Abyss Rising Preview: Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord
In the previous booster set, Return of the Duelist, we were introduced to the ruler of all EARTH monsters and first of the Elemental Lords, Grandsoil the Elemental Lord. Abyss Rising is packed with new WATER monsters, including the second of the Elemental Lords: Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord, the master of WATER monsters! Grandsoil replicates the effect of Monster Reborn when Summoned, so what incredibly powerful effect do you get for Summoning Moulinglacia? Read on to find out!
Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord is a Level 8 WATER Sea Serpent monster with 2800 ATK and 2200 DEF. It works just like Grandsoil the Elemental Lord. First, you need exactly 5 monsters of the appropriate Attribute in your Graveyard, which in this case is WATER. If you’ve got ‘em you can Special Summon Moulinglacia straight from your hand. Just like Grandsoil, if Moulinglacia leaves the field, then your next turn’s Battle Phase is skipped. And just like Grandsoil, you get an incredibly powerful effect when you Summon Moulinglacia.
Throwing a 2800 ATK monster onto the field is always a powerful move, but getting a killer effect along with it is even better. When Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord hits the field, you get to discard 2 random cards from your opponent’s hand! (Or all of them, if they only have 1.) Moulinglacia’s effect is reminiscent of a Forbidden card from the early days of Dueling – Delinquent Duo. Except unlike Duo, Moulinglacia doesn’t give your opponent any choice of what to discard.
Unlike the Spell Card Delinquent Duo, you can’t just use Moulinglacia anywhere you like – you have to prove your loyalty to a WATER-based theme before you can even imagine using this power. And while you can only discard from your opponent’s hand once per turn with this effect, you can still Summon more than one if you want to inflict a lot of damage. You can even decide after your opponent has discarded – if you discard a Gorz, the Emissary of Darkness or Tragoedia, then you might want to go on the offensive!
Getting exactly 5 WATER monsters in your Graveyard might sound like a daunting task, but it’s easy to manipulate your Graveyard to change the number of WATER monsters in it. Salvage allows you to add 2 low-ATK WATER monsters from your Graveyard to your hand, and Pot of Avarice can return 5 to the Deck, letting you draw 2 cards. You can even use Call of the Atlanteans to Special Summon 3 Sea Serpents during your opponent’s End Phase to empty your Graveyard, and then Special Summon Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord on your next turn! If you need to fill up your Graveyard in order to Summon Moulinglacia early on in the Duel, Deep Sea Diva, Genex Undine, Skreech, and Atlantean Heavy Infantry are all great choices. They can help you either send monsters to the Graveyard straight away, or get lots of monsters on the field in order for you to quickly stack up your WATER monsters for Moulinglacia’s Summon.
But what about getting to Moulinglacia in the first place? You can’t really search out Grandsoil without using some fairly arcane tactics, but Moulinglacia is another story. It’s a Sea Serpent, so if you send Atlantean Dragoons to the Graveyard for the cost of a WATER monster’s effect, you can pluck Moulinglacia straight from your Deck and put it in your hand!
Just as the release of Grandsoil the Elemental Lord helped EARTH Decks, Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord will give a massive boost to any kind of WATER Deck you want to make. Combined with the new WATER cards from Structure Deck: Realm of the Sea Emperor and Abyss Rising, Moulinglacia will help you take total control of the Duel! You’ll have your first chance to get Moulinglacia at the Abyss Rising Sneak Peeks on November 3rd and 4th.
