Round 5 Feature Match: Justin Ly vs. Thomas Ruetch
Justin Ly from Virginia Beach, Virginia and Thomas Ruetch from Hamilton, Ontario are both 4-0 at YCS Orlando. Now, they’re Dueling against one another in a Match that pits Justin’s Tenpai Dragon Deck against Thomas’s Ryzeal Deck. Tenpai Dragon Decks took a big hit on the latest Forbidden & Limited List for the Advanced Format, but Duelists continue to succeed in tournaments using the strategy. Now, Justin Ly is trying to prove that Tenpai Dragon Decks are still a top contender, and he’s hoping to secure success with the Tenpai Dragon strategy by combining it with the Kashtira theme. It’s time to Duel!

In his Draw Phase, Ly activated the effect of Dimension Shifter. Ruetch Normal Summoned Ext Ryzeal and activated its effect, adding Sword Ryzeal from his Deck to his hand. He activated Pot of Desires next by banishing the top 10 cards of his Deck face-down, but lost out to Ly’s Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Ruetch Set a card to his back row and then ended his turn.
Ly drew Kashtira Fenrir for his turn and added it to his hand of Kashtira Birth and Effect Veiler. He Special Summoned Fenrir and activated its effect to add Kashtira Riseheart from his Deck to his hand. He Normal Summoned Riseheart and activated its effect by banishing another Fenrir from his Deck. Ruetch Chained the effect of Detonator, destroying Fenrir, and then Riseheart banished the top 3 cards of Ruetch’s Deck face-down. He activated Birth, it was destroyed by Detonator, and then Ly promptly conceded with only Riseheart on his field and Effect Veiler in his hand.

Ly chose to go first in Duel 2 and opened up with Dimension Shifter, Kashtira Birth, Sangen Kaimen, Pot of Prosperity, and Dominus Impulse.
He activated the effect of Dimension Shifter in his Main Phase and then activated Pot of Prosperity by banishing 6 cards from his Extra Deck face-down. He excavated Forbidden Chalice, Tenpai Dragon Genroku, Kashtiratheosis, Infinite Impermanence, Dominus Impulse, and Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring from the top of his Deck, and chose to add the Genroku to his hand. He activated its effect to Special Summon it to his field and then Tributed it Special Summon Tenpai Dragon Paidra from his Deck. He used Paidra’s effect to add Sangen Summoning from his Deck to his hand and then activated it. He used Sangen Summoning’s effect to add another Paidra from his Deck to his hand and then discard Kashtira Birth. Ruetch entered his Battle Phase and attacked Hieratic Seal with Ice, and Ly activated the Hieratic Seal’s effect to return Ice to Ruetch’s hand. Next, he used the Seal’s other effect to Special Summon Bystial Magnamhut from his Deck and activate its effect. He used Magnamhut’s effect to add Tenpai Dragon Genroku from his Deck to his hand in the End Phase. He activated its effect to Special Summon it, and Ruetch Chained the effect of Mulcharmy Purulia to draw a card.
Ly drew Infinite Impermanence and Ruetch activated the effect of another Purulia in the Draw Phase. Ly Normal Summoned Paidra, allowing Ruetch to draw a card, and then switched Magnamhut into Attack Position. He attacked directly with Magnamhut and Genroku for 0 points of damage on each attack, and then attacked directly with Paidra to inflict 1700 points of damage. He activated Genroku’s effect by Tributing it next, and Ruetch Chained Infinite Impermanence to negate Paidra’s effect so that it couldn’t use its effect to Synchro Summon. Ly Special Summoned Fadra and used Fadra’s effect to Special Summon Genroku back from the Graveyard. Fadra attacked directly, dropping Ruetch down to 4700 Life Points. He combined Ext with Sword to Xyz Summon Ryzeal Detonator and used its effect to attach the Aggregator in his Graveyard to it as an Xyz Material. He Normal Summoned Ice Ryzeal next and used its effect to Special Summon Node Ryzeal from his Deck. He combined Ice with Node to Xyz Summon Ryzeal Duo Drive and activated its effect. Ly Chained Infinite Impermanence targeting Duo Drive, and Ruetch Chained the effect of his Detonator to destroy the Duo Drive so that its effect would resolve. He detached an Xyz Material from Detonator to resolve Duo Drive’s effect and add Sword Ryzeal and Ryzeal Plugin from his Deck to his hand. He activated Plugin by targeting Node Ryzeal in his Graveyard and Ly Chained Genroku’s effect to Special Summon Paidra from his Deck. Plugin Special Summoned the Node and then attached a Ryzeal Cross from Ruetch’s Deck to his Detonator as an Xyz Material. Next, Ruetch used Node’s effect. He sent Effect Veiler from his hand to his Graveyard to Special Summon Sword Ryzeal and then combined Node with Sword to Xyz Summon Eclipse Twins. He detached an Xyz Material from Eclipse Twins so that it could attack twice, and then activated Triple Tactics Talent to take control of one of Ly’s monsters.
