Safe Zone

The safe zone: it’s where every monster wants to be. Monsters in the safe zone are nearly invincible. They can’t be targeted or destroyed by an opponent’s card effects and can’t be destroyed by battle. They’re completely safe. The only way to take down a monster in the safe zone is by eliminating the safe zone itself.

The Continuous Trap Card Safe Zone will make sure that your monsters endure even the toughest situations. Whether your opponent tries to envelop your monster with Dark Hole or defeat it in a Boss Rush, flipping Safe Zone will protect your monster.

Safe Zone can only be used on an Attack Position monster. But that monster doesn’t have to stay in Attack Position. You can flip Safe Zone to protect your monster on your opponent’s turn, and then switch your protected monster to Defense Position. Since it can’t be targeted or destroyed, that monster becomes an impenetrable wall.

The downsides of Safe Zone are easily overcome. First, if Safe Zone is removed from the field, the monster that it’s protecting is destroyed. But that just means Safe Zone can be used offensively, too. If your opponent tries to destroy it with a card like Mystical Space Typhoon or the effect of Dark Armed Dragon, you can flip Safe Zone and target an opponent’s Attack Position monster. Since Safe Zone will be destroyed, so will your opponent’s chosen monster.

You can also use cards like Mist Valley Falcon and Giant Trunade to return Safe Zone to your hand after targeting an opponent’s monster with it. That lets you recycle Safe Zone while taking down an opponent’s monster in the process.

The other downside of Safe Zone is that the monster it’s protecting can’t attack your opponent directly. The monster can, however, destroy your opponents’ monsters in battle and inflict battle damage when it attacks them. The monster protected by Safe Zone can also be Tributed or used in a Synchro Summon, so you’ll have no problem putting it to use.

Safe Zone works especially well with Gladiator Beasts. If you’re running Gladiator Beasts, you can protect your monster with Safe Zone when an opponent’s monster attacks it, and then tag it out at the end of the Battle Phase to grab a new Gladiator Beast. That new Gladiator Beast won’t be bound by Safe Zone, and will be able to attack your opponent directly. Alternatively, you can use a protected Gladiator Beast in a Fusion to Summon big monsters like Gladiator Beast Gyzarus and Gladiator Beast Essedarii.
