Mask Change – The Second One

January 28th, 2015

The thing about masked heroes is that as long as they’re wearing the mask, you have no idea who they really are. Same goes for Masked HEROes. With Mask Change, you can at least make a guess at the secret identity of these new HEROes, but with the new Mask Change II it could be almost any monster behind the mask!

Discard 1 card, then target 1 face-up monster you control that has a Level; send it to the Graveyard, also, after that, if it left the field by this effect, Special Summon from your Extra Deck, 1 “Masked HERO” monster with the same Attribute, but a higher Level than, the Attribute/Level the monster had when it was on the field (its original Attribute/Level, if face-down. This Special Summon is treated as a Special Summon with “Mask Change”). You can only activate 1 “Mask Change II” per turn.

The most interesting part of that text is what isn’t in the text. It’s “target 1 face-up monster you control” not “target 1 face-up “HERO” monster you control”. That means that Mask Change II is open to any Deck, not just HERO Decks, breathing new life into older strategies and adding unexpected twists and turns in many of today’s most popular strategies!

Mermails got back 2 copies of Mermail Abyssgunde on Januray 1st, and by the time the month is through they’ll have access to Masked HERO Vapor and Masked HERO Acid as well! Acid is Level 8 and wipes out all of your opponent’s Spells and Traps. No Mermail exceeds Level 7, so Mask Change II is compatible with all of your Main Deck “Mermail” monsters as a way to dodge removal or negation effects and clear away your opponent’s Spell/Trap Cards and Pendulum Cards as well. You can even take advantage of the discard cost of Mask Change II by discarding Mermail Abyssgunde to the Graveyard and triggering its revival effect!

MaskOfAbyss
Burning Abyss Decks are packed with Level 3 DARK monsters, any of which can be transformed into Masked HERO Dark Law by Mask Change II! This is an especially powerful interaction in the Burning Abyss strategy because you’ll likely trigger 2 different Burning Abyss effects – one from the on-field monster and one that you discard – all while putting a 2400 ATK monster on the field that locks out your opponent’s Graveyard and discourages your opponent from playing card drawing and searching effects.

The Sylvans have monsters of every Attribute available to them and relish in loading up the Graveyard with cards to revive later. Sylvan Marshalleaf can be swapped out for Masked HERO Acid to clear out your opponent’s Spell and Trap Cards, and then that same Masked HERO Acid can later be paired with Sylvan Hermitree for a Rank 8 Xyz Summon. Sylvan Sagequoia is Level 7, but Masked HERO Divine Wind is Level 8, so you can turn a pair of monsters with mismatched Levels – Sagequoia and Hermitree – into a pair of Level 8 monsters! Divine Wind and Hermitree together have the potential to let you draw 2 extra cards per turn with their effects while restricting your opponent’s ability to battle. But if you have further combos to play out, you can just combine them for a Rank 8 Xyz Summon!

Those are just a few of the cool things that Mask Change II can do for you, even if you don’t plan on building a HERO Deck. Come back soon for even more ideas on how you can make any Deck HEROic! The HERO Strike Structure Deck launches on Friday.
