Round 9: Julien Lafon vs. Marquis Henderson

Julien Lafon and Marquis Henderson are both currently 7-1 in the tournament and guaranteed a seat in Day 2. But a victory in this round will help one of these Duelists get to a Top 32 finish by giving him an 8-1 record for Day 1. Julien Lafon is running Wind-Ups, and Marquis Henderson is using T.G.s. Wind-Up Decks can have a tough time against T.G.s if the T.G. Duelist manages to keep Skill Drain on the field or Set a bunch of back rows, but Wind-Up Decks have several tricks of their own.

Henderson started Duel 1 by activating Pot of Duality, revealing Reborn Tengu, Horn of the Phantom Beast, and Dimensional Prison from the top of his Deck. He added the Horn to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Henderson Summoned T.G. Rush Rhino and Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

Lafon tried to Normal Summon Tour Guide but lost out to Henderson’s Solemn Warning. Lafon Set Fiendish Chain before ending his turn.

Henderson activated Pot of Duality, revealing Reborn Tengu, T.G. Warwolf, and T.G. Rush Rhino from the top of his Deck. He added the Tengu to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back. Next, he Normal Summoned T.G. Warwolf. Warwolf and Rhino both attacked directly, dropping Lafon down to 4800 Life Points. Henderson Set a card to his back row before ending his turn.

Lafon drew Sangan next turn. He Normal Summoned Wind-Up Shark and then Special Summoned another Wind-Up Shark from his hand. Next, he activated Wind-Up Factory and raised the Level of one of his Sharks, searching his Deck for another Wind-Up Shark to add to his hand with his Factory’s effect. Lafon raised the Level of his other Shark next, and Xyz Summoned Tiras, Keeper of Genesis by combining his 2 Sharks. He tried attacking T.G. Warwolf with Tiras, but Henderson flipped TG1-EM1, exchanging his Warwolf for Lafon’s Tiras!

Henderson Normal Summoned Reborn Tengu next turn. He attacked T.G. Warwolf with Reborn Tengu and flipped Horn of the Phantom Beast in the Damage Step to deal an extra 800 points of damage and draw a card. T.G. Rush Rhino attacked directly next, dropping Lafon down to 1500 Life Points. Lafon flipped Fiendish Chain to prevent Tiras from attacking directly, in order to stay in the Duel. Henderson Set a card to his back row in Main Phase 2 and then detached a material from Tiras in his End Phase.

Lafon drew Maxx “C” next turn. He Normal Summoned Wind-Up Rat and then revealed Wind-Up Shark from his hand to Special Summon it. Next, he used the effect of his Wind-Up Factory to add Wind-Up Rat from his Deck to his hand. Lafon tried to use his Rat’s effect, but Henderson flipped Skill Drain to negate it. Unable to destroy Skill Drain, Lafon conceded.

Marquis Henderson controls Duel 1 with his Trap Cards, and Marquis Henderson is powerless to get his Wind-Up Deck going. Julien Lafon will be going first in Duel 2!

Lafon activated Wind-Up Factory and then Normal Summoned Wind-Up Rat. He activated his Shark’s effect to Special Summon it from his hand, and then used his Factory’s effect to add Wind-Up Shark from his Deck to his hand. Next, he lowered his Shark to Level 3 and combined it with Wind-Up Rat to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity. He detached Wind-Up Shark from Zenmaity to Special Summon Wind-Up Hunter from his Deck, and then Special Summoned Wind-Up Shark from his hand. He used Hunter’s effect to Tribute Zenmaity and pitch Bottomless Trap Hole from Henderson’s hand. Next, he combined his 2 monsters to Summon another Zenmaity and detached Wind-Up Hunter to Summon another Rat. He used his Rat’s effect to Special Summon another Hunter, Tributed Zenmaity to pitch Reborn Tengu from Henderson’s hand, and then Summoned another Zenmaity. He detached Wind-Up Hunter once again to Special Summon his last Wind-Up Rat, and used its effect to Special Summon Wind-Up Hunter again. He Tributed Zenmaity to pitch Horn of the Phantom Beast from Henderson’s hand and then activated Pot of Avarice! Lafon returned 2 Rats and 3 Zenmaitys to his Deck and Extra Deck to draw Solemn Judgment and Tour Guide From the Underworld. Next, he combined his Rat and Hunter to Xyz Summon another Zenmaity. He detached Hunter once again to Special Summon Wind-Up Rat and then used Rat’s effect to Special Summon Hunter. By Tributing Zenmaity, Lafon pitched Skill Drain from Henderson’s hand. Next, he Xyz Summoned another Zenmaity and detached Wind-Up Hunter to Special Summon another Rat. He used Rat’s effect to return Hunter to the field and Tributed Zenmaity to get rid of Henderson’s last in-hand card: Mirror Force. Next, he Lafon combined Rat and Hunter to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity, and used its effect to Special Summon Wind-Up Rabbit from his Deck. Lafon Set Solemn Judgment and Royal Decree before ending his turn.

Henderson began his first turn with no cards in his hand! He drew Pot of Avarice in his Draw Phase and Set it.

Lafon drew Wind-Up Shark. He Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and activated its effect to Special Summon Sangan from his Deck. Next, he activated his Zenmaity’s effect by detaching its last Xyz Material, and Special Summoned Wind-Up Rabbit from his Deck. Lafon combined Sangan with Tour Guide to Summon Number 20: Giga-Brilliant next, and detached Sangan to boost the ATK of all of his monsters. Lafon attacked directly with all of his monsters in the Battle Phase, and Henderson fell down to 700 Life Points.

Henderson drew Reborn Tengu and conceded.

Julien Lafon eliminates all 5 cards from Henderson’s opening hand on the first turn to win Duel 2! Marquis Henderson will be going first in Duel 3!

Henderson opened up Duel 3 by Normal Summoning Reborn Tengu and Setting 4 cards to his back row before ending his first turn.

Lafon Summoned Tour Guide and activated her effect to Special Summon Sangan in Attack Position. Next, he activated Wind-Up Factory; but Henderson destroyed it immediately with Mystical Space Typhoon! Lafon combined his monsters to Special Summon Wind-Up Zenmaines in Defense Position and ended his turn after placing Solemn Judgment and Mystical Space Typhoon in his back row.

Henderson Set a card to his back row and then Summoned Beast King Barbaros.

Lafon drew Cyber Dragon and passed.

Henderson drew and Summoned T.G. Rush Rhino before ending his turn.

Lafon drew Wind-Up Shark and passed.

Henderson drew and Summoned a second Reborn Tengu. He combined his 2 Tengus to Summon Number 39: Utopia. Utopia attacked Zenmaines to get rid of an Xyz Material and then Rhino attacked Zenmaines. Lafon flipped Horn of the Phantom Beast in the Damage Step and Lafon flipped Solemn Judgment to negate it and prevent Zenmaines from losing another Xyz Material. In the End Phase, Lafon destroyed Henderson’s face-down Starlight Road with his Zenmaines’s effect.

Lafon drew Thunder King Rai-Oh and then flipped Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Henderson’s face-down Bottomless Trap Hole. Next, he Normal Summoned Wind-Up Rat and Special Summoned Wind-Up Shark from his hand. He lowered his Shark to Level 3 and then combined it with his Rat in an attempt to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity; but Henderson flipped Solemn Warning and negated its Summon!

Henderson drew a card and passed.

Lafon drew Fiendish Chain next turn. He Normal Summoned Wind-Up Rat and activated its effect to Special Summon Wind-Up Shark from his Graveyard. He lowered the Shark’s Level to 3 and then combined it with Wind-Up Rat in order to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity. Lafon detached Wind-Up Shark from Zenmaity to Special Summon Wind-Up Hunter from his Deck, and Henderson Special Summoned T.G. Warwolf from his hand. Lafon Set Fiendish Chain before ending his turn.

Henderson drew and activated Pot of Duality next turn, revealing Mystical Space Typhoon, Dimensional Prison, and another Pot of Duality from the top of his Deck. He took the Duality and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Next, he attacked Wind-Up Hunter and Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity with T.G. Rush Rhino and Beast King Barbaros to destroy them. Number 39: Utopia attacked Zenmaines next, costing it an Xyz Material. Henderson Set his Pot of Duality in Main Phase 2 and lost Utopia to Zenmaines’s effect in the End Phase.

Lafon drew Royal Decree and Set it. He Normal Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh and used it to attack and destroy T.G. Rush Rhino. Rai-Oh kept Henderson from searching his Deck in the End Phase.

Henderson Set a card to his back row and then attacked Thunder King Rai-Oh with Barbaros, destroying them both.

Lafon drew Wind-Up Factory and Set it.

Henderson activated his face-down Pot of Duality, revealing Monster Reborn, Mirror Force, and Mind Crush from the top of his Deck. He took Monster Reborn and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Henderson Set a monster before passing.

Lafon drew Mystical Space Typhoon next turn and passed.

Henderson Flip Summoned Reborn Tengu. Then he activated Monster Reborn to Special Summon Beast King Barbaros from his Graveyard. Barbaros attacked Wind-Up Zenmaines, and Lafon flipped Fiendish Chain to leave Barbaros unable to attack. Henderson Set a card to his back row before ending his turn.

Lafon drew Wind-Up Rabbit next turn. He flipped up a Wind-Up Factory and then Summoned the Rabbit. Lafon Set Mystical Space Typhoon before ending his turn.

Henderson attacked Wind-Up Rabbit with T.G. Warwolf, sending his Warwolf to the Graveyard and costing him 200 Life Points. Then Reborn Tengu attacked the Rabbit, and Lafon banished his Rabbit to use his Factory’s effect and grab a Wind-Up Shark. After he searched his Deck for the Shark, Lafon flipped Skill Drain. In the End Phase, Henderson grabbed a T.G. Striker from his Deck with the effect of Warwolf.

Lafon drew Instant Fusion next turn. He flipped Royal Decree to shut down Skill Drain and then Normal Summoned Wind-Up Shark. Next, he raised its Level to 5 and activated Instant Fusion to Special Summon Ojama Knight. Lafon combined his Wind-Up Shark and Ojama Knight to Xyz Summon Tiras, Keeper of Genesis! Tiras attacked and destroyed Reborn Tengu, and then Tiras destroyed Barbaros with its effect at the end of the Battle Phase. Tiras detached a material from itself in the End Phase.

Henderson activated Pot of Avarice next turn! He returned 3 Tengus, a T.G. Rush Rhino, and a T.G. Warwolf from his Graveyard to his Deck to draw 2 cards.

Time in the round was called at that point, and both Duelists were given 3 more turns (including the current turn) to finish the Duel. After those 6 turns passed, the Duelist with the most Life Points was to be declared the winner.

After drawing his 2 cards, Henderson Special Summoned T.G. Striker, followed by T.G. Warwolf. Then he Normal Summoned Reborn Tengu. Henderson Tuned all 3 of his monsters together to Synchro Summon Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier! He activated its effect and Lafon Chained the effect of Wind-Up Rabbit! Trishula banished Cyber Dragon from Lafon’s hand, Royal Decree from his field, and Wind-Up Hunter from his Graveyard. Lafon searched his Deck for Wind-Up Rat with the effect of his Wind-Up Factory, which triggered off of Rabbit’s effect. Trishula attacked and destroyed Tiras before Henderson ended his turn.

Lafon drew Tour Guide From the Underworld next turn. He brought back his Wind-Up Rabbit in his Standby Phase and then activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Skill Drain. Next, he banished Wind-Up Rabbit with its effect to search his Deck for Wind-Up Shark and add it to his hand with Wind-Up Factory. Lafon Normal Summoned Wind-Up Rat next, and used its effect to Special Summon Wind-Up Shark from his Graveyard. He revealed a Wind-Up Shark from his hand to Special Summon it and then boosted the Level of both Sharks to 5. He combined both monsters in order to Xyz Summon Adreus, Keeper of Armageddon and then detached a material from Adreus to try to destroy Trishula; but Henderson flipped Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror to negate Adreus’s effect! Adreus attacked and destroyed Henderson’s Tengu, and Henderson Special Summoned another copy from his Deck.

Henderson Summoned T.G. Rush Rhino and then used his Rhino and Trishula to attack and destroyed Lafon’s Rat and Adreus.

Lafon drew Pot of Avarice and activated it to draw Tour Guide From the Underworld and Royal Decree from his Deck. Then he banished his Wind-Up Rabbit and added Wind-Up Rat from his Deck to his hand with the effect of his Wind-Up Factory. He Summoned the Rat and activated its effect to Special Summon Wind-Up Shark from his Graveyard and then lowered the Shark’s Level to 3. Lafon combined Shark and his Rat to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity, and then detached Shark from Zenmaity to Special Summon Wind-Up Rat from his Deck. He used Rat’s effect to Special Summon Shark again, turned it into a Level 3 monster, and combined Shark and Rat to Xyz Summon Number 17: Leviathan Dragon. Lafon detached Wind-Up Shark from Number 17: Leviathan Dragon to boost it to 2500 ATK and then attacked Reborn Tengu with it; but Henderson flipped Mirror Force to destroy the Leviathan! Lafon Set Royal Decree before ending his turn.

Henderson attacked and destroyed Zenmaity with Trishula. He Set a card to his back row and ended his turn. In his End Phase, Lafon flipped Royal Decree.

Lafon drew Wind-Up Rat next turn! It was the final turn of the Duel and Lafon was down by 700 Life Points. He returned his Rabbit to the field in his Standby Phase and then Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld. He activated Tour Guide’s effect to Special Summon Tour Bus From the Underworld from his Deck and then combined Tour Guide with Tour Bus to Summon Leviair the Sea Dragon. He detached Tour Bus From the Underworld from Leviair to Special Summon Wind-Up Hunter and then used his Bus’s effect to send Wind-Up Rat from his Graveyard to his Deck. Next, he combined Hunter with Rat to Xyz Summon Number 20: Giga-Brilliant. Lafon used Giga-Brilliant’s effect to boost his monsters by 300 ATK each, giving him just enough power to win the Duel! Lafon had 2800 Life Points and Henderson had 3500 ATK before the Battle Phase. Leviair (2100 ATK) attacked over Henderson’s T.G. Rush Rhino (1600 ATK) and then Number 20: Giga-Brilliant (2100 ATK) attacked over his Reborn Tengu (1700 ATK), dropping Henderson down to 2600 Life Points. The extra turns were over, and Lafon was declared the winner.

Julien Lafon uses his Wind-Up Deck to defeat Marquis Henderson in an extremely close 2-1 victory! Julien Lafon is moving on with an 8-1 record!
