Top 16: Fired-Up Jonathan Barber VS Fusionist Deryck Rothenberger

Jonathan Barber from Jacksonville, Florida is facing off against Deryck Rothenberger from Indianapolis in a Top 16 Feature Match that pits Flamvellsworn against Miracle Gemini! Neither of these Decks were highly anticipated to be top contenders this weekend, but one of them is now guaranteed to make it to the Quarterfinals.

Top 16 Feature Match: James Neumann VS Maurice Brantley

Maurice Brantley is running the last Absolute Zero Deck remaining in the tournament. His opponent, James Neumann, is planning to eliminate the Deck once and for all by scoring a quick win with his X-Sabers and making it to the Top 8. Will he be able to do it?

Round 2 Feature Match: Russ Hunter VS Mike Valdez

Earlier today we examined Russ Hunter’s Hero Beat Deck in a Deck Profile.  An offshoot of the LIGHT Gemini Beatdown strategy that won YCS San Jose for Angel Flores 2 weeks ago, it packs a different spread of Elemental Heroes to take advantage of big monster removal while dropping the LIGHT component.  Hunter traveled here this weekend from Lexington, Kentucky, and his opponent is Mike Valdez from Rockland New York.  Valdez is a Machina Gadget Duelist, playing some creative choices like Blue Thunder T-45.

Deck Profile: Russ Hunter’s Elemental Hero Beatdown

Angel Flores dominated YCS San Jose 2 weeks ago, capturing the Championship title with LIGHT Gemini Beatdown: an Elemental Hero Deck packed with high-ATK Level 4 monsters and tons of monster removal.  Flores’ Deck won by knocking all of his opponent’s monsters off the field, giving him the opportunity to make strong, game-winning attacks with 1900 ATK monsters.  Duelists stood up and took notice: not only are we seeing LIGHT Gemini Beatdown in contention in this morning’s field, but we’re also seeing variants that use different cards towards similar ends.

One such variant is 15 year-old Russ Hunter’s Hero Beat Deck.  While Flores played Elemental Hero Stratos alongside Elemental Hero Neos Alius and Thunder King Rai-Oh, Hunter is using Stratos with Elemental Hero Wildheart, Ocean, and even Heat to pressure his opponents. King Tiger Wanghu fends off a variety of monsters that we expect to see played here today, and Deep Sea Diva gives Hunter easy access to Synchro Monsters and Elemental Hero Absolute Zero.  Here’s what his Deck looks like:

Deck Profile: Nicky Lacaille’s Miracle Monarchs
