Judgment of the Light Preview: Armades, Keeper of Boundaries

July 25th, 2013

Level 5 Synchro Monsters are really good.

So good, in fact, that nearly all of the Level 5 Synchros require some kind of specific material to be Summoned, or their effects only work with certain monsters. And that’s probably a good thing, but the downside is that most Duelists don’t get much of a choice when it comes to which Level 5 Synchro Monsters they play. Judgment of the Light is going to give everyone a new Level 5 Synchro choice, and it’s called Armades, Keeper of Boundaries!

Armades, Keeper of Boundaries completely changes the way you’ll think about a Level 5 Synchro Summon. While Armades is attacking or being attacked, your opponent is unable to activate any cards or effects until the battle has concluded!

There’s no way we can list everything Armades helps with, but we’ll try. First of all, Armades completely shuts down any cards that must be used in response to an attack. He can’t be hit by Mirror Force, blocked by Swift Scarecrow, or reflected by Magic Cylinder. Any cards that can only be used during the Damage Step, like Honest or Tragoedia, are also out of the question.

Armades wipes out searchers like Mermail Abysslinde or Reborn Tengu, and does a fine job of locking out any Flip Effect monsters too. Cards that are normally safe, like Ally of Justice Catastor and Neo-Spacian Grand Mole, get stomped by Armades.

Because of Armades’ effect, your opponent will often feel inclined to play their cards much sooner than they’d normally like to. For example, instead of waiting until the Damage Step, they’ll have to play Forbidden Lance on Armades during your Main Phase. That reveals their defenses to you, and gives you the option of Summoning another monster, attacking a weaker monster with Armades, or making any other safe play. You’re forcing them to play on your terms now, so even if Armades doesn’t end up attacking, you’re still in the driver’s seat.

One of the coolest parts of Armades’s effect is that it works both ways. If your opponent tries to take Armades out in the Battle Phase, it’ll have to be with pure muscle. Any ATK modifiers will have to be played before attacking, giving you the chance to bait them out, then strike back with a defensive Trap Card. Any trap you play will be guaranteed to work, since even cards like Solemn Judgment or Stardust Dragon cannot be used when attacking Armades!

Armades, Keeper of Boundaries is just one of the great new Synchro Monsters found in Judgment of the Light, and you can see it in action at a Sneak Peek on August 3rd or 4th!
