Top 32 Feature Match: Michael Brandon Aviles vs. Paulo Roberto Goncalves da Silva

December 8th, 2024

Over 1400 Duelists are now down to only the Top 32! We’ve got Michael Aviles, a Los Angeles Duelist playing the new hotness, Ryzeal. He’s facing three-time YCS Champion and UDS winner Paulo Goncalves da Silva! Goncalves is the final Duelist using Azamina Snake-Eye Fiendsmith, the Deck that was dominating so recently.

Duel 1

Aviles won the dice roll and played first. He Special Summoned Ext Ryzeal, sending a Ryzeal Detonator to the Graveyard, and added Sword Ryzeal to his hand. He Special Summoned Sword to add Ice Ryzeal to his hand. Goncalves activated Mulcharmy Fuwalos here, now that Aviles had committed to the field. Aviles stacked his monsters for Ryzeal Detonator, letting Goncalves draw a card. Detonator attached the Graveyard Detonator as a material. Aviles then played Triple Tactics Talent, revealing Goncalves’s hand! He saw Nibiru, the Primal Being; Infinite Impermanence; Crossout Designator; Snake-Eyes Diabellstar, and Diabellstar the Black Witch – the Black Witch got shuffled away.

Aviles played Pot of Desires next, drawing two new cards. He Set one back row card.

Goncalves drew a new Fuwalos. He had absolutely nothing to get started, and immediately conceded!

Duel 2

Goncalves got to lead this time, with a hand of Fiendsmith Engraver, Divine Temple of the Snake-Eye, Deception of the Sinful Spoils, and two copies of Bonfire. He played Bonfire to put Snake-Eye Ash in his hand. He Normal Summoned it to find Snake-Eyes Poplar, and Special Summoned it. Poplar put Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye in his hand. He played Divine Temple to place Snake-Eyes Diabellstar in his back row. Then he used Ash’s effect, sending itself and Snake-Eyes Diabellstar to the Graveyard, and Aviles Chained Mulcharmy Fuwalos. Ash’s effect brought Snake-Eye Oak to the field. Oak revived Ash, and Goncalves used Ash and Poplar to Link Summon Moon of the Closed Heaven. Poplar placed Snake-Eyes Diabellstar in the back row. He used Moon to play Fiendsmith’s Requiem, then used Snake-Eyes Diabellstar’s effect to Special Summon itself and place Poplar in the back row. He used Oak’s effect, sending itself and Poplar to the Graveyard to Special Summon Snake-Eyes Flamberge Dragon.

Goncalves used Requiem’s effect to Special Summon Lacrima the Crimson Tears, and Aviles used Effect Veiler to negate it. Goncalves activated the effect of the Engraver in his hand, finding Fiendsmith’s Tract. He played that to find and discard his third Engraver. He equipped Requiem to Lacrima, then used both cards to play Necroquip Princess. He Special Summoned Engraver by returning Moon from the Graveyard to his Extra Deck, then stacked Necroquip and Engraver for D/D/D Wave High King Caesar! Next, he used Snake-Eyes Diabellstar and Flamberge to Link Summon I:P Masquerena. Flamberge brought Ash and Poplar back to the field. He used I:P Masquerena and Ash to Link Summon Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames, and Aviles had another Effect Veiler to negate its effect. Goncalves played Deception, Tributing Promethean Princess to put The Hallowed Azamina in his hand. He activated it, sending Deception to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon Azamina Mu Rcielago. Its effect put WANTED: Seeker of Sinful Spoils in his hand.

He played Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye, sending Divine Temple to the Graveyard, and Aviles Chained a second Mulcharmy Fuwalos! Goncalves Special Summoned Oak, then used it and Mu Rcielago to Link Summon Moon of the Closed Heaven. He returned The Hallowed Azamina to his hand by returning Mu Rcielago to the Extra Deck. He activated Hallowed, then Chained WANTED. He added Diabellstar the Black Witch to his hand, then sent WANTED to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon Azamina Illia Silvia. Goncalves pitched a Bonfire to Special Summon Diabellstar, which Set another WANTED on the field. He activated the effect of the WANTED in his Graveyard. Aviles had Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, but Goncalves negated it with Illia Silvia! He desperately wanted to draw a new card, and ironically drew his own Ash Blossom. He used Diabellstar and Moon to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Sequence, and it was no surprise that Aviles had drawn an Infinite Impermanence by now.

Goncalves finally passed the turn! Aviles had a whopping 16 cards in hand after his many Mulcharmy draws, and got to keep ten of them.

Aviles drew his card… and moved to the Battle Phase! Goncalves flipped WANTED to get Diabellstar the Black Witch and put his spell in the Graveyard before a potential Evenly Matched. Aviles did indeed have Evenly Matched, and Goncalves chose to banish Caesar and Sequence face-down, keeping Poplar on the field so his Promethean Princess in the Graveyard could still activate its effect. In Main Phase 2 Aviles Normal Summoned Ice Ryzeal. Goncalves Chained Lacrima’s effect in the Graveyard to Special Summon Requiem. Ice Special Summoned Sword from Aviles’s Deck, which put Ext Ryzeal in his hand. Goncalves used Requiem to Special Summon Engraver in Defense Position, doing this before he might bring back Promethean Princess and get locked into FIRE monsters. Aviles Special Summoned Ext by sending a Detonator to the Graveyard, and it added Node Ryzeal to his hand. He Special Summoned Node, then stacked it with Sword for Abyss Dweller in Defense Position. Goncalves responded to the Summon with his Promethean Princess, destroying Abyss Dweller and his own Poplar. Poplar’s effect put Snake-Eyes Diabellstar in his back row. Aviles used his remaining monsters to Xyz Summon Ryzeal Duo Drive, which attached Detonator from the Graveyard. He activated its effect, and Goncalves used his Ash Blossom to negate it. Aviles played Ryzeal Plugin to Special Summon Abyss Dweller and attached Ice Ryzeal to it! He used Bonfire next, finding another Ice. He Special Summoned it by sending an extra Evenly Matched to the Graveyard. Then he Special Summoned Sword from his hand, and Xyz Summoned Ryzeal Detonator! It attached an Ash Blossom as a material. Aviles Set two more cards in his back row to finish the turn.

Goncalves drew Fiendsmith’s Tract, and Aviles activated Abyss Dweller’s effect. Goncalves sent Promethean Princess to attack Abyss Dweller. In Main Phase 2 he activated Princess’s effect, and Aviles used Detonator to destroy Fiendsmith Engraver. Princess brought Flamberge back to the field. He activated Flamberge’s effect on Detonator, which responded by destroying the Flamberge. Detonator was sent to the back row, and Flamberge couldn’t activate its other effect due to Dweller’s active effect. Goncalves tried using the effect of Snake-Eyes Diabellstar, and Aviles had Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to destroy it! Goncalves Set Fiendsmith’s Tract.

Aviles used Duo Drive’s effect to find Ryzeal Cross and Sword Ryzeal. He played Cross and used it to recycle two Ryzeals, drawing a card. He Special Summoned Ext, sending Mereologic Aggregator to the Graveyard, using neither of their effects. He Special Summoned Sword and added another Ext to the hand. He used both monsters to Xyz Summon a new Ryzeal Detonator, attaching Aggregator to it. Detonator ran over Promethean Princess, and Duo Drive attacked directly. In Main Phase 2 he flipped up Pot of Desires, and Paulo had had enough – he offered the handshake!

Michael Aviles is headed to the Top 16 with Ryzeal!
