Deck Statistics from YCS San Jose

October 9th, 2010

You may remember that the 5 most popular Decks at YCS Toronto were Gladiator Beasts, X-Sabers, Blackwings, Quickdraw Dandywarrior, and Gadgets, in that order. Although YCS San Jose had the same 5 most popular Decks, the order of their popularity was different.

Fresh off their win from YCS Toronto, X-Sabers were the most popular Deck used in San Jose, comprising of 15.4% of the field. Gladiator Beasts were bumped down to second, making up 12.5% of the field. Blackwings remained the third most popular Deck, despite a small dip in representation to 11.5%. Quickdraw Dandywarrior and Gadgets swapped places in popularity since Toronto, with 7.2% of the Duelists in San Jose running Gadgets, and 6.7% of the Duelists in San Jose running Quickdraw Dandywarrior. Of these 5 major Decks, only Blackwings maintained its popularity rank from Toronto, indicating an ever-changing game.

Top Deck diversity has clearly risen since Toronto. In Toronto these 5 most popular Decks made up 64.6% of the field. But weeks later, at YCS San Jose, these same 5 Decks only made up 53.3% of the field. That means almost half of the field was running a different creation, including the 6th most popular Deck, Lightsworn, comprising of 5.6% of the field, or the 7th most popular Deck, Infernities, making up 4.2% of the competition.

Deck Profile: Yuki Zainovich’s Phoenixian Skill Drain Deck

September 25th, 2010

The new format has sent alot of Duelists back to the drawing board, and the strength of Decks like X-Sabers and Gladiator Beasts has Skill Drain a top choice for some. Earlier, we showed you Chris Bowling’s Eatos Beatdown Deck with Skill Drain. That Deck stops Gladiators and X-Sabers with Skill Drain, and then hammers through for victory with big attackers like Thunder King Rai-Oh and Beast King Barbaros. Fourteen year-old Yuki Zainovich is taking the same basic concept in a totally different direction, looking to dominate the field not with simple 1900 ATK monsters, but with the 2200 ATK Phoenixian Cluster Amaryllis. Costume Profile: Emily Nelsen’s Akiza Costume

July 11th, 2010

As the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series and tournaments like this weekend’s WCQ keep growing, more and more Yu-Gi-Oh! fans are becoming part of these big-event experiences. One part of that trend is costumes – Duelists dressing like their favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! characters. It’s not a common sight yet, but little by little, dedicated costumed Duelists are beginning to appear at the biggest tournaments.

Emily Nelsen is one example. She first turned heads at YCS Chicago when she appeared in her full Akiza costume. She reprised that role this weekend, wowing 5D’s fans and competitive Duelists alike. Naturally we had to talk to her, and she graciously obliged.
