Starstrike Blast Preview: Spellstone Sorcerer Karood and Powersink Stone

November 4th, 2010

Spellstone Sorcerer Karood gives Spellcaster Duelists a new way to disrupt Graveyard based combos. Whenever a monster other than Karood activates its effect, Karood gets a Spellstone Counter (it can only have 1 on it at a time) and its DEF goes up to 2200. Also, once per turn you can remove a Spellstone Counter from your side of the field to remove 1 of your opponent’s cards in their Graveyard from play. If you’re playing against Plant Synchro  or Quickdraw Dandywarrior you’ll want to get rid of Dandylion, Infernities don’t want to see their Infernity Archfiends get removed, and Monarch Decks have a difficult time doing anything if they don’t have a Treeborn Frog in the Graveyard.

Karood can get rid of your opponent’s combo pieces.

Spellstone Sorcerer Karood’s Spellstone Counters aren’t the same thing as Spell Counters, so you won’t be able to combine them with Magical Citadel of Endymion or Tempest Magician. You will be able to combine them with Powersink Stone, a Continuous Trap from Starstrike Blast that acts like a Skill Drain that can turn on and off each turn.  Whenever a monster effect is activated, Powersink Stone gets a Spellstone Counter (max. 2). When it has 2, the effects of all face-up monsters are negated, and they can’t be activated either. That means that cards like Exiled Force and Stardust Dragon can’t dodge Powersink Stone like they’d be able to if Skill Drain was in play. It also means you can do some clever things with Karood.

Both cards can work together to generate lots of counters at once.

Spellstone Sorcerer Karood can set up some interesting combos with Powersink Stone when they’re both face-up on the field. When a monster effect is activated both cards will get a Spellstone Counter. From here you can use Karood’s effect to remove a counter from Powersink, and then remove a card from play. Spellstone Sorcerer Karood’s effect to remove a counter is a cost, so when you activate it while Powersink Stone only has 1 Counter on it, Powersink will go back to having 0 counters before going back to 1 instead of first going up to 2 and negating Karood’s effect. Unlike Powersink Stone, Spellstone Sorcerer Karood gets to keep its Counter once your turn ends, so it gets to keep its 2200 DEF throughout your opponent’s turn!

Powersink Stone and Spellstone Sorcerer Karood work together in a way unlike many cards we’ve seen before, and you’ll find plenty of other unique and interesting cards in your packs at the Starstrike Blast Sneak Peek on November 6th and 7th!
