Round 8 Feature Match: Marshaun Young vs. Christopher Evans
Marshaun Young is currently 6-1 with the Fairy Chaos Deck we profiled at the start of the tournament. His opponent, Christopher Evans, has a 6-1 record with Infernities. Young’s 3 copies of Royal Decree may make this a tough matchup for Evans, but if Evans can draw the right cards early on, he may be able to defeat Young before he gets his Deck up-and-running. A victory here will put one of these Duelists into a great position to make the Top 32 after the 2 rounds of swiss tomorrow morning.

Evans activated Infernity Inferno next turn. He discarded Solemn Judgment and Infernity Break to send Infernity Archfiend and Infernity Avenger from his Deck to his Graveyard. Then he Summoned Infernity Necromancer with no cards left in his hand. It switched into Defense Position and then Evans activated its effect to Special Summon Infernity Archfiend from his Graveyard in Attack Position. He used his Archfiend’s effect to search his Deck for Infernity Launcher and add it to his hand. Evans Set the Launcher and then attacked Young’s Sangan with his Archfiend. Always order your moves to play around a potential Torrential Tribute. In Duel 3, we saw Young Special Summon Cyber Dragon, attack Infernity Archfiend, Set Snowman Eater, and then use Monster Reborn to Special Summon his opponent’s Archfiend. Keeping the Archfiend out of Evans’ Graveyard was a good idea, but Evans had Torrential Tribute, and when he flipped it Young lost 3 cards. If he’d activated Monster Reborn before Setting Snowman Eater, Evans would’ve had to activate Torrential in response to the Archfiend being Summoned, and Young would’ve kept his Snowman. Always think about Torrential Tribute.

Royal Decree is a great card to use to defeat Infernity Decks, since Infernity Duelists heavily rely on their Trap Cards to set up combos and protect themselves. Young was able to seal the second Duel by flipping Royal Decree face-up and shutting down all of Evans’s face-down Traps. But Young could have put his Royal Decree to even better use if he declined to attack with his Chaos Sorcerer on the turn that he Set his Decree. Young should have suspected that one of the cards in Evans’s back row was a Trap Card that would take down Chaos Sorcerer when it attacked, since he hadn’t previously attacked in that Duel, and those back rows were Set since Evans’s first turn. By declining to attack, Young could have protected his Sorcerer from Mirror Force by activating Royal Decree on his next turn.
