The Seal of Orichalcos: The First Line

September 6th, 2012

The Seal of Orichalcos needs no introduction. If you haven’t watched season 4 of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! TV series, go and do it now!

Just as the Orichalcos’ double-chevron pattern has 6 points to its design, The Seal of Orichalcos has 6 sentences of text. We’ll talk about the first – and most important – sentence today, and let you play fill-in-the-blank with the others until they, too, are revealed:

All monsters you control gain 500 ATK.
____ ___ ____, ____ ____ ______ __ _________ __ ____ _______.
_____ ___ _______ _ __ ____ ____-__ ______ ________ ________, ____ ________ ______ ______ ____ _______(_) ____ ___ ______ ___ ___ __ ______.
____ ____ ____ __ _________: _______ ___ _______ ________ ________ ___ _______.
___ ______ _______ ______ ________ ____ ____ _____ ____.
___ ___ ____ ________ “___ ____ __ __________” ____ ___ ____.

Empowering Your Monsters

The Seal of Orichalcos’ primary effect is short and sweet: 500 extra Attack Points for all your monsters.

What makes this different from most Field Spell Cards is that ONLY your monsters get this boost. Most Field Spells give an increase to all monsters (of both players) that meet certain requirements, usually a specific Attribute, Type, or monster theme.

But the power of The Orichalcos works for you and ONLY for you.

Until now, there have only been two Field Spell Cards that have increased YOUR monsters’ ATK without also increasing your opponent’s monsters. The first is Closed Forest, which only increases Beasts you control, and is dependent on the number of monsters in your Graveyard. The second – and this one is debatable – is Temple of the Six (which reduces your opponent’s monsters ATK instead of increasing yours… not a big difference in head-to-head fights, but not as good when you’re making direct attacks).

Putting the Orichalcos to Work for You

A 500 ATK boost is no small deal. Even a 100 point boost is enough to let your monsters win out against similar monsters your opponent controls, especially in a mirror-match or if you’re both using similar Extra Deck monsters. But 500 points? That raises your monsters to an entirely new category.

With The Seal of Orichalcos:

  • Searchers like Giant Rat can destroy 1900 monsters like Thunder King in battle – and then you get to search.
  • Popular cards like Wind-Up Rabbit become beatdown monsters.
  • Your Level 4 HERO monsters become as powerful as a Synchro or Xyz Monster.
  • Your Emissary of Darkness Token (from Gorz) will be able to destroy whatever caused its creation.
  • If you do a massive attack with, say, 4 monsters, that’s another 2000 damage to push through to your opponent’s Life Points.

Meanwhile, your opponent gets nothing.

For general use, and in terms of raw power, The Seal of Orichalcos in many ways renders all other Field Spell Cards obsolete.

Or it would, if not for two things. First, very specific theme Decks (like Six Samurai and Madolche) will still rely on special tricks from their Field Spells in order to operate. And second, The Seal of Orichalcos brings with it some very special restrictions that will make your Duels more like the classic battles seen in the Waking the Dragons arc of the TV series.

How did we make “the most powerful weapon ever created” into a kick-butt card, while preserving the spirit of the TV series and not making ten years of Field Spells irrelevant? Stay tuned and find out!
