Round 7 Feature Match: Steven Trifunoski vs. Mariano De Nicola
Welcome to Round 7! We’re here with our most recent YCS Champion, Steven Trifunoski! He won YCS Anaheim with Fiendsmith Ryzeal, and now he’s back with Mitsurugi Ryzeal! His opponent is Mariano De Nicola, who we just saw in our Round 4 Feature Match. This Match is some Toronto friendly fire, as these Duelists know each other from back home – but only one can walk away as the victor!
Duel 1
De Nicola won the roll and started with Maliss in Underground to banish Maliss <P> Dormouse. He paid 300 Life Points to Special Summon it. He used its effect to banish Maliss <P> White Rabbit, which Set Maliss <C> TB-11. He Normal Summoned Droll & Lock Bird, then used Dormouse to Link Summon Link Decoder. He used all his monsters to Link Summon Maliss <Q> Red Ransom. Its effect added a new copy of Maliss in Underground to his hand, and then he Special Summoned Link Decoder. He used Red Ransom and Link Decoder to Link Summon S:P Little Knight, using it to banish Red Ransom from his Graveyard. He paid 900 Life Points to Special Summon Red Ransom and banish Dotscaper from his Deck. He Special Summoned Dotscaper. He used S:P Little Knight and Red Ransom to Link Summon Maliss <Q> White Binder, targeting Dormouse with its effect to banish it from the Graveyard. After it resolved, Trifunoski activated Nibiru, the Primal Being! De Nicola Chained TB-11, banishing White Binder to Special Summon Maliss <P> Chessy Cat from his Deck. Nibiru resolved, Tributing everything and giving De Nicola a 1500/2400 Primal Being Token in Attack Position. De Nicola Set one card in his back row to finish.
Steven Trifunoski
Trifunoski had a hand of two copies of Mitsurugi Prayers, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, and Ext Ryzeal. He drew Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Saji. In the Draw Phase, he used Mitsurugi Prayers, Tributing Saji from his hand. He added Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi to his hand, then took 800 damage and Special Summoned Saji. Saji put Mitsurugi Ritual in his hand. He played Mitsurugi Ritual to Ritual Summon Ame no Murakumo from his hand, Tributing a Saji and a Mitsurugi no Mikoto, Kusanagi from his Deck. Ame no Murakumo and Kusanagi activated, and De Nicola responded with Infinite Impermanence on Ame no Murakumo. Trifunoski responded with Ame no Murakumo’s effect, forcing De Nicola to discard Maliss in Underground to make his effect resolve. Kusanagi put Mitsurugi Ritual back in Trifunoski’s hand, and he activated it to attempt a Ritual Summon from the Deck. De Nicola has Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate that one. Trifunoski continued by Special Summoning Ext Ryzeal, sending Ryzeal Detonator to the Graveyard. He used Ext and Saji to Xyz Summon Ryzeal Duo Drive, attaching Detonator to it. Duo Drive’s effect put Sword Ryzeal and Ryzeal Cross in his hand, and he played Cross. He Special Summoned Sword, adding Ice Ryzeal to his hand. He Normal Summoned Ice to Special Summon Node. He stacked Sword and Ice for Detonator, and he moved to the Battle Phase! He had more than enough ATK to wipe out De Nicola’s Life Points on the first turn!
Duel 2
De Nicola began this time by Normal Summoning Maliss <P> Chessy Cat. He used its effect, and Trifunoski responded with Mulcharmy Fuwalos. De Nicola responded with Called by the Grave, and Trifunoski responded to that with Mulcharmy Meowls! Meowls resolved, Fuwalos was negated, and Chessy Cat let De Nicola banish a Dormouse to draw two cards. He paid 300 Life Points to Special Summon Dormouse, and Trifunoski drew with his Mulcharmy effect. De Nicola Link Summoned I:P Masquerena, then Set one back row card.
Mariano De Nicola
Trifunoski started this time with Effect Veiler, another Meowls, and Ice Ryzeal. He had drawn a second Ice from Meowls, and then drew Mitsurugi Ritual for the turn. He Normal Summoned Ice and activated it to Special Summon Sword Ryzeal, which added Ext Ryzeal to his hand. De Nicola activated Bystial Druiswurm, banishing his own Dormouse to Special Summon it. He paid 300 Life Points to Special Summon Dormouse, then used I:P Masquerena’s effect with Druiswurm to Link Summon S:P Little Knight! Druiswurm sent Sword to the Graveyard, and Little Knight banished Ice. Trifunoski sent his spare Meowls to the Graveyard to Special Summon the second Ice, and sent it to attack over S:P Little Knight. In Main Phase 2, Trifunoski Special Summoned Ext Ryzeal by sending Mereologic Aggregator to the Graveyard. Ext put Node Ryzeal in his hand. He stacked Ext and Ice for King of the Feral Imps, and De Nicola activated Nibiru, the Primal Being! Trifunoski got a 3200/2300 Primal Being Token in Defense Position. Trifunoski continued by Special Summoning Node, using it to discard Effect Veiler and revive Sword. He Xyz Summoned a second King of the Feral Imps, and De Nicola had Solemn Strike!
De Nicola played Gold Sarcophagus! That was enough to get a concession from Trifunoski, knowing he wasn’t coming back after the last turn’s exchange.
Duel 3
Trifunoski started the final Duel with Ash, Ext, Artifact Sanctum, and two copies of Mitsurugi Ritual. He Special Summoned Ext Ryzeal by sending a Ryzeal Detonator to the Graveyard, and Ext put Sword Ryzeal in his hand. He Special Summoned Sword, which found Ice Ryzeal. He Xyz Summoned Ryzeal Duo Drive, which attached Detonator from the Graveyard. He tried using its effect, but De Nicola had Infinite Impermanence to negate it. Trifunoski Normal Summoned Ice Ryzeal, which Special Summoned an Ext from the Deck. He Xyz Summoned King of the Feral Imps, using its effect to add Futsu no Mitama no Mitsurugi to his hand. He played Mitsurugi Ritual to Tribute Saji and Kusanagi from the Deck and bring Futsu no Mitama to the field. He returned Saji to his hand, then added Mitsurugi Prayers to his hand. He played a second Mitsurugi Ritual, Tributing Futsu no Mitama to bring Ame no Murakumo no Mitsurugi from the Deck! Ame no Murakumo added another Prayers to his hand, and Futsu no Mitama returned to the field. He Set Prayers and Artifact Sanctum.
In De Nicola’s Draw Phase, Trifunoski flipped Sanctum to Special Summon Artifact Lancea! He activated Lancea to shut down De Nicola’s Maliss cards, and De Nicola offered the handshake!
