What a Knight!

October 28th, 2013

It takes a lot of effort to Xyz Summon a Rank 8 monster, so it’s only fitting that they come with some pretty amazing effects. You can destroy cards en masse with Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of Heliopolis, pick off monsters and inflict damage with Number 15: Gimmick Puppet Giant Grinder, or just crush your opponent with a suite of nasty effects with Number 107: Galaxy-Eyes Tachyon Dragon! These monsters are all great, but they all share one downside: all of them can be taken out before they get a chance to do anything.

Of course, the same can be said of pretty much every monster in all of Dueling, so when a monster comes along that can’t simply be disposed of immediately, it’s time to take notice! Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand, come on down!

Once per turn, during either player’s turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 face-up monster on the field; this turn, its effects are negated, but it is unaffected by other card effects.

By using Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand’s Quick Effect, it can protect itself or any other monster from all other card effects for the turn! Use it on Felgrand itself (don’t worry, the resolution of Felgrand’s effect is what confers both the protection and the negation of the target’s effect, so Felgrand will be protected!) and your opponent won’t be able to take it out with their usual Trap Cards. It’s also safe from Dark Hole and Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos. It’s even safe from being swiped with Number 11: Big Eye, and can’t have its ATK reduced by Starliege Paladynamo! No matter what, Felgrand can’t be affected by other cards, leaving your opponent to have to deal with its 2800 ATK!

You can even combo this ability with your own destructive card effects! You can use Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand to keep it around even in the face of your own Torrential Tribute, Dark Hole, or Black Rose Dragon. You’ll clear the field, then you can follow up with a big direct attack!

When Felgrand isn’t saving itself from card effects, it’s can also offer its effect to any other card as well! You can use this to protect a different card you control, making your opponent waste an extra card to force your Felgrand’s effect out. That’s a risky strategy for them, because you can always just choose to allow their card to destroy your other monster, keeping Felgrand at the ready.

Additionally, Felgrand can also be used on your opponent’s monster! It’ll be unaffected by other cards for the turn, but its effect will be negated. That means Felgrand can even act as an impromptu Effect Veiler – a Veiler with a ton of ATK! You’ll have to give up Felgrand’s ability to protect itself for the turn, but that can easily be worth the risk to shut down the source of an opposing comeback!

Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand is an incredibly useful Xyz Monster, well worth playing in any Deck that can manage 2 Level 8 monsters! It can protect itself, protect your other monsters, and negate your opponent’s – all backed by that 2800 ATK! You can find Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand in Shadow Specters, with Sneak Peeks starting on November 2nd!
