World Superstars – Front Row Seat
The Star Seraphs debuted nearly two years ago in Judgment of the Light. They were a new group of LIGHT Fairy-Types from Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL that were really good at Special Summoning each other to make Rank 4 Xyz Summons. The Star Seraphs were fast, but they didn’t have many ways to search, draw, or recycle cards: that meant one or two Xyz Summons could run you out of cards. These celestial beings would shine bright for a turn or two, but they burned out too quickly to last in a long Duel.
Now World Superstars changes all that, introducing three new “Star Seraph” monsters that solve the theme’s biggest challenges.
All three of these new Star Seraphs have unique effects that help keep your hand healthy as you Xyz Summon.
–Star Seraph Scepter’s the simplest of the bunch: whenever it’s Normal Summoned or Special Summoned, you can add another Star Seraph from your deck to your hand.
-When you Normal Summon or Special Summon a “Star Seraph” monster, you can activate the effect of Star Seraph Sovereignty to Special Summon it from your hand. If you Summon it successfully you draw a free card, and if the card you draw is a Star Seraph you can Special Summon that as well.
-When Star Seraph Scale is Special Summoned, you can Special Summon another Star Seraph from your hand, then place a LIGHT monster from your Graveyard on top of your Deck.
Star Seraph Scepter searches out combo pieces for free; Star Seraph Sovereignty grabs you a free draw and helps you gather Rank 4 Xyz Materials; and Star Seraph Scale lends more Special Summoning power, and it can let you choose the card you draw with Sovereignty. They’re all awesome effects that help you pump out big Xyz Summons, but each Star Seraph has another effect that goes further to shape your plays.
-Any three or more material Xyz Monster you Summon with Star Seraph Scepter gets an effect: when your Xyz Summon is successful, you can target another card on the field and destroy it. If you destroy the target, you then draw a card.
–Star Seraph Scale’s similar, giving any Xyz Monster with three or more Materials another effect when you use Scale as a Material: once per turn, while that monster has Xyz Material, you draw a card if a monster’s Special Summoned from either Duelist’s hand. Lots of Decks Special Summon that way, but you can make your own Special Summons with stuff like Scale or Sovereignty and get a free draw just for being aggressive.
-Finally, Star Seraph Sovereignty’s effect is actually a restriction: you can only use it as an Xyz Material if the monster you’re Summoning takes three or more Xyz Materials.
These effects place the Star Seraph strategy in a defined context: they’re really great at making three-Material Xyz. In fact, you can make a three-Material Xyz Summon with nothing but Star Seraph Scepter and Star Seraph Sovereignty.
This combo’s hugely powerful: it’s a fundamental move for any dedicated Star Seraph Deck, but it’s so good that you can splash Star Seraph Scepter and Star Seraph Sovereignty into Decks like Satellarknights or Shaddolls and amp up an entirely different strategy. Here’s how it works.
-First, Normal Summon Star Seraph Scepter. Because you Summoned Scepter, you can trigger its search effect and activate Sovereignty’s Special Summon ability.
-Because both effects triggered at the same time, you decide what order they go on the Chain. Make Sovereignty’s effect Chain Link 1, and Scepter’s search Chain Link 2.
-When the Chain resolves, search another copy of Sovereignty from your Deck with Scepter. Then Special Summon your first copy of Sovereignty and draw a card for its effect.
-Since the Special Summon of a “Star Seraph” monster happened during the last Chain, you can now activate the Special Summon effect of the Sovereignty you searched with Scepter on a new Chain.
-Special Summon the second Sovereignty to draw a card.
This play starts with just two monsters from your hand but gets you three free cards – one search and two draws. If you overlay all three monsters for a Rank 4 Xyz Monster that Summon becomes better than free because Scepter will give your monster the power to destroy another card while you draw your third extra card of the turn. A two card combo that turns into a search, 3 draws, and one card taken off your opponent’s field? That’s nuts, and there are lots of great Rank 4’s you can Summon.
You already saw Number 102: Star Seraph Sentry above, but there are plenty of off-theme Rank 4’s that are awesome too.
–Stellarknight Delteros has a powerful destruction effect, detaching an Xyz Material to destroy any one card on the field. Even better, it packs an ability that keeps your opponent from responding whenever you Normal or Special Summon. That’s great with Scepter’s effect, because your opponent won’t be able to respond to Delteros’ borrowed “destroy then draw” ability. It practically guarantees you two free cards and can often deliver more.
-When your opponent activates a monster effect in the Battle Phase, you can detach an Xyz Material from Number 104: Masquerade to negate that activation, then burn your opponent for 800 LP. That’s great against decks like Shaddolls, Burning Abyss, and any of the many LIGHT-based Decks that run Honest.
-Finally, Evilswarm Ouroboros packs three different abilities: it can bounce a card to your opponent’s hand; send a random card from their hand to the Graveyard; or banish a card from your opponent’s Graveyard.
These cards are all really powerful in their native strategies, but they’re even better here because you can use your Scepter and Sovereignty combo to Summon them for free. Combined with the effects your Star Seraphs add, all of these cards can win Duels and end Matches. And don’t forget – most of your Star Seraphs work for regular 2-Material Xyz Summons too. Since they’re LIGHT Fairy-Types you can Summon specialized Rank 4’s like Fairy Cheery Girl, Constellar Omega, and Starliege Paladynamo – monsters other Decks can’t play.
Cards like Photon Lead and Instant Fusion help you make your Xyz Summons in a pinch, while Soul Charge and Call of the Haunted trigger your most important effects and load you up for more Xyz Summons. The Star Seraph strategy’s a deadly force that’s makes some of the game’s biggest Rank 4’s without breaking a sweat.
