GAOV Preview: Draconnection

April 26th, 2012

Dragon-Type monsteres are some of the most iconic monsters in all of Dueling!  From the early days of Blue-Eyes White Dragon, to Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon today, Dragons have always been some of the biggest and coolest monsters in the game.  Cards like Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon, Dark Armed Dragon, and even Koa’ki Meiru Drago are feared and respected.  It’s not just about their size – Duelists that command the might of Dragons get to play incredible effects that can single-handedly reshape your Duel.

But the trick to making the most of those awesome abilities?  It all comes down to one thing: having the right cards at the right time.  Until now, there hasn’t been any way for Dragons to get to their best cards at key moments.  But that’s all going to change with Galactic Overlord.  The new World Premiere card Draconnection finally brings universal search power to the Dragon arsenal.

Draconnection

Reveal 1 Dragon-Type monster in your hand, add 1 Dragon-Type monster with the same Level from your Deck to your hand, then shuffle the revealed monster into the Deck.

Draconnection lets you trade a Dragon you don’t need, to go get one that’s more useful.  That doesn’t just help you even out your draws: it turns any Dragon with the same Level as the one you want, into another copy.  Want to see a clutch Level 8 Dragon-Type more often than you normally could?  Just play other Level 8’s to feed Draconnection, and watch your consistency rise.  There are lots of strategies that can benefit from that kind of boost, but the first one on everybody’s minds should be the new “Hieratic” monsters.

SWAP-OUT

Most Hieratics have powerful effects that let you Special Summon a Dragon-Type Normal Monster (from your hand, Deck, or Graveyard,) when the “Hieratic” monster is Tributed.  Those effects usually cut the ATK and DEF of whatever you Special Summon, but they also help you Xyz Summon Duel-devastating monsters like Hieratic Dragon King of Atum and Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis. You really want to have cards like Hieratic Seal of the Dragon King and Hieratic Seal of the Sun Dragon Overlord in your Deck or Graveyard, not your hand, and Draconnection is cool because it lets you put those cards back and get something better if you draw them.

Lots of Hieratic Dragons pair well with Draconnection.

-Trade the Level 8 Hieratic Seal of the Sun Dragon Overlord for Hieratic Dragon of Sutekh.

-Swap Hieratic Dragon of Nuit for Hieratic Dragon of Gebeb, and vice versa, since both are Level 4.

Hieratic Dragon of Eset and Hieratic Dragon of Nebthet are both Level 5, so you can play Draconnection with them, too.

-You can swap Hieratic Seal of the Dragon King for Hieratic Dragon of Tefnuit or Hieratic Dragon of Su too!

SWAP-IN

Draconnection is useful for classic Dragon strategies as well.  Light and Darkness Dragon is one of the most powerful cards of all time, negating your opponent’s cards and then Special Summoning back nearly any monster from your Graveyard when it’s finally destroyed.  It’s been a tournament-winning card for years, but it’s difficult to build a Deck around because you can’t control whether or not you’ll draw it.  Now, you can use Draconnection to search it out.

In fact, Level 8 monsters like Light and Darkness Dragon are especially good with Draconnection, because it’s easy to get another Level 8 Dragon to trade.  The White Stone of Legend is a Level 1 monster, but when it’s sent to the Graveyard it lets you add a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from your Deck to your hand.  You can use White Stone for a Synchro Summon (it’s a Tuner!), or discard it to activate something like Cards of Consonance, and get a free Blue-Eyes.  Then, send Blue-Eyes back to your Deck with Draconnection to get any Level 8 – even Light and Darkness Dragon.

Koa’ki Meiru Drago is another Duel-defining Dragon that gets more powerful when you can search it out reliably.  Drago’s effect stops both Duelists from Special Summoning LIGHT or DARK monsters, so it shuts down entire Decks just by being face-up on the field.  Drago is a Level 4, and there are plenty of useful Dragons with the same Level.  Draconnection can get you to Drago, Dodger Dragon, Debris Dragon, Divine Dragon Apocralyph, or Red-Eyes Wyvern.  They can all be game-breaking monsters in the right situations, so being able to swap for the one you need can give you a big advantage.

Draconnection is all about consistency, and options.  Play it in your Dragon Deck, and you’ll be able to get what you want, when you want it!
