The Return of the Dragon Lords is Nigh!

July 5th, 2016

Earlier this year the Emperor of Darkness Structure Deck brought one of the most popular monster themes of all time back into serious tournament contention. As one of the earliest truly distinct strategies, Monarchs were a no-brainer to bring back given their enduring popularity over the years. As a follow-up, we’re going even further back, all the way back to one of the original 3 Dueling strategies: sneaking high-Level Dragons into play!

The Emperor of Darkness Structure Deck was all about Tribute Summoning big monsters, but the Rise of the True Dragons Structure Deck is the exact opposite. If you’re Tribute Summoning, something has gone horribly wrong because Rise of the True Dragons is all about getting Dragons out of your Deck and into the Graveyard where you can easily revive them. The key card that makes this strategy go is Return of the Dragon Lords, a Normal Spell that Special Summons a Level 7 or 8 Dragon from your Graveyard and can then be banished from your Graveyard to prevent your Dragon(s) from being destroyed.

Return of the Dragon Lords
is a Normal Spell and it’s not bound by any “once per turn” limitations on either of its effects, so it’s the perfect way to bring these Dragon strategies into the present day. Clash of Rebellions introduced a new strategy based on notable Level 7 Dragon-Type monster Red-Eyes B. Dragon, High-Speed Riders and Dimension of Chaos introduced new forms of Red Dragon Archfiend, and Shining Victories upped the ante with a new strategy revolving around Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Return of the Dragon Lords fits perfectly into all of those Decks, drastically improving their power, speed, and reliability!

Blue-Eyes Decks in particular benefit from this thanks to Dragon Spirit of White’s special ability. When it’s Normal or Special Summoned, you can banish 1 of your opponent’s Spell/Trap Cards, turning Return of the Dragon Lords into a Spell/Trap removal card in addition to something that advances your strategy by putting a Level 8 “Blue-Eyes” monster on the field for Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon.

Red Dragon Archfiend Decks get a huge boost as well thanks to Scarlight Red Dragon Archfiend’s ability to wipe out entire fields worth of Special Summoned monsters and inflict damage while doing so. With Return of the Dragon Lords, you don’t have to have any reservations about upgrading into Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Abyss because you can bring Scarlight or whichever Level 8 DARK Dragon-Type Synchro Monster you used right back to go alongside it.

You’ll be able to try out Return of the Dragon Lords yourself this Friday when the Rise of the True Dragons Structure Deck hits shelves! Who knows what amazing Decks you’ll be able to create with it?
