Monster Science!
Gemini monsters are one of the most unique types of monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh! Not only do they operate entirely differently to other monsters in the game, but they’ve also lacked a coherent theme to call their own. In the past, we’ve seen Decks using Elemental HERO Neos Alius and sometimes Crusader of Endymion alongside Gemini Spark to constantly put pressure on the field while easily destroying your opponent’s cards. Now, Invasion: Vengeance introduces the Chemicritters, a dedicated group of tiny Gemini monsters that combine to create great chemical behemoths!
First, a refresher on how Gemini monsters work. Gemini monsters are Effect Monsters that are treated as Normal Monsters while they’re on the field or in the Graveyard. However, if they’re on the field and you have a Normal Summon available, you can spend that Normal Summon change a Gemini monster from Normal Monster to Effect Monster! This counts as a Summon happening, but you don’t have to Tribute if you’re switching on the effect of a high-Level Gemini monster. Since you need to use your Normal Summon to unlock their effects, it can be hard to use them right away. Thanks to cards like Supervise and Catalyst Field, however, you have plenty of ways to get your Geminis on the field and give them their effects!
You’ve probably seen these cards at the Sneak Peek, but in that limited environment you likely didn’t get a chance to see what they can do! Chemicritter Carbo Crab allows you to send 1 Gemini monster from your Deck to the Graveyard to add 1 Gemini monster from your Deck to your hand. Carbo Crab gets your Geminis exactly where you want them, setting up both short-term and long-term plans while getting 2 cards out of your Deck each time you use its effect! It’s also a Level 2 Aqua-Type monster, so a pair of them is Toadally Awesome.
Chemicritter Hydron Hawk lets you Special Summon a Gemini monster from your Graveyard in Defense Position by discarding 1 card, setting up Xyz Summons or pulling one of the high-Level Poly-Chemicritters out of the Graveyard. Chemicritter Oxy Ox allows you to Special Summon a Gemini Monster from your hand, and change your monsters’ Levels to match the monster you Summoned. Oxy Ox is your real Xyz Summon setup, giving you a sure-fire way to easily get your big Geminis in play and preparing you for Xyz Summons. The two giant Geminis you can Summon are the Poly-Chemicritters, two monsters that supercharge your Gemini Monsters in awesome ways!
Poly-Chemicritter Dioxogre has 2800 ATK and 200 DEF, and its Gemini effect prevents the Normal Summons of Gemini monsters from being negated. This works both to protect a Normal Summon of a Gemini monster, and from using your Normal Summon to power up a Gemini monster already on your field. On top of that, Dioxogre can banish a Gemini from your Graveyard to destroy any one of your opponent’s cards! Since it’s so easy to Summon thanks to Chemicritter Hydron Hawk and Chemicritter Oxy Ox, you’ve always got an easy way to take care of almost any kind of card. If it can’t destroy it with its effect, its 2800 ATK will pummel through most monsters out there!
Poly-Chemicritter Hydragon has mirrored stats of Dioxogre, boasting a beefy 2800 DEF. In addition, Hydragon’s effect will bestow 500 ATK and DEF onto any Normal Summoned Gemini Monster! Once again, this will trigger both on its Summon and also when unlocking its Gemini powers, so one monster can potentially get a 1000 ATK and DEF boost! In addition, Hydragon allows you to protect your Geminis from destruction by card effects, by destroying another card you control instead! The only way your opponent is getting through Hydragon via destruction is by battle, and its 2800 DEF won’t make it easy! There’s also a Trap Card called Burnout, that trades one on-field Chemicritter for 2 different ones from your Deck, which can quickly put both Poly-Chremicritters on the field at the same time. You can even banish Burnout when your opponent attacks you directly to Special Summon a banished Gemini monster as an Effect Monster!
The final, most powerful Chemicritter is a volatile combination of each of the previous monsters, bringing their essence together to form one ultimate, but unstable powerhouse! Vola-Chemicritter Methydraco has 3000 ATK and DEF, and you’ll need 2 Level 8 Gemini monsters to Xyz Summon it. When you Xyz Summon Methydraco, it’ll immediately bring out a Gemini monster from your Graveyard to fight alongside it. Bringing out Poly-Chemicritter Dioxogre gives you 5800 ATK in one move!
Methydraco protects your Gemini monsters from being attacked or targeted by card effects, making it very tricky for your opponent to remove them with a 3000 ATK wall in the way! Methydraco also allows you to detach a Xyz Material any time a Gemini monster is Normal Summoned, to force your opponent to send one card from their hand or field to the Graveyard. They get to make the decision, but they’re still down a card, and the effect doesn’t target, destroy, or even affect the card they choose, which can render the upsides of cards like Kozmotown and Guiding Ariadne ineffective.
The Chemicritters are a grand revival of Gemini Monsters and are powerful because they even work well with any old Gemini cards you might have. If you’re interested in trying out this cool new Deck, you’ll get your shot starting tomorrow, November 4th, when Invasion: Vengeance is released into the wild!
