NAWCQ Round 12 Feature Match: Logan Patrick Johnson vs. Jeanpaul Alberto Perez Alonzo

For our Round 12 Feature Match, we have a Kewl Tune mirror match! Both Logan Patrick Johnson and Jeanpaul Alberto Perez Alonzo are playing the Kewl Tune Deck, a strategy that has proven to be very popular this weekend. It’s a Deck that requires Duelists to find a balance between bringing out powerful Synchro monsters and using cards from the hand to disrupt the opponent’s plays. Alonzo and Johnson each have 9-2 records, so they’ll have to continue winning to have a chance of making it to the Top Cut. It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Johnson won the die roll and chose to go first! He opened with Effect Veiler,Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, Dominus Purge, Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, and Kewl Tune Rotary. He activated the effect of Rotary, Normal Summoned it, then used it and Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit to Synchro Summon Kewl Tune Track Maker! Alonzo used the effect of Ghost Ogre to destroy Track Maker, as Johnson looked at his opponent’s hand of The Fallen & The Virtuous, Duelist Genesis, Kewl Tune Reco, and Fydraulis Harmonia then searched for Kewl Tune Cue and Kewl Tune Synchro. He Normal Summoned Cue and used its effect to Special Summon Kewl Tune Reco. Johnson activated the effect of Reco to search for Kewl Tune Mix, as Alonzo Chained the effect of Fydraulis Harmonia, Special Summoning Harmonia, destroying Kewl Tune Cue, and sending Wind Pegasus @Ignister to the Graveyard.

Johnson followed up by activating Kewl Tune Synchro and searching for JJ “Kewl Tune”, then activated it. He used his additional Normal Summon to bring out Mix and add Cue back to hand, then used Mix and Cue to Synchro Summon Kewl Tune Remix! He used the effect of Cue to banish Cue and return The Fallen & The Virtuous to the top of Alonzo’s Deck, noting that Alonzo already had one in his hand. Finally, he Set a card to his backrow and ended his turn.

Alonzo started his turn and proceeded directly to the Battle Phase! At the start of the Battle Phase, Johnson used the effect of Remix to Special Summon Kewl Tune Mix and add Kewl Tune Rotary back to hand, then used Reco and Rotary to Synchro Summon Kewl Tune Track Maker. He activated the effects of Mix and Track Maker to search for Kewl Tune Synchro and add Cue from his Graveyard back to hand, as well as the effect of Rotary to return Wind Pegasus to Alonzo’s Extra Deck. Alonzo then used Harmonia to attack Mix and proceeded to Main Phase 2. Here, Alonzo activated Duelist Genesis and searched for Kewl Tune Synchro. He then Normal Summoned Kewl Tune Reco, but Johnson Chained the effect of Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion! Alonzo followed up by activating Kewl Tune Synchro, but Johnson activated Dominus Purge as Chain Link 4, negating it. Alonzo proceeded to the End Phase and activated The Fallen & The Virtuous, sending Albion the Branded Dragon to the Graveyard to destroy Johnson’s Track Maker, then Set another copy of The Fallen & The Virtuous to his backrow before ending his turn.

Johnson drew Kewl Tune Mix for turn! He Normal Summoned Kewl Tune Cue, used its effect to Special Summon Track Maker back from the Graveyard, and searched for Kewl Tune Reco. He then used Track Maker and Reco to Synchro Summon Zalen the Shackled Dragon! He used Reco and Track Maker’s effects to destroy and return to hand the two copies of The Fallen & The Virtuous in Alonzo’s backrow. Finally, he Normal Summoned Kewl Tune Mix and added Reco back to hand, then used the two to Synchro Summon Kewl Tune RS. He used the effect of Mix to destroy Alonzo’s Harmonia. With no cards on the field and limited resources available, Alonzo conceded the first Duel.

Duel 2

Johnson opened with Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, two copies of Effect Veiler, and two copies of Kewl Tune Synchro.

Alonzo chose to go first! He Normal Summoned Kewl Tune Reco and activated its effect; Johnson activated the effect of Effect Veiler, and Alonzo Chained The Fallen & The Virtuous; Johnson activated the effect of his other Effect Veiler, but Alonzo activated Kewl Tune Synchro as Chain Link 5! Alonzo searched for Kewl Tune Rotary, then used Rotary and Reco to Synchro Summon Kewl Tune Track Maker and search for JJ “Kewl Tune” and another copy of Kewl Tune Synchro.

Alonzo used Track Maker and Kewl Tune Reco to Synchro Summon Zalen the Shackled Dragon, then activated Kewl Tune Synchro and searched for Kewl Tune Cue. He activated JJ, then Normal Summoned Cue and Special Summoned Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring from the Deck! He activated the effect of JJ, Tributing Ash and Special Summoning Kewl Tune Mix, then searched for another copy of Kewl Tune Reco. Finally, he used Cue and Mix to Synchro Summon Kewl Tune Remix, and used Cue’s effect to banish Cue and return Dominus Purge to the top of Johnson’s Deck, then Set a card to his backrow and ended his turn.

Johnson drew Dominus Purge for turn! During the Standby Phase, Alonzo activated the effect of Remix; Johnson Chained the effect of Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, but Alonzo used the effect of Zalen the Shackled Dragon! This allowed him to resolve Remix’s effect to Special Summon Kewl Tune Reco and add Mix back to hand. Johnson activated Kewl Tune Synchro, and Alonzo Chained the effect of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring; Johnson tried to activate his second copy of Kewl Tune Synchro, but Alonzo Chained Mannadium Reframing! Johnson conceded, and we’re moving on to game three.

Duel 3

Johnson chose to go first in the final Duel, and opened with Effect Veiler, Dominus Purge, Duelist Genesis, Kewl Tune Rotary, and Solemn Warning. He Normal Summoned Rotary, then activated Duelist Genesis. However, Alonzo could tell that this indicated Johnson didn’t have a strong opening hand, and Chained the effect of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring! Johnson Set two cards to his backrow and ended his turn.

Alonzo Normal Summoned Kewl Tune Reco, but Johnson activated Solemn Warning! Alonzo ended his turn without making any other plays.

Johnson drew Dominus Purge for turn! He turned Rotary to Defense Position, Set a card to his backrow, and ended his turn.

Alonzo drew for turn and Normal Summoned Kewl Tune Mix! This time, Johnson activated Dominus Purge. Since Johnson had Solemn Warning in his Graveyard, Mix was destroyed, and Alonzo ended his turn.

Johnson drew Kewl Tune Cue for turn! He Normal Summoned it and activated its effect, but Alonzo Chained the effect of Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Johnson then used Rotary and Cue to Synchro Summon Kewl Tune Track Maker! Alonzo activated Called by the Grave to negate the effect of Johnson’s Rotary, but Johnson was still able to use the effect of Track Maker to search for JJ “Kewl Tune”. He activated JJ, then used its effect to Tribute Track Maker, Special Summon Kewl Tune Reco, and search for Kewl Tune Mix. He Normal Summoned Mix and activated its effect, and with no way to defend his Life Points, Alonzo conceded.

Johnson wins the round and moves on with a 10-2 record, hopeful for the chance to make it to the Top 8 here at the North America WCQ!
