Round 2 Feature Match: Kenny Huy Nguyen vs. Anthony Dominic Rovero II

December 7th, 2024

We’re on to Round 2 here at YCS Anaheim! In this Swiss Round’s Feature Match, we have the two newest strategies from Crossover Breakers set to face off. Kenny Huy Nguyen is playing Ryzeal, with a small Fiendsmith engine being used to get an additional Level 4 monster on the field. On the other hand, Anthony Dominic Rovero II is playing a pure Maliss deck! Both of these players won their first Swiss Round, but only one will continue with a 2-0 record. It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Nguyen won the dice roll and chose to go first! Nguyen started by activating Bonfire, adding Ice Ryzeal from his Deck to his hand. He Normal Summoned Ice, then Special Summoned Sword Ryzeal from his Deck, allowing him to add Ext Ryzeal from his Deck to his hand. He used Sword and Ice to Link Summon Moon of the Closed Heaven, then used it as a Link Material to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem. However, when he activated Requiem’s effect, Rovero Chained the effect of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate it!

Next, Nguyen Special Summoned Ext by sending Evilswarm Exciton Knight from his Extra Deck to the Graveyard, and added Node Ryzeal from his Deck to his hand with the effect of Ext. He then Special Summoned Node, then activated its effect, sending Mulcharmy Fuwalos to the Graveyard to Special Summon Sword Ryzeal from the Graveyard. He used Sword and Ice to Xyz Summon Ryzeal Duo Drive, attaching Sword to it as an Xyz Material with its effect. He attempted to activate its other effect by detaching 2 Xyz Materials, but Rovero Chained Infinite Impermanence to negate it. Nguyen ended his turn.

The remaining cards in Rovero’s hand were Maliss <P> Dormouse, Gold Sarcophagus, and Infinite Impermanence, and he drew a copy of Maliss <P> Chessy Cat for turn. Rovero Set a card to his backrow, then Normal Summoned Maliss <P> Dormouse. Rovero activated its effect, and even though Rovero had Set a card to his back row as a bluff, Nguyen responded with Infinite Impermanence, negating Dormouse’s effect. Rovero then activated Gold Sarcophagus, banishing Maliss <P> White Rabbit from his Deck, then activated White Rabbit’s effect, Special Summoning it to his side of the field. He used its other effect to Set Maliss <C> TB-11 from his Deck. He used Dormouse and White Rabbit to Link Summon Haggard Lizardose, used Lizardose’s effect to banish Dormouse, then activated Dormouse’s effect to Special Summon it back to the field. He used Lizardose and Dormouse to Link Summon Maliss <Q> Red Ransom, adding Maliss in Underground to his hand, then activated Maliss <C> TB-11, banishing Red Ransom to summon Maliss <P> Chessy Cat from his Deck. He activated Red Ransom’s effect, Special Summoning it and banishing Dotscaper from his Deck. He then Special Summoned Dotscaper, then activated Chessy Cat’s effect. He banished Dormouse from his hand to draw Code of Soul and Maliss <C> GWC-06. He used Chessy Cat to Link Summon Link Decoder, then used all three monsters on his side of the Field to Link Summon Maliss <Q> White Binder! This allowed Rovero to banish Requiem from Nguyen’s Graveyard, as well as Chessy Cat and Red Ransom from his own Graveyard. Nguyen Chained the effect of Effect Veiler, but Rovero responded by activating Maliss <C> GWC-06, banishing the White Binder and allowing its effect to resolve! With no other interruptions available to him and seeing all of the Maliss monsters set to return to the field, Nguyen chose to concede the first Duel.

Anthony Rovero wins the first Duel with his Maliss Deck!

Duel 2

Nguyen chose to go first again! He started by summoning Ice Ryzeal, and activated its effect to Special Summon Sword Ryzeal from the Deck, adding Ext Ryzeal to his hand. He used the two monsters to Link Summon Moon of the Closed Heaven, then used Moon to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem. He activated Requiem’s effect, Tributing it to Special Summon Lacrima the Crimson Tears from his Deck, then sent Fiendsmith Engraver to the Graveyard with Lacrima’s effect. He then Special Summoned Ext Ryzeal by sending Evilswarm Exciton Knight from his Extra Deck to the Graveyard, and added Node Ryzeal to his hand with the effect of Ext. He used Lacrima and Ext to Xyz Summon Number 60: Dugares the Timeless, then activated the effect of Dugares to draw 2 cards and discard Triple Tactics Talent. He Set a card to his backrow and ended his turn. During the End Phase, Rovero activated Bystial Magnamhut’s effect, banishing Nguyen’s Lacrima and Special Summoning the Maganmhut; but when he attempted to add a Bystial from his Deck to his hand during the End Phase, Nguyen Chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring

Rovero’s hand contained Maliss <P> Chessy Cat, Maliss <P> White Rabbit, Maliss in Underground, and Effect Veiler, and then he drew Maliss <C> GWC-06 for his turn. Rovero Set GWC-06 to his back row, then Normal Summoned Maliss <P> White Rabbit, Setting a Maliss <C> TB-11 to his back row with its effect. He activated TB-11 by banishing the White Rabbit from his side of the field to Special Summon Maliss <P> Dormouse from his Deck, and he paid 300 Life Points to Special Summon the banished White Rabbit. Rovero activated Dormouse’s effect, but Nguyen responded with Artifact Lancea, preventing Rovero from banishing cards for the rest of the turn!

Rovero used Dormouse and White Rabbit to Link Summon Splash Mage, then activated Mage’s effect to Special Summon Dormouse from the Graveyard. He used Mage and Dormouse to Link Summon Maliss <Q> White Binder, and activated its effect to Set Maliss <C> TB-11 back from his Graveyard. Here, Nguyen activated the effect of Nibiru the Primal Being, Tributing all monsters on the field and giving Rovero a Primal Being Token! Rovero ended his turn.

Nguyen was unable to draw a card during the Draw Phase because of the effect of Dugares! He started by Special Summoning Fiendmith Engraver from his Graveyard by returning Moon to his Extra Deck, then equipped Engraver with Requiem. He used Engraver’s effect to send Requiem and White Binder to the Graveyard. Next, he summoned Node Ryzeal, then attempted to activate its effect, sending Triple Tactics Thrust to the Graveyard. Rovero responded with the effect of Effect Veiler, but Nguyen Chained Called by the Grave to banish Effect Veiler! Nguyen resolved Node’s effect, Special Summoning Ice Ryzeal from his Graveyard.

Nguyen entered the Battle Phase, attacking Rovero’s Life Points directly with Node, Engraver, and Ice. However, when Nguyen attacked with Nibiru, Rovero activated Maliss <C> GWC-06, Special Summoning White Binder from his Graveyard and increasing his Life Points by 2300! Rovero banished Dormouse, White Rabbit, and Requiem from their respective Graveyards, and then activated Dormouse’s and White Rabbit’s effects to Special Summon them to the field. He used White Rabbit to Set Maliss <C> MTP-07 from his Deck. Continuing with the Battle Phase, Nguyen used Nibiru to attack Dormouse.

In Main Phase 2, Nguyen used Ice and Node to Xyz Summon Ryzeal Detonator, activating its effect to attach material to it from his Graveyard. Rovero activated Maliss <C> MTP-07, banishing White Binder from his field to add Dormouse to his hand, and Nguyen responded by activating Detonator’s effect to destroy Rovero’s White Rabbit. Rovero activated White Binder’s effect, Special Summoning it back to the field and drawing Triple Tactics Talent, while Nguyen used Detonator to destroy Rovero’s face-down TB-11. Nguyen then ended his turn.

Rovero drew Gold Sarcophagus for his turn! He started by Normal Summoning Dormouse, activating its effect and banishing White Rabbit from his Deck, then Special Summoned back the White Rabbit with its effect by paying 300 Life Points. He activated White Binder’s effect next, Setting Maliss <C> GWC-06 from his Graveyard. Next, he used Dormouse and White Rabbit to Link Summon Haggard Lizardose, used its effect to banish Dormouse from his Graveyard, then Special Summoned the Dormouse back as Nguyen activated Detonator’s effect to destroy Lizardose. Rovero then activated Triple Tactics Talent, taking control of Nguyen’s Ryzeal Detonator

Rovero used Dormouse to Link Summon Link Decoder, then used Link Decoder and White Binder to Link Summon Accesscode Talker! Realizing that his opponent’s Accesscode Talker could destroy his monsters and that Rovero still had other monsters he could summon out, Nguyen conceded the second Duel.

Anthony Rovero wins Round 2 and will advance with a 2-0 record here at YCS Anaheim with his Maliss Deck!
