It’s Day 1 of Genesys Format here at YCS Montréal! Duelists will be competing throughout the day today, hoping to make it to Day 2 on Sunday. In this round’s Feature Match, we have Mackey Chung piloting the Blitzclique strategy, facing off against Stephen Thomas Calusic and his Dragonmaid Deck! Blitzclique proved to be one of the most dominant strategies at the Genesys Championship, but with several cards having points assigned to them recently, will they still be able to dominate this weekend? Let’s find out! It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Chung won the die roll and chose to go first, opening with Whisker Blitzclique, Blitzclique – Breakaway, D.D. Crow, and two copies of Hideout in the Sky, Coulomb. He started by activating Blitzclique – Breakaway in the Draw Phase, placing Blitzclique Alternator to his backrow, then used its effect to return Whisker to the Deck and search for Surge Blitzclique. He Normal Summoned Surge, then activated Coulomb, using its effect to Special Summon a Token to Calusic’s side of the field as he searched for Grain Blitzclique. Next, Chung activated the effect of Grain, destroying his Coulomb and Special Summoning it, then used Surge’s effect to search for Whisker Blitzclique as Calusic used the effect of D.D. Crow to banish Breakaway! Chung Special Summoned Whisker and destroyed the Token on Calusic’s side of the field, then searched for another copy of Breakaway and added Coulomb from the Graveyard back to hand. Finally, he activated Coulomb once again, Set a card to his backrow, and ended his turn.

Calusic started in the Draw Phase by activating Pair Bear Scare!!, as Chung Chained Breakaway to place Blitzclique Return Stroke to his backrow. With Return Stroke face-up, Chung’s monsters could not be destroyed by card effects! Next, Calusic Normal Summoned Parlor Dragonmaid and activated its effect, but Chung Chained the effect of Whisker, negating Parlor’s effect and destroying it. This allowed Chung to add Blitzclique – Breakaway back to hand and use Surge’s effect to search for Whisker; Calusic activated Forbidden Chalice to try and negate Surge’s effect, but Chung activated the effect of Alternator as Chain Link 4, shuffling Surge back into the Deck. With no other way to get monsters onto the board, and knowing that Chung had a hand full of Blitzclique monsters ready to storm the board, Calusic conceded the first Duel. 

Duel 2

Calusic chose to go first in the second Duel! He Set three cards to his backrow and ended his turn. 

Chung opened with Hideout in the Sky, Coulomb, Crackle Blitzclique, Lava Golem, Blitzclique Alternator, and Surge Blitzclique, then drew Grain Blitzclique for turn! He started by Normal Summoning Surge Blitzclique, and Calusic immediately activated Forbidden Chalice, negating Surge’s effect. Chung then activated Hideout in the Sky, Coulomb, Special Summoning a Token to Calusic’s side of the field and searching for another copy of Surge. Next, he activated the effect of Grain Blitzclique, but Calusic Chained Gravedigger’s Trap Hole, negating Grain’s effect! Chung then activated the effect of Surge in his hand, destroying the Token on Calusic’s field to Special Summon it. He entered the Battle Phase and attacked Calusic’s Life Points directly with both copies of Surge, then Set a card to his backrow and ended his turn. 

Calusic began his turn by Normal Summoning Chamber Dragonmaid and activating its effect. Chung responded by activating the effect of Crackle Blitzclique, Calusic Chained Dragonmaid Tidying, and Chung Chained Blitzclique Alternator as Chain Link 4! Chung searched for Emi Blitzclique before Alternator was returned to the hand, as Calusic returned Chamber to his hand and resolved its effect to search for Dragonmaid’s Hospitality. Next, Calusic activated Hospitality, Special Summoning Chamber Dragonmaid and sending Dragonmaid Cehrmba to the Graveyard. He then banished both of them and Special Summoned Lady’s Dragonmaid! This allowed him to Special Summon Parlor Dragonmaid and send Dragonmaid Lorpar to the Graveyard. Here, Chung activated the effect of Whisker Blitzclique, Special Summoning it and Grain from hand to destroy Parlor and Lady’s Dragonmaid. In the following chain, Calusic used the effect of D.D. Crow to banish Coulomb from the Graveyard, as Chung searched for Blitzclique Alternator and Blitzclique – Breakaway. Calusic then ended his turn. 

Chung drew Mystical Space Typhoon for turn! During the Standby Phase, Calusic activated the effect of Dragonmaid Tidying in his Graveyard, banishing it to Special Summon back Lady’s Dragonmaid from the Graveyard. He then used its effect to Special Summon Chamber Dragonmaid and search for another copy of Dragonmaid’s Hospitality! Chung activated Breakaway, returning Emi to hand to destroy Lady’s Draognmaid, then activated the effect of Emi, Special Summoning it and destroying Chamber Dragonmaid. This allowed him to search for another copy of each Whisker Blitzclique and Hideout in the Sky, Coulomb! Chung activated Hideout, used its effect to search for Whisker, then Special Summoned Whisker and proceeded to the Battle Phase. He attacked Calusic’s Life Points directly with all of his monsters, winning him the Duel!
