Top 32 Feature Match: Derek Mead vs. David Golightly
Derek Mead from Prescott Valley, Arizona and David Golightly from Burmingham, Alabama have both made it to the Top Cut of a YCS once before, and on their second visit to the Top Cut here in Orlando, they’re after the trophy. Derek is the last-remaining Tenpai Dragon Duelist in the tournament, while David is the only Duelist left using a Fiendsmith Kashtira Deck. Derek is using Sky Striker cards to support the Tenpai Dragon theme in his Deck, and so far his bold Deck choice has served him well in the tournament. Now, one of these Duelists will advance for the Top 16. The other will be eliminated. It’s time to Duel!
Duel One
Mead won the die roll but chose to go second.
Golightly started off the Match by activating the effect of Fiendsmith Engraver in his hand.
He discarded it to add Fiendsmith’s Tract from his Deck to his hand then used the Tract to add Fabled Lurrie from his Deck to his hand. He discarded it and then used its effect to Special Summon it to the field. Next, he used Lurrie to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Requiem. He Tributed it to Special Summon Lacrima the Crimson Tears from his Deck with its effect and then used Lacrima’s effect to send another Engraver from his Deck to his Graveyard. Next, he returned Lurrie from his Graveyard to his Deck to Special Summon Engraver. He sent Engraver and Lacrima to the Graveyard to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Sequence and used its effect to return Engraver, Lacrima, and Requiem to his Deck and Special Summon Fiendsmith’s Desirae. He sent Desirae and Sequence to the Graveyard to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Agnumday. He Set 2 cards to his back row and then in the End Phase he used Agnumday’s effect to Special Summon Desirae and equip it with Agnumday.
Mead opened up with Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones, Triple Tactics Thrust, Called by the Grave, and 3 copies of Upstart Goblin. He activated the first Upstart Goblin to increase Golightly’s Life Points by 1000 and draw Triple Tactics Talent. He activated another Upstart Goblin to do it again, this time drawing Harpie’s Feather Duster. Finally, he played a third Upstart Goblin, bringing Golightly up to 11,000 Life Points and allowing him to draw Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! from his Deck! He activated Harpie’s Feather Duster, and Golightly used his Desirae’s effect to negate the Duster and his own Agnumday. Next, Mead activated Engage. He added Sky Striker Maneuver – Afterburners! from his Deck to his hand and then drew Metaltronus. Next, he activated the Talent to look at Golightly’s hand of Bystial Magnamhut and Bystial Druiswurm, and he returned the Magnamhut to Golightly’s Deck. He activated Thrust next, adding Lightning Storm from his Deck to his hand. He activated it to destroy the Agnumday, Infinite Impermanence, and Fiendsmith in Paradise in Golightly’s back row. Next, he activated Hornet Drones to Special Summon a Sky Striker Ace Token and used the Token to Link Summon Sky Striker Ace – Kagari. He used Kagari’s effect to return Hornet Drones to his hand and then activated it to Special Summon another Token. Golightly banished Fiendsmith in Paradise from his Graveyard to send a Desirae from his Extra Deck to his Graveyard, then used the Desirae’s effect. He returned Agnumday from his Graveyard to his Extra Deck and removed Mead’s Token from the field. Next, Mead activated Metaltronus targeting Desirae and Special Summoned Desirae from his Extra Deck. He Link Summoned Hiita the Fire Charmer, Ablaze by using Desirae and Kagari as Link Materials and then Golightly Special Summoned Druiswurm from his hand by banishing Mead’s Desirae from his Graveyard. Mead entered his Battle Phase and attacked Druiswurm with Hiita, causing the Hiita to be destroyed in battle. Mead used Hiita’s effect to add Tenpai Dragon Genroku from his Deck to his hand, then activated its effect to Special Summon it to his field. Finally seeing the winning part of Mead’s strategy, Golightly conceded. He realized that the Tenpai Dragon Genroku would snowball into Mead’s victory.

Duel Two
Golightly started off Duel 2 by Normal Summoning Lacrima and used its effect to send Fiendsmith Engraver to his Graveyard. He used Lacrima to Link Summon Requiem and then used Requiem’s effect to Tribute it and Special Summon Engraver from his Deck. He activated Requiem’s effect in the Graveyard to equip it to his Engraver. Next, he sent Requiem and Engraver to the Graveyard to Special Summon Necroquip Princess and then he activated the effect of an Engraver in his hand by discarding it. He added Fiendsmith’s Tract from his Deck to his hand and then drew a card with the effect of Necroquip Princess. He activated Tract and added Fabled Lurrie from his Deck to his hand. He discarded it, then used its effect to Special Summon it. Next, he Special Summoned an Engraver from his Graveyard and used Lurrie and Engraver as Link Materials to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Sequence. He used Sequence’s effect to return Lurrie, Engraver, and Requiem to his Deck and Summon Fiendsmith’s Desirae. Next, he sent Sequence and Desirae to the Graveyard to Link Summon Agnumday. He used its effect to Special Summon Engraver and then used Engraver and Necroquip to Xyz Summon D/D/D Wave High King Caesar in Defense Position. He Set 2 cards to his back row and then ended his turn.
Mead opened up Duel 2 with Book of Eclipse, Triple Tactics Talent, Book of Moon, Terraforming, and Tenpai Dragon Genroku.
He drew Tenpai Dragon Chundra and then Golightly used his Lacrima’s effect in the Graveyard to Special Summon Agnumday. He then used Agnumday’s effect to Special Summon Desirae in Defense Position, equipped with Agnumday. Mead activated Book of Eclipse and Golightly Chained Desirae’s effect to negate it. Mead Chained Book of Moon to put Desirae face-down. Book of Moon resolved to put Desirae face-down so that Agnumday would go the Graveyard, and then Book of Eclipse resolved to put the Caesar face-down too. Next, Mead activated Terraforming to add Sangen Summoning to his hand. He used Triple Tactics Talent to draw Tenpai Dragon Paidra and another Triple Tactics Talent next, and then Normal Summoned Paidra. He used Paidra’s effect to add Sangen Kaimen from his Deck to his hand. He Special Summoned Tenpai Dragon Chundra from his hand and then sent Paidra and Chundra to the Graveyard to Synchro Summon Sangenpai Bident Dragion. He activated its effect, but Golightly Chained Dimensional Barrier and declared “Synchro” to stop the Bident Dragion’s effect. Bident Dragion attacked and destroyed the face-down Caesar and then Mead activated Sangen Kaimen to add Tenpai Dragon Fadra from his Deck to his hand and Special Summon it. He used Fadra’s effect to Special Summon Chundra from his Graveyard and then entered Main Phase 2. He sent Chundra and Bident Dragion to his Graveyard to Link Summon Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres and then entered his End Phase. Desirae flipped face-up and Golightly drew a card. Next, Golightly flipped Fiendsmith in Paradise to send all cards on the field other than Desirae to the Graveyard! Mead instantly conceded, devastated by the Dimensional Barrier.

Duel Three
Golightly started off Duel 3 by Special Summoning Kashtira Unicorn from his hand. He used its effect to add Kashtira Birth from his Deck to his hand and then activated it. He Normal Summoned another Unicorn next and then used both monsters to Link Summon Moon of the Closed Heaven. He used Moon to Link Summon Requiem and then used Requiem to Special Summon Lacrima from his Deck. He used Lacrima’s effect to send Fiendsmith in Paradise from his Deck to his Graveyard and then equipped his Lacrima with Requiem. He sent Lacrima and Requiem to the Graveyard to Special Summon Necroquip Princess and then discarded Engraver from his hand to add Fiendsmith’s Tract from his deck to his hand. He used Necroquip’s effect to draw a card and then Special Summoned Engraver from his Graveyard by returning Moon of the Closed Heaven to his Extra Deck. He Xyz Summon D/D/D Wave High King Caesar next and then used Birth’s effect to Special Summon Unicorn back from his Graveyard. He Set a card to his back row and then ended his turn.
Mead opened up with Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage!, Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones, Book of Eclipse, Harpie’s Feather Duster, and Triple Tactics Talent. He drew Sky Striker Mecha – Widow Anchor for his turn and then activated Harpie’s Feather Duster in his Main Phase. He destroyed Kashtira Birth and a face-down Triple Tactics Talent. Next, he activated Book of Eclipse to put Caesar and Unicorn face-down. He activated Hornet Drones next to Special Summon a Token. Golightly banished Paradise from his Graveyard to send Desirae from his Extra Deck to his Graveyard, and then he used Desirae’s effect. He returned Requiem from his Graveyard to his Extra Deck and removed the Token from the field. Mead activated Engage next! He added Sky Striker Mecha – Widow Anchor from his Deck to his hand and then drew a card since he had 3 Spells in his Graveyard. He drew Genroku! He activated Triple Tactics Talent to look at Golightly’s hand, revealing Effect Veiler, Tract, and Engraver. He returned the Veiler to Golilghtly’s Deck and then Set 2 cards to his back row. He Normal Summoned Genroku and then entered his Battle Phase. He attacked with Genroku, then immediately Tributed it to Special Summon Tenpai Dragon Paidra from his Deck. He used Paidra’s effect to add Sangen Kaimen from his Deck to his hand and then activated it to add Tenpai Dragon Chundra from his Deck to his hand and Special Summon it. He attacked with Paidra, but then immediately used its effect to Tune it with Chundra. He Synchro Summoned Sangenpai Bident Dragion and used its effect to Special Summon Chundra from his Graveyard. Bident Dragion attacked Unicorn, and he used Chundra’s effect to Special Summon Fadra from his Deck, and then Fadra’s effect to Special Summon Paidra from his Graveyard. He destroyed the Unicorn in battle, then used Fadra’s effect to Synchro Summon Sangenpai Transcendent Dragion in his Battle Phase. He activated its effect to switch Caesar into Attack Position and then attacked it to destroy it in battle. Chundra and Paidra attacked directly next, and Golightly conceded, realizing the Duel would be over in mere moments.
