Cosmo Blazer: The Usurper

January 14th, 2013

Galactic Overlord and Return of the Duelist introduced the Noble Knights and Noble Arms, legendary warriors and their equally legendary weapons. It started with Noble Knight Artorigus, then Noble Knight Gawayn and his sword Gallatin and then Ignoble Knight of Black Laundsallyn and his Arfeudutyr. Cosmo Blazer continues the trend, bringing 2 more Noble Knight monsters back to the table. The first is Noble Knight Medraut, but just how noble is he? And to whom does he swear fealty? That’s up to you!

Pay no attention to the evil shadow in the corner.

Most of the time, Noble Knight Medraut is a Level 4 LIGHT Warrior. He’s treated as a Normal Monster while face-up on the field, so you can Special Summon Noble Knight Gawayn from your hand, or Tribute him to Special Summon Ignoble Knight of Black Laundsallyn. Keep in mind that he’s not a Gemini monster even though he seems similar, and he’s only a Normal Monster on the field. But if you equip Medraut with any “Noble Arms” Equip Spell, then his legend will begin to take a very dark turn.

While he’s equipped with a ”Noble Arms” Equip Spell, Medraut gains 1 Level (increasing to Level 5), and he becomes a DARK Effect Monster like Laundsallyn. And if you control no monsters aside from Medraut, then you can Special Summon any “Noble Knight” monster straight from your Deck in Defense Position (except another Medraut), and destroy 1 Equip Spell Card you control. Remember that all of your Noble Arms return to their Knights when destroyed, so Medraut essentially lets you pluck any Knight out of your Deck and then reassign his sword as you see fit.

There are some really cool tricks you can do with Noble Knight Medraut, especially with Noble Arms – Arfeudutyr. Try this combo for instance.

  1. Normal Summon Medraut, and Equip him with Arfeudutyr.
  2. Use Arfeudutyr’s effect to destroy a Set card and drop Medraut’s ATK.
  3. Then, activate Medraut’s effect, bringing forth a Noble Knight from your Deck and destroying Arfeudutyr.
  4. Since it was destroyed, you can re-equip Arfeudutyr to one of your monsters. You can then use Arfeudutyr’s effect again!
  5. If you’re planning to Xyz Summon, and you Summoned Ignoble Knight of Black Laundsallyn, re-equip your “Noble Arms” card to Medraut, making it Level 5 again. (which in this case, destroys another Set card). Then you can Xyz Summon a Rank 5 monster! If you Summoned a monster like Artorigus or Gawayn, equip the new monster with your “Noble Arms” card instead.

Basically, if you have Medraut and a Noble Arms card, you get to Xyz Summon a Rank 4 or 5 monster, and since all the Knights are Warriors, you have access to really great Warrior-only Xyz Monsters like Blade Armor Ninja and the Heroic Champions. The best thing about using this combo with Noble Arms – Arfeudutyr is that your opponent won’t have many (if any) Trap Cards left to stop your Xyz Summon!

Noble Knight Medraut brings the entire Noble Knight strategy together. Its utility as both a Normal Monster and an Effect Monster that gets you whatever monster you need is extremely useful, and allowing you to reuse and re-equip “Noble Arms” cards is excellent. But when it comes to acquiring Noble Arms cards, nobody does it better than the all new Noble Knight Xyz Monster, Artorigus, King of the Noble Knights! His tale is one for a later day, so check back every day this week to make sure you don’t miss it, and keep a lookout for the scheming Medraut at the Cosmo Blazer Sneak Peeks on January 19th and 20th!
