Advanced Round 1 Feature Match: Gary Miotke vs. Juan Hernandez

Gary Miotke from Detroit, Michigan has been traveling to YCS events with his sons Brandon Miotke and Aaron Miotke for decades. Brandon had tremendous success at YCS events over the years, with many of his Dueling skills gained by practicing against his father Gary. Today, Gary is back in the Dueling arena at YCS Houston, and he’s facing off against local Duelist Juan Hernandez from Houston, Texas! Gary considers his sons the stronger Duelists in the family, but he’s no stranger to his own Dueling success. Back in 2010, he made it to the Top 4 of YCS Rosemont on Father’s Day! Now, he’s Dueling in this Round 1 Feature Match, and is looking to repeat some of his former success. Miotke is using a Clown Crew Deck that utilizes a Power Patron engine boosted by Beyond the Brave, and Hernandez is using a Branded Deck. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

Miotke opened up Duel 1 with Nibiru, the Primal Being, Clown Crew Rehearsal, Clown Crew Biancaviso, Clown Crew Flair, and Vidolium the Unstable Power Patron of Unity.

He activated the effect of Clown Crew Flair in his hand by revealing it and added Clown Crew Malabrisme from his Deck to his hand before discarding Vidolium. Next, he activated Malabrisme and used its effect to Special Summon Clown Crew Diabolo and Clown Crew Fiends from his Extra Deck. He then Tributed both monsters to Tribute Summon Clown Crew Biancaviso. He activated the effects of Biancaviso, Fiends, and Diabolo. He Set Clown Crew Soiree Operations and Clown Crew Matinee Operatics before drawing Mulcharmy Purulia and another Vidolium from his Deck. Next, he activated Rehearsal by Tributing Flair. Hernandez Chained the effect of Bystial Saronir to banish Flair and Special Summon the Saronir. Rehearsal’s effect resolved and Miotke added Clown Crew Finale and Biancaviso from his Deck to his hand. Miotke flipped up his Operatics and then activated its effect to Special Summon Clown Crew Meteor from his Extra Deck. He Set Finale and then entered his End Phase. He drew 3 cards – Purulia, Fydraulis Harmonia, and Ars Magna the Finite and the Infinite – with the effect of Operatics. Since he had 7 cards in his hand, he discarded a Purulia.

Hernandez activated Branded Lost and Miotke Chained Finale by discarding Nibiru and Purulia to destroy the Branded Lost and Saronir. Hernandez used Saronir’s effect to send Branded in White from his Deck to his Graveyard. He activated Branded Opening next, and Miotke Chained Clown Crew Soiree Operations to Special Summon Flair from his Deck and Diabolo from his Extra Deck. Hernandez discarded a Branded Opening from his hand and Special Summoned Despian Tragedy from his Deck. Miotke banished Finale from his Graveyard and Tributed Flair to add Clown Crew Cappello from his Deck to his hand. He used Flair’s effect to put the Tragedy face-down. Next, Hernandez activated Branded Fusion! He sent Fallen of Albaz and Aluber the Jester of Despia from his Deck to his Graveyard to Special Summon Lubellion the Searing Dragon from his Extra Deck. He activated Lubellion’s effect by discarding Branded Beast from his hand. He returned Lubellion from his field and Fallen of Albaz from his Graveyard back to the Deck to Summon Mirrorjade the Iceblade Dragon in Attack Position. Hernandez activated Mirrorjade’s effect by sending Albion the Branded Dragon from his Extra Deck to his Graveyard. Miotke Chained the effect of Soiree Operations by banishing it from his Graveyard and Tributed Diabolo to Summon Biancaviso from his hand. Mirrorjade’s effect banished the newly Summoned Biancaviso and Diabolo’s effect returned all Fusion Monsters on the field and in the Graveyards back to the Extra Deck, including the Mirrorjade! Hernandez ended his turn, and Miotke drew 2 cards with the effect of Operatics in the End Phase.

Miotke banished Malabrisme from his Graveyard and Tributed Cappello from his hand to return the face-down Tragedy on Hernandez’s field to his hand. He Special Summoned Diabolo from his Extra Deck with Cappello’s effect. Next, Miotke activated Vidolium in his Pendulum Zone and used its effect to destroy it and increase the ATK of Level 12 “Power Patron” monsters by 5000 for the turn. He added Prohibited Power Patron Portal – Terminus from his Deck to his hand with Vidolium’s effect. He then Special Summoned the Level 12 Vidolium from face-up in his Extra Deck by returning a Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Monster from his Graveyard to his Extra Deck. A direct attack from Vidolium in the Battle Phase inflicted 10,000 points of damage directly to Hernandez’s Life Points and ended the Duel!

He then activated Tragedy’s effect in the Graveyard, but Miotke negated it with Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Hernandez Normal Summoned Guiding Quem, the Virtuous next and used its effect to send Blazing Cartesia, the Virtuous from his Deck to his Graveyard. Miotke Set Operatics from his Deck and then shuffled all Fusion Monsters on the field and in the Graveyard into the Deck, including Chorozo. Next, Miotke used Operatics to Special Summon Clown Crew Dristy from his Extra Deck, and triggered the effects of his two banished Ars Magna cards to Special Summon them from banishment. Miotke entered his Battle Phase and then attacked directly with all four his monsters, dropping Hernandez down to 3500 Life Points. A second attack from Biancaviso thanks to Dristy’s effect dropped Hernandez down to 1000 Life Points.
