PRIO Preview: Charity Works

April 24th, 2014

The Sylvans may look like creatures of random chance, but their support cards make them way more precise than you might suspect.  While Sylvans once relied on Mount Sylvania to search, stack, and excavate the right monsters at the right time, Primal Origin brings a killer new draw card that can set up huge combos and help you see your best cards.  Check out Sylvan Charity!

CharityWorks
Remember Graceful Charity?  Everyone from Yugi and Kaiba, to Bandit Keith and Rebecca Hawkins played it on the original TV show, and it’s one of the most powerful Spell Cards ever printed in real life.  It’s been Forbidden for years, but now Sylvans get a new spin on it that’s even better for the theme!

Unless your plan involves losing your entire hand, Sylvan Charity’s for Sylvans only.  You won’t get any extra cards by playing it: to use Sylvan Charity you activate it, draw three, then place two cards back on top of your Deck, including at least 1 “Sylvan” card – that means you draw three cards, but you lose three as well.  Why’s that so good?

First up, just getting deeper into your deck is awesome.  Here are some key cards Sylvans want to see as early and often as possible:

StuffToGrab
Lonefire Blossom
lets a Sylvan Duelist Special Summon virtually anything from the deck, while Miracle Fertilizer can recycle Lonefire or sit on the field to keep reviving heavy-hitters.  The earlier you draw those cards, the better your chance at winning.  Mount Sylvania’s still a big help too, letting you set up excavations so you can hit your opponent with big effects on their own turn.  Sylvan Komushroomo destroys spells and traps, while Sylvan Marshalleaf pops pesky monsters.

While Graceful Charity discarded cards from your hand, Sylvan Charity’s different: it stacks your deck with two cards instead.  Monsters like Sylvan Flowerknight, Sylvan Marshalleaf and Sylvan Peaskeeper can all trigger the excavated effects of your Sylvan monsters moments after you put them on top, so the trick is to use Sylvan Charity to get those monsters to your hand, then place the Sylvans with the effects you want to play back on top of your Deck.  That way you can immediately Normal Summon, excavate, and activate some killer abilities.

Note that if you draw high-Level Sylvans like Sylvan Hermitree or the new Sylvan Sagequoia, Sylvan Charity helps you trade them for cards that are easier to play, too.  Sylvan Charity sets up combos and gets you to the cards you need, but it also helps you make the most of the cards you have… even if they were sub-par draws and you’d rather have them back in your Deck.

And that’s not all!  Sylvan Charity has synergy with another big new card from Primal Origin

RUMSpectrum

Rank-Up-Magic – The Seventh One can unleash massive “Number C” Xyz Monsters straight from your Extra Deck.  Monsters like Number C101: Silent Honor DARK and the new Number C107: Neo Galaxy-Eyes Tachyon Dragon often win the game when they hit the field, and The Seventh One lets you Summon them for no cost whatsoever.  Awesome.

The catch?  You have to draw The Seventh One as your normal draw in your Draw Phase, otherwise you can’t activate it.  If you start with it in your opening hand, or draw it with something like Upstart Goblin or Reckless Greed, you can’t play it.  The good news?  Since Sylvan Charity lets you put cards from your hand back on top of your Deck, you can do whatever you want to get to Rank-Up-Magic – The Seventh One, and then load it up with Charity!  And since Charity lets you decide the order of the two cards you place on top of your Deck, you can still put a Sylvan on top and excavate it for its effect.  Suddenly those Sylvans that give you the option of excavating multiple cards from the top of your Deck, but let you excavate as few as one, make a lot more sense.

Sylvan Charity’s a simple card, but there’s a lot going on here!  It’s even reusable with Sylvan Sagequoia, and it works nicely with the new World Premiere card Sylvan Princessprout; we’ll discuss both a bit later on here on the Strategy Site.  Consistency, combos, and come-from-behind wins?  Sylvan Charity does it all, and you can get your hands on it at the Primal Origin launches on May 16th! You can also check out a Primal Origin Sneak Peek the weekend of May 10th!
