Bow Down to Downerd Magician!

January 30th, 2014

In addition to the new Gravekeeper’s, Bujins, and Sylvan monsters, Legacy of the Valiant contains a lot of new monsters that you can use in any Extra Deck! We’ve already talked about Evilswarm Exciton Knight and Number 101: Silent Honor ARK, and today we’re going to talk about Downerd Magician, an awesome new way for you to upgrade your low-Rank Xyz Monsters!

Downerd Magician
requires 2 Level 4 Spellcaster-type monsters to be Xyz Summoned normally, but you’re far more likely to use her special ability instead. Similar to Gaia Dragon, The Thunder Charger, you can Xyz Summon Downerd Magician using a Rank 3 or lower Xyz Monster you control as the Material! And just like Gaia Dragon, the Materials from your old monster transfer to Downerd Magician. Unlike Gaia Dragon, those Materials matter! A 2100 ATK monster might not seem that valuable, but she gets stronger, gaining 200 ATK for each Xyz Material she has attached, and she inflicts piercing battle damage to make use of all of that extra ATK power too! The only catch is that you have to detach 1 Xyz Material after any battle in which she attacked or was attacked. Using Gaia Dragon the Thunder Charger gives you a way to transform your Rank 5 and 6 Xyz Monsters into powerful attackers, and now Downerd Magician can do the same for your low-Rank Xyz Monsters.

Downerd Magician works best with weak Xyz Monsters that have really powerful effects. At Rank 3, 2 great options are Leviair the Sea Dragon and Ghostrick Alucard. Leviair allows you to Special Summon a banished monster, and Alucard will destroy any opponent’s Set card! After using these monster’s effects, you can attack, and then Xyz Summon Downerd Magician during Main Phase 2. It might seem contradictory to have to Xyz Summon Downerd Magician after attacking, but Downerd’s high ATK lets you get a powerful Xyz Monster effect without having to leave a vulnerable monster on the field. Both Leviair and Alucard have 1800 ATK, which doesn’t stand up very well against monsters like Bujintei Kagutsuchi and Mermail Abyssmegalo. Using their effects and then upgrading to Downerd Magician is a great tactic for strengthening your field and keeping it intact through your opponent’s turn!

If all you need is a massive monster without any of the side effects of Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction, you can always Summon a monster you have no intention of using, like Grenosaurus, sneak in an attack if you want, and then replace it with Downerd Magician. It’s an easy play to make with Tour Guide from the Underworld or Crane Crane, and it puts Downerd at 2700 ATK – even stronger than the Rank 7 Gaia Dragon the Thunder Charger!

And don’t forget, Downerd Magician inflicts piercing battle damage which may cause your opponent to change the way they play. Tokens become a no-go while Downerd Magician is on the field, and low DEF monsters lose their value as roadblocks, serving only to deplete Downerd Magician of Xyz Materials. If you can play another monster alongside Downerd Magician you can wreak havoc on your opponent’s Life Points by destroying their monsters and dealing damage no matter what position they’re in!

Downerd Magician gives Decks that focus on low-Rank Xyz Monsters a powerful monster that can help dish out some damage after setting up with another Xyz Monster. It has an automatic home in any Deck that uses low-ATK Rank 3 or lower monsters, and you can find it in Legacy of the Valiant!
