Judgment of the Light Preview: Angel of Zera

Synchro Monsters are back in a big way in Judgment of the Light! Yesterday’s monster is the clear ruler of the cosmos, so today’s new Synchro Monster will be the clear ruler of the skies – Angel of Zera!


You won’t need anything special to play Angel of Zera – only a Tuner and 1 or more non-Tuners. As a generic Level 8 Synchro monster, this angel gives any Deck that has can use Synchros mastery over all banished cards! For each of your opponent’s banished cards, Angel of Zera gains 100 ATK. Add that on top of its already massive 2800 ATK, and Angel of Zera can take down just about anything.

But that’s not all! The best part is, if Angel of Zera ever gets banished, it will simply return to the field during the next Standby Phase! There are a ton of applications for this effect. First of all, it gives Angel of Zera protection against some of the common cards your opponent may use against it. Your angel laughs as he falls in a Bottomless Trap Hole. He cannot be contained by any Dimensional Prison. He goes out for coffee with D.D. Warrior Lady and then leaves her with the bill. (Editor’s Note: That’s a total jerk move, don’t do that.) And if your opponent has built their Deck around stopping you from having a Graveyard, Angel of Zera is ready to answer the call and prove that you didn’t need that Graveyard anyways.

And that’s all without considering the combos you can pull off with your own banishing cards! Angel of Zera doesn’t care where it gets banished from or who does the banishing, so all of the following is fair game too. You could…

-Banish Angel of Zera with Cyber Valley to draw two cards at the cost of only your Cyber Valley. Make sure to do this in Main Phase 2, after Angel of Zera has done some attacking!

-If Angel of Zera ends up in the Graveyard, use it to fuel the effects of cards like Master Hyperion and Freed the Brave Wanderer, or for the Summon of cards like Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning. Next turn, Angel of Zera will come back to fight for you again.

-Have Soul Release banish your own Angel of Zera and four of your opponent’s most important cards from their Graveyard. Angel of Zera will return with 400 extra ATK, and your opponent’s Graveyard will be left bare!

-Or, like the above combo on a much wider scale, you can use Macro Cosmos to banish all cards instead of letting them ever hit the Graveyard. Each card your opponent plays will power up Angel of Zera, while your angel will be returning to the field any time it should be destroyed!

Of course, you don’t need to build your Deck with any certain combos in mind. So long as you’re able to Synchro Summon a Level 8 monster, Angel of Zera is worth a spot in your Extra Deck. Its ATK is among the highest of any generic Level 8 Synchro without a drawback (I’m looking at you, Red Dragon Archfiend…), and it carries a unique form of built-in protection matched by no other Synchro Monster.
