Genesys BIG 1st Anniversary Update!

It’s been an eventful year, hasn’t it? About year ago we announced the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Genesys format and about 2 weeks later the first Invitationals were held at YCS Anaheim. The format has come a long way in a year, going from public events and Invitationals to full blown Regional and YCS events and its own end-of-season Championship! It’s been a lot of fun so far, but the fun has just begun!

This latest point list involves hundreds of changes and you can find the full list below. It’s not feasible to go over every single change or even every single individual category of changes in this post, but we’ll do our best to hit the highlights at the end and explain overall what’s happened in broad terms in this update. If there are particular changes you really do (or don’t) like or just find interesting, make sure to use #YGOGenesys when you’re talking about it. If you want to look under the hood before seeing the point list, skip down to the very end. Here are the updates!

Name Your Price!
Aside from the few 100-point builds that a couple people bring to each event, the threshold for what the general public is willing to spend to use a single power card is about 40 points. If it’s the best of the best at its position, like Maxx “C”, then they’ll pay 50, but generally 40 is the max, and we see people pay it regularly for cards like Branded Fusion, Graceful Charity (in the beginning anyway, its usage has fallen to 0 since the switch from Invitationals to YCS), Kewl Tune Rotary, and Mind Shuffle.

Generally, you’ll play 1 copy of 1 of these cards, and then you’ll have ways to add it from your Deck to your hand. Given this pattern of behavior, we’ve adjusted the base points of a lot of cards that fall into this category down to 40. This also includes Extra Deck monsters like Chaos Ruler, the Chaotic Magical Dragon and The Zombie Vampire. That combination would previously have eaten your entire salary cap, but now you can run them together and still have some room left over.

There are a lot of cards in this category, so we’re hoping everyone will find something they do like even though you surely won’t like every card that was reduced.

Grave(yard) Issues
We’ve been pretty strict with Foolish Burial-type effects and things that send the top however many cards of your Deck to the GY because allowing the Graveyards to pile up quickly and unnaturally ratchets up the moment-to-moment complexity of the game and drags the pace of Duels to a halt. It’s doubly so in Genesys where there’s a fair chance you’ve never even seen some of the cards going to the Graveyard and it’ll take longer to figure out what they do.

Despite this, players constantly advocate for more Graveyard dumping, not less, and we’re willing to acquiesce at least a little bit as part of the anniversary rebalance. We’re drawing the line at Tearlaments though. No Deck in history has caused more unreadable game states and matches grinding to a halt than that one.

The Search for Search
We gave a preview of the anniversary update back at the end of July with the rebalance of several search Spells. This was a small part of a larger project to re-evaluate the base point cost of different categories of searchers and the various factors that result in increases or decreases. The biggest winner of that change was Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye, which immediately brought Fire Kings back into the format.

We’ve reevaluated the existing categories of search cards and even added a couple more. For example, when the initial points list was being created we didn’t create a category for “search 3” cards. There was just Block Dragon, Bujinunity, Hysteric Sign, and Subsurface Stage Divers, and Block Dragon was the clear outlier of the bunch.

In all cases where a card’s point cost was going to be increased due to performance but also because of an overall rebalance, only the higher of the 2 values was applied – the card was not increased twice.  For example, Sacred Beasts Released was in line for a performance bonus, but the categorization of “Search 3” base value was higher and it had no mitigating factors that would have lowered it, so we only used the new category value. “Search 4” currently only consists of Spellbook of the Grand Circle and Melffy Footsteps. As such, you’ll probably be waiting a while to find out what the base value for “Search 4” is.

Negates
These have undergone a restructuring of their base values. The top omni-negates from the Extra Deck, Baronne de Fleur and Varudras, the Final Bringer of the End Times, are now at 50. The others fall in beneath them based on the limitations of what they negate, when they can negate, what their materials are, any costs required, theme specificity, etc. Effects that change other effects are also considered part of this category. Phantom of Yubel is now treated as an honorary Link Monster, not just a negation body.

Old School
A number of older themes have had ALL of their cards removed from the list completely, including ABC, True Draco, Ritual Beast, Star Seraphs, Subterror, Dragonmaid, and the Dragon Rulers.

There Were Data Based Adjustments Too!
Last but not least, we made changes based on the last 2 months of gameplay. Some of the changes we would have made were superseded by other categories above, like in the Sacred Beasts Released example or with the Exosister cards that gained points (in other words, Exosisters’ points went up because of this recategorization of effects, not because of Exosisters’ performance data). We’re holding off on Pair Bear Scare!! for now until we’ve seen what people decide to play under this new list, and yes, Skull Meister did indeed get the 1 point (for the same reason that D.D. Crow did previously – it was an auto-include in most Decks and 0-point auto-includes can reduce Deck diversity and Deck-building intricacy; it’s more interesting when we have the 0-point Mystical Space Typhoon vs. 1-point Cosmic Cyclone dynamic, like we mentioned in the previous article). Do not be shocked if Skull Meister is still the most played card in the format. (We certainly won’t be.)

There are over 300 point changes here to start off the 2nd full year of Genesys. While it’s almost guaranteed you won’t like them all (especially the ones that benefit your rivals) we hope you’ll find a lot that you do like, and inspiration to try out a lot of different Deck ideas! And as always, if there’s something you want to share with the world, make sure to use #YGOGenesys when you post about it!

The next point update is planned to be the initial point update for Magnificent Maestros (MAMS). You probably don’t need to be a mind reader to guess what’s going to happen then.
