Building a Harpie Lady Deck
It might be called Joey’s World, but Legendary Collection 4 is also packed with cards from one of his greatest friends and rivals, Mai Valentine! Harpie fans will find almost everything they need to put together a killer Harpie Deck, including the all-new Harpie Lady Phoenix Formation, the ever-handy Harpie’s Pet Dragon, and the all-new Harpie Dancer!
So, how do you build your Harpie Deck?
Harpies are really good at making Xyz Summons, and they excel at picking off your opponent’s cards one by one. We’ll look at those two strategies separately; first, the Xyz Summons.
Harpie Channeler lets you discard a “Harpie” card to Special Summon a “Harpie” monster from your Deck in Defense Position. You can bring out Cyber Harpie Lady or Harpie Queen to make a Rank 4 Xyz, or Special Summon the Level 7 Harpie’s Pet Dragon. The Channeler has an effect that boosts it to Level 7 when you control a Dragon, so you can stack it with Harpie’s Pet Dragon to unleash Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack, Number 11: Big Eye, or Number 74: Master of Blades.
Hysteric Sign’s a Continuous Spell you can play two different ways. First, you can activate it to search Elegant Egotist from your Deck to your hand. Or, during the End Phase when Hysteric Sign’s sent from your hand or field to the Graveyard, you can search your Deck for up to three different “Harpie” cards. You can only use one effect per turn, so choose carefully. You can trigger the three-card search effect by destroying Sign with a card like Mystical Space Typhoon or your own Harpies’ Hunting Ground, or by discarding it.
Hunting Ground boosts all your Winged Beasts by 200 ATK and DEF, and it’s got a powerful effect that destroys a Spell or Trap Card whenever you Summon “Harpie Lady” or “Harpie Lady Sisters.” It’s really easy to use, since Harpie Channeler, Harpie Queen, and Cyber Harpie Lady all count as “Harpie Lady” for its trigger. You can use it to destroy your opponent’s backrow cards, or destroy your own Hysteric Sign to search three cards in your End Phase.
Finally, Hysteric Party lets you discard a card to Special Summon as many copies of “Harpie Lady” as possible from your Graveyard. It’s like a giant Call of the Haunted: you can bring back up to five Harpies in one move, but if Hysteric Party leaves the field it destroys everything it Summoned. That’s not a problem because you can use the Harpies as Xyz Materials. With Harpie Queen and Harpie Channeler loading up your Graveyard it gets really powerful, really fast.
If your Harpies survive, you can follow up next turn with Harpie Lady Phoenix Formation. It’s a Spell Card you’ll find in every Legendary Collection 4, and you can activate it when you control three or more “Harpie Lady” or “Harpie Lady Sisters” combined. It destroys as many opposing monsters as possible equal to the number of Harpies you control, then dishes out damage equal to the original ATK of the biggest monster you destroyed. You can’t Special Summon from your Main Deck or Extra Deck (though you can Summon from hand or Graveyard!) or conduct your Battle Phase the turn you activate Phoenix Formation, but with so much destructive power with damage on top, you won’t need to.
Finally, some of the best cards for your Harpie Deck aren’t just for Harpies. Summoner Monk lets you discard a Spell Card to Special Summon a Level 4 from your Deck, so you can pitch Hysteric Sign to trigger its search effect and score a Special Summon. Monk and any Level 4 Harpie will make a basic Rank 4, but if you Special Summon Harpie Channeler you can discard a “Harpie” card for another Special Summon, and make bigger Rank 4’s like Vylon Disigma. Monk’s awesome because it sets everything in motion; it searches cards with Hysteric Sign, it loads up Harpies for Hysteric Party, and it gets you a strong Rank 4.
Divine Wind of Mist Valley combos with Harpie Dancer to Special Summon more Harpies from your Deck. Harpie Dancer lets you target and return one of your WIND monsters to your hand then Normal Summon another WIND Monster – you can even target the Dancer itself. Divine Wind Special Summons a Level 4 or lower WIND from your Deck if a face-up WIND is returned to your hand, so you can Summon Dancer, bounce her back to your hand, then Normal Summon her again, and Special Summon Harpie Channeler. Special Summon another Harpie with Channeler to unleash Harpie’s Pet Phantasmal Dragon.
Icarus Attack is a huge part of your strategy. Tribute a Winged Beast to activate it, and you can target and destroy two cards on the field. It destroys monsters, it clears out your opponent’s Spell and Trap Card Zone, and it interrupts big Synchro and Xyz Summons. Eliminating two cards on each side of the field might seem like an even trade, but when you’re searching so many extra cards with Hysteric Sign, it’s easy to overwhelm your opponent.
Harpies win by searching as many cards as possible with Hysteric Sign, eliminating cards with Icarus Attack and Harpie’s Hunting Ground, and attacking constantly with Rank 4’s and Rank 7’s. Build your Harpie Deck with those priorities in mind, and you’ll have a strategy that even Mai Valentine would respect!
