Round 6 Feature Match: Spencer Culwell vs. David Flores
Spencer Culwell from Newport, Pennsylvania got third place at the Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and now he’s up against an Ultimate Duelist Series Invitational winner David Flores from Houston, Texas! David Flores has many YCS Top Cut finishes, and is hoping to add another one to his accolades this weekend. But Spencer Culwell – the best performing Gladiator Beast Duelist currently in the tournament – will be trying to stand in his way. Flores is using a Fiendsmith Ryzeal, and with both Duelists currently holding 3-1-1 record, they’ll need a victory in this Swiss Round to strengthen their shot at a Top Cut finish this weekend. It’s time to Duel!
Duel One
Culwell won the die roll and chose to go first. He opened up with Gladiator Beast Augustus, Gladiator Beast Equeste, Triple Tactics Thrust, and 2 copies of Infinite Impermanence. With no way to get 2 monsters on the field, he passed his turn.
Flores Normal Summoned Ice Ryzeal and activated its effect, but lost out to Culwell’s Infinite Impermanence. Next he Special Summon Ext Ryzeal from his hand by sending Detonator to his Graveyard and used its effect to add Sword Ryzeal from his Deck to his hand. He combined Ice with Ext to Xyz Summon Ryzeal Duo Drive and attached a Detonator from his Graveyard to his Duo Drive with its effect. He activated its effect, but lost out to Infinite Impermanence. Flores Set 2 cards to his back row and then ended his turn.
Culwell drew Gladiator Proving Ground! He added Gladiator Beast Gistel to his hand and then activated its effect to Special Summon it along with the Augustus in his hand. He activated Gistel’s effect as Chain Link 1 and Augustus’s effect as Chain Link 2. Flores activated 2 copies of Infinite Impermanence to negate both monsters’ effects and then Culwell sent them to the Graveyard to Link Summon Test Panther. He used Panther’s effect to add Gladiator Beast’s Comeback from his Deck to his hand and then Normal Summoned Equeste. He used Panther’s effect to return Equeste to his Deck and Special Summon Attorix. He used Attorix’s effect to send Gladiator Beast Vespasius from his Deck to his Graveyard and changed Attorix’s Level to 7. He activated Gladiator Beast’s Comeback next, but mistakenly played it in a column that Infinite Impermanence was previously activated in! His Comeback was negated! He next sent Attorix and Panther to the Graveyard to Link Summon Gladiator Beast Dareios and used Dareios’s effect to Special Summon Equeste from his Deck. He sent his 2 monsters to the Graveyard to Link Summon Gladiator Beast Dragases and then returned Dareios, Vespasius, Gistel, Attorix, and Equeste from his Graveyard to his Deck to Special Summon Gladiator Beast Claudius from his Extra Deck! He used its effect to gain an additional Battle Phase and then entered his Battle Phase! He attacked Duo Drive with Claudius to destroy it and then attacked directly with Dragases to drop Flores down to 5400 Life Points. He returned Dragases to his Extra Deck at the end of the first Battle Phase and Special Summoned Vespasius and Gladiator Beast Bestiari from his Deck. In the second Battle Phase, direct attacks with Bestiari, Vespasius, and Claudius wiped out all of Flores’s Life Points!
Spencer Culwell takes a decisive victory with his Gladiator Beasts in Duel 1, even after his Gladiator Beast’s Comeback is negated by Infinite Impermanence’s effect! Flores chose to go first in Duel 2!
Duel Two
Flores started off Duel 2 by Normal Summoning Ice Ryzeal and activated its effect to Special Summon Ext Ryzeal from his Deck.
He used Ext Ryzeal’s effect to add Sword Ryzeal from his Deck to his hand and then combined Ext with Ice to Xyz Summon Evilswarm Exciton Knight. He sent it to the Graveyard to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem and Tributed the Requiem to Special Summon Lacrima the Crimson Tears from his Deck. He used Lacrima’s effect to send Fiendsmith in Paradise from his Deck to his Graveyard and then used Requiem’s effect to attach it to his Lacrima. He sent Requiem and Lacrima to the Graveyard to Special Summon Necroquip Princess and then activated the effect of Fiendsmith Engraver in his hand to add Fiendsmith’s Tract from his Deck to his hand. He used Necroquip Princess’s effect to draw a card. Next, he returned Evilswarm Exciton Knight from his Graveyard to his Extra Deck to Special Summon the Engraver from his Graveyard and Xyz Summoned D/D/D Wave High King Caesar. He Special Summoned Sword Ryzeal from his hand next, and used its effect to add Ext Ryzeal from his Deck to his hand. He Special Summoned it by sending Eclipse Twins from his Extra Deck to his Graveyard and then activated Ryzeal Cross. Culwell Chained Magnamhut’s effect, banishing Eclipse Twins to Special Summon it, and then activated the effect of Magnamhut on the field. Flores Xyz Summoned Duo Drive next, and used its effect to gain an Xyz Material. He then used its other effect to add Node Ryzeal and Ext Ryzeal to his hand. He used Bonfire to add Ice Ryzeal to his hand next. He Special Summoned Node from his hand and then used its effect by sending Ext from his hand to his Graveyard. He Special Summoned Sword and then used his Ryzeal Cross to return 2 copies of Ext from his Graveyard to his Deck and draw a card. Next, he combined Node and Sword to Xyz Summon Ryzeal Detonator. He used its effect to attach Ice Ryzeal from his Graveyard to it as an Xyz Material and then he Set a card to his back row. In the End Phase, Culwell added Bystial Druiswurm from his Deck to his hand thanks to Magnamhut.
Culwell drew Gladiator Beast Gistel and added it to his hand of Bystial Druiswurm, Gladiator Beast Augustus, Triple Tactics Talent, Infinite Impermanence, and Test Bear. He activated the effect of Gistel to try to Special Summon Gistel and Augustus and Flores used Caesar’s effect to negate it and destroy Gistel by giving up an Xyz Material. Culwell activated Triple Tactics Talent next to try to take control of a monster, but Flores used Crossout Designator! He declared Triple Tactics Talent and banished a copy from his Deck to stop it! Next, Culwell activated the effect of the Druiswurm in his hand by targeting Flores’s Fiendsmith Engraver. Flores Chained the effect of Detonator to destroy Magnamhut, and then Druiswurm was Summoned to the field and Engraver was banished. Flores banished Fiendsmith in Paradise from his Graveyard and sent Fiendsmith’s Desirae from his Extra Deck to his Graveyard. He used Desirae’s effect to return Requiem to his Extra Deck and send Druiswurm to the Graveyard. Druiswurm’s effect activated, but Flores negated it with Ryzeal Cross by detaching an Xyz Material from Duo Drive. Next, Culwell activated the effect of Infinite Impermanence to negate Caesar’s effect. He Normal Summoned Test Bear next and activated its effect by Tributing it and returning Augustus from his hand to his Deck; but when Flores Chained Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate it, it was over.
With no cards on his field or in his hand, and staring down a field full of monsters, Culwell conceded.
David Flores wins the second Duel and pushes the Match to a third and final one!
Duel Three
Culwell opened up Duel 3 with Gladiator Proving Ground, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Gladiator Beast Charge, Flavian – Colosseum of the Gladiator Beasts, and Gladiator Beast’s Comeback. In the Draw Phase, Flores activated the effect of Mulcharmy Purulia from his hand, but Culwell Chained Ash Blossom to negate it. Culwell continued his turn by activating Gladiator Proving Ground and added Gladiator Beast Gistel from his Deck to his hand. Next, he activated Flavian and activated its effect by discarding Gladiator Beast Charge. He added Gladiator Beast Attorix from his Deck to his hand and then used Gistel’s effect in his hand to Special Summon it alongside Attorix. He activated the effects of Gistel and Attorix as Chain Link 1 and Chain Link 2 respectively. He sent Vespasius to the Graveyard with Attorix to copy its name and Level and then added Gladiator Beast’s Comeback from his Deck to his hand with Gistel. He activated a copy of Comeback, but lost out to Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, then activated his second copy to Special Summon Vespasius. He returned Vespasius and Attorix from his field to his Deck to Special Summon Gladiator Beast Tamer Editor and used its effect to Special Summon Gladiator Beast Domitianus. Next, he sent Gistel and Tamer Editor to the Graveyard to Link Summon Test Panther and used its effect to add Gistel from his Deck to his hand. He Normal Summoned it and then used the Panther’s effect to return it to his Deck and Special Summon Equeste. He used Equeste’s effect to return Comeback from his Graveyard to his hand and then activated the Comeback to Special Summon Tamer Editor again. He used its effect to Special Summon another Domitianus and then sent Equeste and Panther to the Graveyard to Link Summon Dareios. He used Dareios’s effect to Special Summon Equeste from his Graveyard and used Equeste’s effect to add Gladiator Beast Charge from his Graveyard to his hand. He sent Dareios and Tamer Editor from his field to his Graveyard to Link Summon another Dareios and then used both copies of Dareios to Link Summon Gladiator Beast Dragases. He returned all 4 Gladiator Beasts in his Graveyard – as well as the Dragases on his field – to his Deck to Special Summon Gladiator Beast Claudius from his Extra Deck. He activated its effect to gain an additional Battle Phase on his next turn. He Set the Charge and then passed his turn.
Flores activated the effect of Engraver to add Fiendsmith’s Tract to his hand and then used Tract to add Fabled Lurrie from his Deck to his hand and discard it. He used its effect to Special Summon it. He sent it to the Graveyard to Link Summon Requiem and then activated the effect of Engraver in his Graveyard by returning Lurrie from his Graveyard to his Deck. He Chained Requiem’s effect to Special Summon a Lacrima the Crimson Tears and Special Summoned Engraver from his Graveyard. Culwell activated Claudius’s effect in a new Chain to Special Summon Gladiator Beast Gyzarus and used his Gyzarus’s effect to destroy Lacrima and Engraver. Next, Flores Normal Summoned Ice and Special Summoned Sword. He combined them to Xyz Summon Detonator and used its effect to attach an extra Xyz Material to it.
Culwell drew a card and then went straight into his first Battle Phase of the turn. Domitianus attacked Detonator, and Flores used Detonator’s effect to protect it. Then the second Domitianus attacked and destroyed it. Direct attacks from Claudius and Gyzarus dropped Flores down to 900 Life Points. At the end of that Battle Phase he returned Gyzarus to his Deck to Special Summon Gistel and Equeste, using their effects to add Proving Ground and Comeback to his hand. Attacks from Culwell’s monsters in the second Battle Phase wiped out Flores’s remaining Life Points!
