Round 9 Feature Match: Landon Oliver vs. Craig Hayashi
Welcome to Day 2 of TEAM YCS Las Vegas! We’re kicking things off with a Fiendsmith Ryzeal mirror Match – it’s Colorado Duelist Landon Oliver, facing California Duelist Craig Hayashi. Oliver is representing Team Leclowns, along with Jose Santiago Torres and Esala Wathuthantrige. Hayashi is here with Team BACK, alongside Kenneth Kuo and Brandon Wold. Between these two teams, we have innumerable YCS Top Cut finishes, WCQ Top Cuts, and World Championship appearances. It’s time to Duel!
Duel 1
Oliver had a hand of Mulcharmy Fuwalos, Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Ext Ryzeal, Bonfire, and Nibiru, the Primal Being. Hayashi won the dice roll and played first, leading with Fiendsmith Engraver’s effect to add Fiendsmith’s Tract to his hand. He played Tract to find and discard Fabled Lurrie. Lurrie hit the field, and he Link Summoned Fiendsmith’s Requiem. He activated Requiem, and Oliver responded with Fuwalos. Hayashi Special Summoned Lacrima the Crimson Tears, and Oliver drew Infinite Impermanence. Lacrima sent Fiendsmith in Paradise to the Graveyard. He Normal Summoned Ice Ryzeal, which Special Summoned Ext Ryzeal and allowed Oliver to draw Fiendsmith Engraver. Hayashi’s Ext put Sword Ryzeal in his hand. He stacked his Ryzeal cards for Ryzeal Detonator, and Oliver drew Ice. Detonator attached Reuiem as a material. Oliver activated Nibiru, giving Hayashi a 4200/3700 Primal Being Token and removing all that hard work.
Oliver drew Node Ryzeal. He Set Bonfire, perhaps bluffing a Maliss trap, then flipped it to add Ice to his hand. Hayashi had Droll & Lock Bird! Oliver Normal Summoned Ice, which Special Summoned Ext from the Deck. He used Ext and Nibiru to Link Summon Moon of the Closed Heaven; Hayashi activated Fiendsmith in Paradise, but Oliver used Ash Blossom to negate it. Oliver used Moon to Link Summon his own Requiem, which Special Summoned Lacrima. Lacrima sent Engraver to the Graveyard. He used Lacrima and Ice to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Sequence, which fused Engraver, Requiem, and Moon into Fiendsmith’s Desirae! He used Sequence and Desirae to Link Summon Fiendsmith’s Agnumday, then Desirae’s effect removed the Primal Being Token by returning Sequence to the Extra Deck. He Special Summoned Ext by sending Evilswarm Exciton Knight to the Graveyard, then Special Summoned Ice by sending Engraver from his hand to the Graveyard. He Xyz Summoned Ryzeal Detonator and attached an Ext to it as a material. He tried to exit his Main Phase, and Hayashi used the Graveyard effect of Lacrima to bring Requiem to the field. He then used Requiem to Special Summon an Engraver in Defense Position, protecting his Life Points. Oliver continued his Main Phase by Special Summoning Engraver, returning Exciton to the Extra Deck. He Special Summoned Node, then used it to send Engraver to the Graveyard and revive Ice. He stacked Node and Ice for another Detonator. Between the two Detonators, plus Agnumday and its effect to revive Desirae, there was enough ATK to end this Duel!
Duel 2
Oliver started the second Duel with two copies of Infinite Impermanence, Fuwalos, Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, and Lacrima. Hayashi began with Ice Ryzeal, and Oliver Chained Fuwalos. Ice brought Sword to Hayashi’s field, and Oliver drew Effect Veiler. Sword let Hayashi find another Ice. He Special Summoned Ext by sending Mereologic Aggregator to the Graveyard, and Ext put another Sword in his hand. He stacked all three monsters for Ryzeal Detonator, and Oliver drew Bonfire. Detonator attached Mereologic Aggregator as a material.
Oliver drew Nibiru. He began with Infinite Impermanence to negate Detonator, followed by Bonfire to get Ext. Hayashi had Droll & Lock Bird. Oliver Normal Summoned Lacrima and had it send Engraver to the Graveyard, then used Lacrima to Link Summon Requiem. He activated its effect to Special Summon Engraver. He activated Requiem’s effect to equip to Engraver, and Hayashi Chained his negated Detonator. The Detonator wouldn’t do anything, but the detached Mereologic Aggregator negated Oliver’s Engraver. Oliver used Engraver and Requiem to play Necroquip Princess, then revived Engraver by returning the other Engraver to the Deck. Hayashi had Nibiru! Oliver lost everything, but got a massive 6800/6900 Primal Being Token in Defense Position for his trouble. Oliver Set Infinite Impermanence and passed the turn.
Hayashi Normal Summoned Ice, which Special Summoned Ext. He used Ice and Nibiru to Link Summon Moon of the Closed Heaven, then that to Link Summon Requiem. Requiem Special Summoned Lacrima from the hand, and Oliver negated it with Infinite Impermanence. At this point, Jose Santiago Torres won his Match. With Oliver already ahead with a Duel win, things were looking good for Leclowns.
Hayashi continued the turn, using Ext and Lacrima to Xyz Summon Ryzeal Duo Drive, which attached Ice. He activated Duo Drive’s effect, but Oliver destroyed it with Ghost Ogre! With no Xyz Materials to detach, its effect couldn’t work. Hayashi Special Summoned Sword Ryzeal, then Special Summoned Ext by sending Eclipse Twins to the Graveyard. Ext found Node, and Oliver activated his own Nibiru! Once more, the field was replaced with a Primal Being Token. Before the turn’s end, Oliver revived Requiem with his Lacrima’s effect.
Oliver drew Ryzeal Cross. He used Requiem to Special Summon Lacrima, and had that send Engraver to the Graveyard. He used Lacrima and Nibiru to Link Summon Sequence, which fused Requiem and two Engravers into Desirae! He used Desirae to Link Summon Requiem, and had Requiem bring out Engraver. He equipped Requiem to Engraver, which used its effect to clear out the Primal Being Token. He then used Sequence and Engraver to Link Summon Agnumday. He played Cross, then consulted with Santiago Torres, certain he could win here and wanting to ensure it. He used Agnumday to revive Lacrima and equip to it. He Special Summoned Ext by sending Detonator to the Graveyard, and Ext put Sword in his hand. He Special Summoned Sword and added Ice to his hand. He used Sword and Ext to play Duo Drive, which attached Detonator as a material. He used Duo Drive to detach two materials, putting Node and Ice in his hand. He Normal Summoned Ice, which Special Summoned Sword. He stacked Ice and Sword for Detonator, attaching Necroquip to it. He Special Summoned Node, then revived Engraver by returning Requiem to the Extra Deck. Finally, he moved to the Battle Phase and attacked to end the Match!
