Heliopolis and Hanzo Tins are here!

October 31st, 2012

Yesterday was the first day you could get your hands on the second wave of 2012 Collectible Tins, and if you haven’t checked them out yet you’re in for a treat! Both Collectible Tins contain 5 booster packs along with 5 highly desirable cards to help you build a great new Deck or give your current Deck a power boost.

Heliopolis

The Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis Collectible Tin is highlighted by Heliopolis itself, the strongest of the Hieratic monsters. This Rank 8 is an all-consuming force of destruction, letting you Tribute cards from your field and hand to destroy everything in its path! By Tributing Hieratic monsters you can activate their effects to Summon Normal Dragon-Type monsters to the field for free, and then use them to set up more Xyz Summons. Don’t have any other Hieratic cards? Not to worry, because the tins have Galactic Overlord booster packs that’ll give you a chance to get some!
Rabbit

Rescue Rabbit is a card that’s been the cornerstone of many Duelists’ Decks for the past year, and is now easier than ever to obtain because it’s in both tins! This card can be banished to Special Summon 2 Level 4 or lower Normal Monsters of the same name, which makes it an easy way to Xyz Summon Rank 4 monsters like Evolzar Laggia and Evolzar Dolkka, or Level 3 monsters like Leviair the Sea Dragon (which is also available in the same tin). Switch things up with some Warrior-Type Normal Monsters like Noble Knight Artorigus and you can build your Deck to take advantage of cards like Blade Armor Ninja and the Heroic Champion Xyz Monsters as well!

Leviair

Leviair the Sea Dragon is a Rank 3 Xyz Monster that uses its Materials to Special Summon previously banished monsters. It’s commonly used in Dino Rabbit Decks to bring back a Rescue Rabbit that’s already used its effect, in order to Xyz Summon another Rank 4 monster. Another neat trick of Leviair’s is that you can Special Summon monsters that your opponent had banished also, making it a card that can turn the tides of a Duel in an instant! It’s pretty useful for grabbing a monster that your opponent tried to hide from you with Wind-Up Rabbit.

Malefic

In the same tin you’ll also find Malefic Truth Dragon, the most powerful of the Malefic monsters with an insane 5000 ATK. It can be Summoned from your hand or Graveyard when another Malefic monster is destroyed.  You have to pay half your Life Points to Summon it, but when it hits the field there are very few monsters that can stop it. 5000 ATK means it can take down any monster, and when it does it destroys the rest of your opponent’s (face-up) monsters as well!

Souza

Finally there’s X-Saber Souza, a Level 7 Synchro monster that requires “X-Saber” non-Tuner Monsters as its materials. By Tributing an X-Saber, Souza gains one of 2 effects for the rest of the turn; it can either be immune to destruction from Trap Cards, or destroy opposing monsters immediately without entering damage calculation, which is great for taking down monsters with higher ATK, or those which can’t be destroyed in battle. For best results, Tribute XX-Saber Darksoul and use it to add another X-Saber to your hand. You can quickly Summon Souza with a combo of XX-Saber Boggart Knight and any of the Level 3 X-Saber Tuners.

Hanzo

The Ninja Grandmaster Hanzo Collectible Tin contains Ninja Grandmaster Hanzo, one of the most useful Ninja monsters you can Summon. When Normal Summoned, Hanzo lets you add any Ninjitsu Art card from your Deck to your hand, and when Flip or Special Summoned you can get any other Ninja monster into your hand for free. A common play is to add Ninjitsu Art of Super-Transformation to your hand, use it to send Hanzo and an opposing monster to the Graveyard, and then Special Summon a high ATK Dragon from your Deck. Lightpulsar Dragon and Darkflare Dragon are 2 of the more common monsters to be Summoned by this effect, though if your opponent has a high enough level monster you can also Summon Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon or Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon. Some people even combine Ninjas with the Hieratic Dragons to max out their Summoning powers.

Guide

Tour Guide from the Underworld has been an extremely versatile and useful card even before the first Xyz Monsters, and it’s the fastest way to Summon a generic Rank 3 Xyz Monster. Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity, Wind-Up Zenmaines, Leviair the Sea Dragon, Number 17: Leviathan Dragon and Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction are just 5 commonly used Xyz Monsters that Tour Guide allows you to access over the course of a Duel.

16

Number 16: Shock Master has been making an impact recently and it’s not hard to see why. The ability to shut down any type of card until your next turn is very powerful indeed, as it can eliminate any specific cards you expect will prevent you from winning the Duel, or stop your opponent from making a comeback on their turn. Any Deck with an ability to Summon level 4 monsters quickly will be able to Summon Shock Master at some point, and end Duels in spectacular fashion. Shock Master’s release in the 2012 Collectible Tins also means that it’s available in regions outside of North America for the first time, making it now legal to play in European tournaments.

Maxx

Last but not least there’s Maxx “C”. Like Tour Guide and Rescue Rabbit, Maxx “C” has been a popular choice for a long time. It’s a tricky card to use but also a tricky card to come up against, but is something that Duelists have been putting to good use for the best part of a year and is often one of the final monsters added to a Deck to make it complete.

This year’s Collectible Tins have something for everybody, whether you’re building a tournament-winning Deck for the first time or simply need more cards to support your main strategies, there’s at least 1 or 2 cards that everybody can get good use out of!
