NAWCQ Round 7 Feature Match: Trevor Reid vs. Joseph Kaspar

Trevor Reid from Snohomish, Washington and Joseph Kaspar from Tempe, Arizona are both currently 5-1 in the North America WCQ. Reid is using an Invoked Deck, boosted by new support for Aleister the Invoker released in Chaos Origins. Kaspar, on the other hand, is using a Sky Striker Deck. Both Decks have been popular throughout the years, even though they use vastly different strategies. Invoked Decks primarily rely on Fusion Summoning, while Sky Striker Decks win through Link Summoning. Only one of these Duelists will advance with a 6-1 record at the end of this Swiss Round. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

Reid opened up Duel 1 with Magical Meltdown, 2 copies of Infinite Impermanence, and 2 copies of Aiwass, Divine Spirit of the Law.

He activated Magical Meltdown and used its effect to add Aleister the Invoker from his Deck to his hand. He Normal Summoned it and used its effect to add Invocation from his Deck to his hand. Next, he activated the effect of Aiwass in his hand by banishing it, and added Aleister the Reminiscent from his Deck to his hand. He activated the effect of Aleister the Reminiscent in his hand and Special Summoned it after giving Aleister the Invoker 1000 ATK. He then activated the Reminiscent’s on-field effect to add Invocation – “Sword” from his Deck to his hand by banishing Invoked Magistus Omega from his Extra Deck. Next, he sent Aleister the Invoker to the Graveyard to Link Summon Salamangreat Almiraj and then sent his 2 monsters to the Graveyard to Link Summon Aleister the Invoker of Madness. He activated Invocation next, and banished Almiraj and Aleister the Invoker from his Graveyard. He Special Summoned Invoked Sorath and used its effect to Special Summon Aleister the Reminiscent from his Graveyard. He sent Reminiscent and Sorath to the Graveyard to Link Summon Proxy F Magician and then used the effect of Sorath in the Graveyard to perform a Fusion Summon. He banished Sorath and the Reminiscent from his Graveyard to Fusion Summon Invoked Baybarron. He then activated the effects of Aleister the Invoker of Madness and Invoked Baybarron. He added Virakam, the Divine Spirit of Artifice to his hand with Baybarron’s effect and then used the Invoker of Madness’s effect to discard Aiwass and add Invocation from his Deck to his hand. He then used Proxy F Magician’s effect to fuse the Magician with Baybarron and Summon Invoked Elysium. Next, he activated the effect of Virakam in his hand to Special Summon it and then used Virakam’s effect to Set Invocation – “Sword” from his Deck to his field. He then used the effect of the Invocation in his Graveyard to return his banished Aleister the Invoker to his hand and shuffle the Invocation in his Graveyard back into his Deck. Next, he discarded Aleister the Invoker to activate its effect and increase Elysium’s ATK by 1000. He activated Invocation next, and banished Baybarron and Aleister the Invoker from his Graveyard to Special Summon Invoked Augoeides in Defense Position. He activated “Sword” next  and returned Baybarron, Sorath, and Invoked Magistus Omega from banishment to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon Hyperinvoked Aeon. He activated the Aeon’s effect and banished Baybarron and Sorath from his Graveyard before looking at Kaspar’s Extra Deck and banishing all 3 copies of Sky Striker Ace = Zero from it! He then used the effect of “Sword” in the Graveyard to return Invocation from his Graveyard to his hand and return the “Sword” to his Deck. He activated Invocation by banishing the Omega from his Graveyard and the Invoker of Madness on his field and Summoned Invoked Oceanus in Defense Position in the Extra Monster Zone. He Set both copies of Infinite Impermanence before ending his turn.

Kaspar drew a card and Reid activated Invocation – “Sword” during the Draw Phase. He returned Omega, Baybarron, and Sorath from banishment to his Graveyard to Summon another Hyperinvoked Aeon and used its effect to banish 3 copies of Sky Striker Ace – Kagari from Kaspar’s Extra Deck. With his best Link Monsters gone, Kaspar conceded.

Trevor Reid banishes all three copies of Kageri and all three copies of Sky Striker Ace = Zero from Kaspar’s Extra Deck, rendering him unable to fight through Reid’s opening field in Duel 1.

Duel Two

Kaspar started off Duel 2 by Normal Summoning Sky Striker Ace – Raye and activated its effect by Tributing it.

He Special Summoned Sky Striker Ace = Zero from his Extra Deck and used its effect to add Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! from his Deck to his hand. He activated it to add Sky Striker Airspace – Area Zero from his Deck to his hand and then activated it. He used its effect targeting Zero and excavated the top 3 cards of his Deck. He excavated Raye, Called by the Grave, and Sky Striker Special Maneuver – Lemnisgate! from his Deck and added the Lemnisgate to his hand before sending Zero to the Graveyard. Next, he activated Sky Striker Mobilize – Linkage!. He sent Area Zero to the Graveyard and Special Summoned Sky Striker Ace – Kagari from his Extra Deck. He activated the effects of Kagari and Area Zero. He Special Summoned Sky Striker Ace – Roze from his Deck with Area Zero’s effect and returned Engage from his Graveyard to his hand with Kagari’s effect. He sent his 2 monsters to the Graveyard to Link Summon Sky Striker Ace – Camellia and then activated its effect to send Lemnisgate from his Deck to his Graveyard. He activated Engage from his hand next, allowing him to add Linkage from his Deck to his hand and draw a card. He sent Camellia to the Graveyard to Link Summon Sky Striker Ace – Shizuku and then Set 5 cards to his back row. In the End Phase, he used Shizuku’s effect to add Sky Striker Mecha – Hornet Drones from his Deck to his hand.

Reid drew Invocation and added it to his hand of Sacred Spirit Sword Aiwass, 2 copies of Aleister the Invoker, and 2 copies of Aiwass, Divine Spirit of the Law. He Normal Summoned Aleister the Invoker and activated its effect, but lost out to Sky Striker Mecha – Widow Anchor, which targeted Aleister to negate its effect. He then Chained Linkage and sent Shizuku to the Graveyard to Special Summon Zero to the Extra Monster Zone. Kaspa took control of Aleister with Widow Anchor until the End Phase after negating its effect. Next, Reid banished Aiwass from his hand to activate its effect and add Aleister the Reminiscent from his Deck to his hand. Reid activated his Reminiscent’s effect and Special Summoned it to his field by giving the Aleister on Kaspar’s field 1000 ATK. He activated Invocation and banished Raye from Kaspar’s Graveyard along with the Reminiscent from his field. He Fusion Summoned Invoked Oceanus in his Main Monster Zone.  He activated Sacred Spirit Sword Aiwass next, and used its effect to Special Summon Aiwass, Divine Spirit of the Law from his Deck in Attack Position. He thought for a moment and finally conceded, realizing there was no way for him to win.

The Match is going to a third and final Duel!

Duel Three

Reid opened up Duel 3 with Solemn Judgment, Magical Meltdown, Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion, Alister the Reminiscent, and Aiwass, Divine Spirit of the Law. He activated Magical Meltdown and used its effect to add Aleister the Invoker from his Deck to his hand, prompting Kaspar to activate the effect of Droll & Lock Bird from his hand! The Droll & Lock Bird’s effect left him virtually unable to make any effective plays! He Set the Solemn Judgment and then ended his turn.

Kaspar activated Radiant Typhoon Vision in the Draw Phase to draw 2 cards and then discard Widow Anchor. While still in the Draw Phase, he activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Reid’s face-down Solemn Judgment. In the Main Phase, he activated Sky Striker Mobilize – Engage! and used its effect to add Raye from his Deck to his hand and draw a card. He Normal Summoned Raye and entered his Battle Phase. He attacked directly with Raye to drop Reid down 6500 Life Points, then he Tributed Raye to Special Summon Sky Striker Ace = Zero from his Extra Deck. He activated its effect to try to add a Spell from his Deck or Graveyard to his hand, but lost out to Reid’s Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion. Next, he attacked directly with Zero. He activated Linkage from his hand and sent Zero to the Graveyard to Special Summon Kagari to the Extra Monster Zone! Since he had a LIGHT and DARK “Sky Striker Ace” monster in his Graveyard, it was Summoned with an extra 1000 ATK. He used Kagari’s effect to return Linkage from his Graveyard to his hand, then attacked directly with Kagari to inflict 2900 points of damage and drop Reid down to 1600 Life Points. Kaspar activated Linkage once again, sending Kagari to the Graveyard to Special Summon Shizuku with 2500 ATK. A direct attack from Shizuku wiped out the rest of Reid’s Life Points!

Joseph Kaspar is moving into Round 8 with a 6-1 record!
