LTGY Preview: Totem Bird
Duelists love negating stuff. There’s a reason why cards like Light and Darkness Dragon and Evolzar Laggia have remained popular since their release: monsters that negate stuff and stay on the field are really good! In Lord of the Tachyon Galaxy, you’ll have the chance to add a new negation monster to your Extra Deck arsenal: Totem Bird!
2 Level 3 WIND monsters
During either player’s turn, when a Spell/Trap Card is activated: You can detach 2 Xyz Materials from this card; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy it. This card loses 300 ATK while it has no Xyz Materials.
If the effect sounds familiar, that’s because Totem Bird works a lot like Evolzar Laggia. By detaching its Xyz Materials, you can negate any one Spell or Trap Card you like! Totem Bird will lose 300 ATK, but with smart play, that’ll be more than worth it to rid your opponent of their key Spell or Trap.
Totem Bird is Summoned by using any 2 Level 3 WIND monsters you see fit. You could always try using Rescue Rabbit along with Sonic Duck (!!!) or Elemental HERO Avian, but there are newer, cooler… more jet-powered things to try out, like the new Mecha Phantom Beasts!
Mecha Phantom Beasts are WIND Machine-Type monsters that Special Summon Level 3 Mecha Phantom Beast Tokens, and/or have effects to take advantage of those Tokens. They also modify their Levels based on the Tokens you control (We’ll be talking about the MPB’s in depth later this week). Some of their best monsters, like Mecha Phantom Beast Hamstrat, are Level 3, making them compatible with Totem Bird. The trick is getting a second monster to use as Xyz Material, since you can’t use Tokens as Xyz Material. That’s where Duck Fighter comes in!
If this card is in your hand or Graveyard: You can Tribute Tokens whose total Levels equal 3 or more; Special Summon this card. You can only use the effect of “Duck Fighter” once per turn.
Duck Fighter effectively trades in your Tokens for a new monster – and you can keep doing it turn after turn! If you can get just 1 Mecha Phantom Beast Token out of something like Mecha Phantom Beast Stealthray, Duck Fighter lets you Summon Totem Bird or any other Rank 3 Xyz Monster you want! Duck Fighter is also useful just to clear away some of your Tokens, allowing you to modify the Levels of your Mecha Phantom Beasts as you see fit. And finally, Duck Fighter packs 1300 ATK, making it a marked improvement over the 0 ATK Mecha Phantom Beast Tokens when you’re moving to the Battle Phase.
Totem Bird and Duck Fighter are just two of the great new cards you’ll have a chance to get real soon! Lord of the Tachyon Galaxy Sneak Peeks take off May 11th and 12th!
