Round 7 Feature Match: William Connor Wesley vs. Rennie Rendell Whitehead

We’re almost at the end of Day 1 here at YCS Anaheim! The players have been Dueling all day, and many are still hoping for the chance to make it to Day 2. William Connor Wesley and Rennie Rendell Whitehead each have a 5-1 record. They’ve each done well thus far, but will want to win the rest of their games in order to give them the best possible chances of making it to Day 2. The players are each using decks that have performed well at the top tables all day long, with Wesley using the new Maliss deck, while Whitehead is piloting the Fiendsmith Kashtira strategy. It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Wesley’s opening hand contained Maliss <P> Dormouse, Allure of Darkness, Mulcharmy Fuwalos, and two copies of Maliss in Underground

Whitehead chose to go first! He started by Special Summoning Kashtira Unicorn and activating its effect to add Kashtira Birth from his Deck to his hand. Next, he Normal Summoned Lacrima the Crimson Tears, sending Fiendsmith Engraver to the Graveyard with its effect. He used Lacrima to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem, then activated Requiem’s effect, and Wesley Chained the effect of Mulcharmy Fuwalos! Whitehead resolved Requiem’s effect, Special Summoning Engraver, and then activated Unicorn’s effect to banish Haggard Lizardose from Wesley’s Extra Deck face-down. Whitehead used Unicorn and Engraver to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Sequence, then activated Sequence’s effect to Fusion Summon Fiendsmith’s Desirae! He equipped Sequence to Desirae, then activated Kashtira Birth and ued its effect to Special Summon Unicorn from the Graveyard. He then Set a card to his back row and ended his turn. 

Wesley started his turn by activating Allure of Darkness, drawing 2 cards and banishing Maliss <P> White Rabbit from his hand. He then Special Summoned White Rabbit with its effect, but when he attempted to activate its effect on the field, Whitehead Chained the effect of Ghost Mourner & Moonlit Chill! He also used Unicorn’s effect to banish Wesley’s Splash Mage from the Extra Deck face-down. Wesley activated Triple Tactics Talent, revealing the only card in Whitehead’s hand as Lacrima and returned it to the Deck. Wesley used White Rabbit to Link Summon Linguriboh, then Special Summoned Code of Soul from his hand, then used the two monsters to Link Summon S:P Little Knight! He activated S:P’s effect, banishing Whitehead’s face-down Fiendsmith in Paradise. Wesley activated Maliss in Underground! Whitehead Chained the effect of Desirae, but Wesley Chained Book of Eclipse, flipping Desirae face-down and removing the cards equipped to it so that it could not negate Underground. On resolution, Wesley used Underground to banish Maliss <P> Chessy Cat, Special Summoned it with its effect, and then activated Chessy Cat’s on-field effect to banish another copy of Underground from his hand to draw 2 cards. 

Wesley followed up by Normal Summoning Maliss <P> Dormouse, then used S:P and Dormouse to Link Summon Maliss <Q> White Binder! He activated White Binder’s effect, banishing Engraver and Sequence from Whitehead’s Graveyard as well as his own Dormouse, then Special Summoned back Dormouse with its effect. He activated White Binder’s other effect, Setting Maliss <C> GWC-06 to his back row, then used White Binder and Dormouse to Link Summon Firewall Dragon! He then activated the effect of Bystial Druiswurm in his hand, banishing White Binder to summon it. He Special Summoned back White Binder wiith its effect and drew Dotscaper. He activated Firewall’s effect to return Desirae to the Extra Deck, then used White Binder, Firewall, and Chessy Cat to Link Summon Firewall Dragon Darkfluid – Neo Tempest Terahertz! He entered the Battle Phase, used Terahertz to attack Unicorn, and sent Cyberse Desavewurm to the Graveyard by using Terahertz’s effect. He ended his turn. 

Whitehead started by activating Kashtira Birth’s effect to try Special Summoning Unicorn, but Wesley banished Cyberse Desavewurm from the Graveyard to negate Birth’s effect! Whitehead then Normal Summoned Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, and used it to Xyz Summon Super Starslayer TY-PHON – Sky Crisis. Wesley activated Maliss <C> GWC-06 to Special Summon White Binder, banishing Whitehead’s Engraver while banishing and Special Summoning his own Dormouse and White Rabbit. Wesley used White Rabbit to Set Maliss <C> TB-11, then activated the effect of Code of Soul in his Graveyard, banishing it to Link Summon Maliss <Q> Hearts Crypter by using White Rabbit, Chessy Cat, and Druiswurm as Link Materials. He used Druiswurm’s effect to send TY-PHON to the Graveyard. With no follow up plays, Whitehead conceded.

Duel 2

Whitehead started Duel 2 by Special Summoning Kashtira Unicorn and using its effect to add Kashtira Birth from his Deck to his hand! He activated Birth, then Normal Summoned Kashtira Fenrir, activating its effect to add another copy of Fenrir from his Deck to his hand. He used Fenrir and Unicorn to Link Summon Moon of the Closed Heaven, used Moon to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem, then activated Requiem’s effect, Special Summoning Lacrima the Crimson Tears from the Deck and sending Fiendsmith Engraver to the Graveyard. He equipped Requiem to Lacrima, then used Lacrima to Special Summon Necroquip Princess. He activated the effect of Engraver in his Graveyard to Special Summon it, used Necroquip and Engraver to Xyz Summon D/D/D Wave High King Caesar, used Kashtira Birth to Special Summon Kashtira Unicorn, and ended his turn. 

Wesley opened with Triple Tactics Thrust, Harpie’s Feather Duster, Allure of Darkness, and two copies of Maliss <P> Chessy Cat, then drew Maliss <C> GWC-06 for his turn! He started by activating Allure of Darkness, drawing Dimension Shifter and Maliss <P> White Rabbit and then banished Dimension Shifter. Here, Whitehead activated the effect of Lacrima in the Graveyard, returning it to the Deck to Special Summon back Requiem, then activated Requiem to Special Summon back Lacrima and send Fiendsmith in Paradise to the Graveyard. Wesley activated Triple Tactics Thrust, adding Triple Tactics Talent from his Deck to his hand, then activated Talent to take control of Whitehead’s Caesar! He followed it up with Harpie’s Feather Duster, destroying Whitehead’s Kashtira Birth

Next, Wesley Set a card to his back row, and then Normal Summoned Maliss <P> Chessy Cat. He activated its effect, and Whitehead Chained the effect of Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy it! Wesley banished Maliss <P> White Rabbit from his hand and drew 2 cards, while Whitehead activated Unicorn’s effect to banish Wesley’s Maliss <Q> White Binder face-down from the Extra Deck. Next, Wesley Special Summoned back the White Rabbit and used its effect to Set Maliss <C> TB-11 from the Deck. He proceeded to the Battle Phase, and used Caesar to attack Whitehead’s Kashtira Unicorn. In Main Phase 2, he used Caesar and White Rabbit to Link Summon S:P Little Knight, banishing Fiendsmith Engraver from Whitehead’s Graveyard. Whitehead banished Fiendsmith in Paradise from his Graveyard, sending Fiendsmith’s Desirae from the Extra Deck to the Graveyard! He activated Desirae’s effect, attempting to send S:P to the Graveyard, but Wesley Chained S:P’s effect and banished S:P and Lacrima. He Set a card to his back row and ended his turn, returning the S:P Little Knight and Lacrima to his field. 

Whitehead started by using Lacrima the Crimson Tears to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem, then activated Requiem’s effect to Special Summon another Lacrima from the Deck. However, Wesley activated Infinite Impermanence to negate the Lacrima’s effect! Whitehead entered the Battle Phase, attacking S:P with Lacrima and sending Lacrima to the Graveyard, then in Main Phase 2, he Special Summoned Kashtira Fenrir, and activated its effect to add Kashtira Riseheart from his Deck to his hand. He Special Summoned Riseheart and activated its effect by banishing Kashtira Unicorn from the Deck. Wesley Chained S:P’s effect, banishing it and Fenrir until the End Phase. Whitehead activated Triple Tactics Talent to return Wesley’s Maliss <P> Chessy Cat from his hand to his Deck, leaving him with only Mulcharmy Fuwalos in hand! During the End Phase, Fenrir and S:P returned to their respective fields. Wesley also activated Maliss <C> TB-11, Special Summoning Maliss <P> Dormouse from his Deck. 


Wesley drew his own Triple Tactics Talent for turn! He activated the effect of the Dormouse he Summoned on the previous turn, banishing Maliss <P> White Rabbit from his Deck. Whitehead attempted to activate Fenrir’s effect to banish S:P, and Wesley Chained S:P’s effect to banish both it and Whitehead’s Fenrir! Wesley activated Triple Tactics Talent, returning Whitehead’s Effect Veiler from his hand back to the Deck. Wesley then Normal Summoned Mulcharmy Fuwalos, and Whitehead activated Lacrima’s effect, returning it to the Deck to Special Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem, then activated Requiem to Special Summon back Lacrima and send Fiendsmith Engraver to the Graveyard with Lacrima’s effect. Wesley used Fuwalos and Dormouse to Link Summon Haggard Lizardose, and used Lizardose’s effect to banish Dormouse. He Special Summoned back Dormouse with its own effect. He used Dormouse and Lizardose to Link Summon Maliss <Q> Red Ransom, and activated Ransom’s effect to add Maliss in Underground to his hand. He then used Ransom and White Rabbit to Link Summon Accesscode Talker! He activated Accesscode Talker’s effect, banishing Red Ransom to destroy Lacrima. He activated Red Ransom’s effect, Special Summoning back Red Ransom and banishing Dotscaper, then Special Summoned back Dotscaper as well! He activated Maliss in Underground to banish Chessy Cat from the Deck and Summon it, then used Dotscaper, Chessy Cat, and Ransom to Link Summon Maliss <Q> Hearts Crypter! He used Accesscode Talker’s effect once more, destroying Whitehead’s Riseheart, and attacked directly to reduce Whitehead’s Life Points to zero.

Wesley is able to escape Round 7 with a win and will move on with a 6-1 record! Meanwhile, Whitehead falls to 5-2. Both players still have the chance to make it to Day 2, but will need to play well for the remainder of the day in order to make it.
