, then equipped Sequence to Desirae. Here, Aviles activated the effect of Nibiru the Primal Being, Tributing all monsters on the field and giving Scott a Primal Being Token! Scott activated the effect of the Desirae sent to the Graveyard, sending Aviles’s Nibiru to the Graveyard, then ended his turn.

Aviles started by Normal Summoning Ice Ryzeal, Special Summoning Sword Ryzeal from the Deck and searching for Ext Ryzeal, as Scott used his Divine Temple to Special Summon Poplar from the Spell & Trap Card Zone. Aviles then Special Summoned Ext by sending Ryzeal Detonator from his Extra Deck to the Graveyard and added another Sword to his hand. He used Ext and Sword to Xyz Summon Ryzeal Duo Drive, attached Detonator to Duo Drive, and activated Duo Drive’s effect to add Ryzeal Cross and Ryzeal Plugin from his Deck to his hand. He activated Cross, then Normal Summoned Node Ryzeal, and used Node and Ice to Link Summon Light Dragon @Ignister. He used Light Dragon to destroy the Primal Being Token, then activated Plugin, Special Summoning Node from the Graveyard. He entered the Battle Phase and used Node to attack Poplar, and Scott used Poplar’s effect to place Snake-Eyes Diabellstar into the Spell & Trap Card Zone. Aviles then attacked Scott directly with Light Dragon and Duo Drive. In Main Phase 2, Aviles used the effect of Node, sending Light Dragon to the Graveyard to Special Summon Ext, then used Ice and Ext to Xyz Summon Ryzeal Detonator and attach it with Light Dragon. He used Cross to return Plugin and Detonator to the Deck and Extra Deck respectively in order to draw a card, then ended his turn.

Scott drew Mulcharmy Fuwalos for turn! He Normal Summoned Lacrima the Crimson Tears and activated its effect, but Aviles Chained Detonator’s effect to destroy Lacrima. Then on resolution, he used Cross to negate Lacrima’s effect. Unable to push any further, Scott conceded the first Duel.

Duel 2

Scott chose to go first, with an opening hand of Mulcharmy Fuwalos, The Hallowed Azamina, Fiendsmith’s Tract, Infinite Impermanence, and Snake-Eye Ash. He started by activating Tract, adding Fabled Lurrie to his hand and then discarding it, then Special Summoned Lurrie with its effect. He used Lurrie to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem, then used Requiem’s effect to Special Summon Lacrima the Crimson Tears and send Fiendsmith Engraver to the Graveyard with Lacrima’s effect. He activated Engraver’s effect in the Graveyard, Special Summoning it by returning Lurrie to the Deck, then used Lacrima and Lurrie to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Sequence. He used Sequence’s effect to Fusion Summon Fiendsmith’s Desirae.

Next, Scott Normal Summoned Snake-Eye Ash, added Snake-Eyes Poplar to his hand and Special Summoned it, then added Divine Temple of the Snake-Eye from his Deck to his hand with Poplar’s effect. He activated Temple, placing Snake-Eyes Diabellstar into his Spell & Trap Card Zone, then sent Ash and Diabellstar to the Graveyard to Special Summon Snake-Eye Oak from the Deck with Ash’s effect. He activated Oak’s effect to Special Summon back Ash, but here, Aviles activated the effect of Nibiru the Primal Being in his hand! Scott used Poplar’s effect to place Snake-Eyes Diabellstar into the Spell & Trap Card Zone, and Desirae’s effect to send Aviles’ Nibiru to the Graveyard. He attempted to Special Summon Snake-Eyes Diabellstar, but Aviles Chained the effect of Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy it!

Aviles started by Normal Summoning Ice Ryzeal, Special Summoning Sword Ryzeal from the Deck and adding Ext Ryzeal to his hand. He used Ice and Sword to Xyz Summon Tornado Dragon, destroying Scott’s face-down Infinite Impermanence, then Special Summoned Ext Ryzeal by sending Mereologic Aggregator to the Graveyard. He added Node Ryzeal from his Deck to his hand. Aviles Special Summoned Node and Sword from his hand, then used Ext and Sword to Xyz Summon Light Dragon @Ignister, activating its effect to destroy the Primal Being Token. Aviles then activated Node’s effect, sending Light Dragon to the Graveyard to Special Summon back Sword, and used Node and Sword to Xyz Summon Ryzeal Detonator and attach Aggregator to it. Aviles entered the Battle Phase and attacked Scott directly with Tornado Dragon and Detonator, then ended his turn.

Scott drew Lacrima the Crimson Tears for turn! He Normal Summoned Lacrima, sending Fiendsmith Engraver to the Graveyard as Aviles activated Detonator’s effect to destroy Lacrima. Scott Special Summoned the Engraver from his Graveyard, used it to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem, then used Requiem to Special Summon another Engraver from the Deck. Scott attempted to equip Engraver with Requiem, but Aviles responded by activating Detonator’s effect to destroy the Engraver. Without any follow up plays, Scott conceded.

Aviles wins the match and ends the Swiss rounds with a 9-2 record! He’s hopeful that he’ll make it into the Top Cut at his first YCS. Stay tuned to see coverage from the Top 32 here at YCS Anaheim!
