Navigating the Labyrinth of Nightmare

August 14th, 2013

In a universe where card effects that destroy monsters are scarce, a Continuous Trap Card that changes the battle position of all face-up monsters can become your opponent’s worst nightmare. In Battle Pack 2: War of the Giants sealed pack play, Labyrinth of Nightmare is that Trap Card. If you’re planning in playing in the Battle Pack 2 Sealed Pack YCS in Brussels at the end of this month, make sure you know the ins and outs of this card!

Spooooky

It’s no secret that the most common way to destroy monsters in Battle Pack 2: War of the Giants sealed play is through battle. And the best way to protect your own monsters is by setting them up with high ATK in Attack Position or high DEF in Defense Position to make them tough to topple. Labyrinth of Nightmare lets you do both.

Once per turn, during each player’s End Phase, Labyrinth of Nightmare changes the battle position of all face-up monsters that the turn player controls. You can use Labyrinth of Nightmare both defensively and offensively, by having it switch your monsters into the battle position in which they’re strongest during your End Phase, and having it switch your opponent’s monsters into the battle position in which they’re weakest during your opponent’s End Phase.

1. Use Labyrinth of Nightmare to switch your opponent’s monsters into their weakest battle position. Then, you can destroy them in battle.

Some of the strongest monsters in Battle Pack 2: War of the Giants have low DEF. Super Conductor Tyranno, for example, has 3300 ATK but only 1400 DEF, and Beast Machine King Barbaros Ur has 3800 ATK but only 1200 DEF. Once Labyrinth of Nightmare is face-up on your field, your opponent’s monsters will be forced to switch into Defense Position after attacking. Then, you’ll be able to easily Summon a monster that can wipe out your opponent’s monster in battle.

Even though Labyrinth of Nightmare will affect the battle positions of your monsters too, note that if Labyrinth of Nightmare is in your Deck, you’ll be able to decide when to activate it. You can activate it during your opponent’s turn after his or her Battle Phase, to catch your opponent off guard and change all of his or her monsters into their weakest Battle Position without giving your opponent a chance to protect them.

2. Use Labyrinth of Nightmare to switch your monsters into their strongest battle position during your End Phase.

When you’re using Labyrinth of Nightmare, you can anticipate its effect and prepare to navigate through the labyrinth. When you know that your monster will switch its Battle Position during your End Phase, you can mitigate the harm that Labyrinth of Nightmare causes to you by manually changing your monster’s battle position in your Main Phase. For example, if you have a monster with very high ATK and very low DEF, but know that you can’t afford to lose your monster in battle on your opponent’s turn, you can switch your monster into Defense Position during your Main Phase, instead of attacking. Then, it’ll switch back into Attack Position during your End Phase, and will stand strong against your opponent during his or her next turn.

Sometimes, you can even use Labyrinth of Nightmare’s effect to your advantage. Some low-Level monsters have high Attack Points and low Defense Points, and to balance out their strong ATK, they come with an often-crippling drawback: they switch into Defense Position after they attack. Axe Dragonute, Goblin Attack Force, and Elite Goblin Attack Force are all Level 4 monsters with over 2000 ATK; but each of them has low DEF and switches into Defense Position after attacking. Use the effect of Labyrinth of Nightmare to switch them back into Attack Position in your End Phase so that your monsters will be able to withstand your opponent’s attacks.

Labyrinth of Nightmare affects both players’ monsters, but that doesn’t mean it hurts or helps both players equally. By knowing when to activate Labyrinth of Nightmare and how to deal with its effect, a Duelist using Labyrinth of Nightmare in Battle Pack 2: War of the Giants sealed play can secure a huge advantage over his or her opponent.
