The First Monarch

January 9th, 2014

The Monarchs are Attribute-attuned monsters that have been around for almost as long as Dueling itself! There is at least 1 Monarch for each of the six primary Attributes. But more and more Attributes are beginning to double up on Monarchs thanks to the new Mega Monarchs, and that’s causing a certain primeval force to stir from its long and lonely slumber. It is the progenitor of all Monarchs, and it can provide the power required to call forth the full power of any of your Monarchs – even the new Mega Monarchs – for just 1 Tribute! Meet The First Monarch!

Mnrch1
Special Summon this card as an Effect Monster (Fiend-Type/DARK/Level 6/ATK 1000/DEF 2400). (This card is also still a Trap Card.) If Summoned this way: You can discard 1 card, then declare 1 Attribute; this card becomes that Attribute, and can be treated as 2 Tributes for the Tribute Summon of a monster with the same Attribute as this card. While this card is treated as a monster, you cannot Special Summon monsters, except monsters with this card’s Attribute.

The First Monarch is, at minimum, a ready-made Special Summonable Tribute for any of your basic Monarchs. But it can also act as a way to Summon any Mega Monarch for 1 Tribute and claim it’s bonus effect! If you activate this card, it will be Special Summoned as an Effect Monster (with ATK and DEF that are the reversed stats of a regular Monarch). From there, you can choose whether or not to activate its effect by discarding a card as a cost. If you do discard a card, The First Monarch will become the Attribute of your choice, as well as counting as 2 Tributes for a monster of that Attribute.

Since it’s a Trap Card, you can use it to surprise your opponent in a number of ways. For one, it can always be a big surprise blocker when your opponent tries to attack directly. But one of the best ways to use it is during your opponent’s End Phase after they’ve committed all the cards they’re going to play that turn to the field. Depending on what they’ve done, you can decide whether or not to switch The First Monarch’s Attribute without worrying about them using any of the cards they just Set or giving them a chance to Set any more. That’s especially important if you’re thinking about using Granmarg the Mega Monarch or the brand new Mobius the Mega Monarch!

Mobius the Mega Monarch
, the new Mega Monarch in Legacy of the Valiant, can be Tribute Summoned with 2 Tributes, by Tributing a Tribute Summoned monster, or by Tributing The First Monarch if you’ve switched its Attribute to WATER. Once it’s Tribute Summoned, you can destroy up to 3 Spell and Trap Cards on the field, but if you Tributed a WATER monster to Summon it (like The First Monarch) the targeted cards are also frozen in place, unable to be activated in response to Mobius’ effect! Summoning either of the 2 Mega Monarchs requires you to use up 2 cards, but if their full effects are used then you’ll get 3 cards back out of the deal, plus you’ll have a 2800 ATK monster on the field! This is before adding Return of the Monarchs to the equation, which will give you another free card so that you can do it all again next turn.

And remember, because The First Monarch is a Trap, you don’t have to telegraph your moves ahead of time, leaving your opponent more likely to put themselves in a position where a Mega Monarch would really hurt!

The First Monarch provides a massive boost to all Monarch Decks, and gives you easy opportunities to Summon the new Mega Monarchs! The Monarchs are looking to reclaim their thrones, and if you want to harness that power then you’ll need The First Monarch and Mobius the Mega Monarch from Legacy of the Valiant!
